Nokia 9 PureView review

05 April 2019
The Once and Future King of mobile photography - the PureView camera - is back! The Nokia's champion has lived through the twilights of Symbian and Windows Phone, to be once again reborn in the peak of Android era. HMD's Nokia 9 is the bearer of the next-gen PureView snapper, and it's not one, but whole six of them!

Colors and detail in daylight stills is actually most close to xz2c, which is still the best in capturing hdr detail. Pretty awesome for the killed compact line. May xperia1 get better... Cannot wait, even with nokia9 looking better than the others, it's worse than 1 in colors, just when it's coming...

ZolaIII, 06 Apr 2019Response rate (Hz) is more tied to the matrix than emitting... moreOkay, so let's settle the fact that 120Hz on OLED panels is possible, but then why aren't they still available today?
I mean, we've had 120Hz and 144Hz IPS monitors for years, heck even 240Hz for quite some years already, but is there anybody who invested their time in creating a good 120Hz OLED panel?
Is 90Hz (Asus ROG Phone) already the best that they could achieve with this type of display technology?
I do get that it's not very easy to develop such a thing, but I imagined that anytime by now, a prototype of it must've been available already, assuming that the development of such thing started some 5 years ago.
If OLEDs, by nature, are better at handling high-speed motions than TFT/IPS LCDs, then shouldn't it mean that manufacturers will invest more on them than the latter?

I'm not quite sure why HMD even allowed this phone to carry the PureView brand name. The way it processes an image is far from being "pure", nor involves any sort of downsampling algorithms which older Nokia phones with the 40MP sensors use.. And for some reason digital zoom quality is far worse than what you can get from P30 Pro or Pixel 3 which only uses 1 camera at a time instead of 5, and finally that horrible low light performance despite having 3 monochrome sensors just to enhance the light sensitivity. Probably HMD should've asked Google or Huawei to code the software processing part instead of trying to do everything on their own. smh

Shanti Dope, 06 Apr 2019iPhones have 120Hz RESPONSE rate, not REFRESH rate..... If... moreResponse rate (Hz) is more tied to the matrix than emitting diodes them self. So you have only TFT matrix "gaming" panels in mid range tire, neither IPS nor APV can reach that high response rates. Much criticised pen tile matrix Samsung uses does have less actual emitters meaning it should also be faster than regular RGB one. OLEDS are generally 5 to 10x more priced than IPS so you won't see them in mid tier monitors anytime soon disregard less of they refresh rate.

Anonymous, 06 Apr 2019Sorry to disappoint you friend, but: 1) the 48 MP senso... more1) Lumias with original pure view sensor ware not so fat while that sensor is still superior to 48 MP one's today from Sony and Samsung. If you want fat good one try with 35 mm 100 MP Sony IMX555CQR which is available for OEM's. Google did much more with single same sensor as on this Nokia (primary one) then they did with five of them.
                4) Samsung does have 120 Hz Amoled panels and it will make you one by your wishes as long as you pay them.
                6) It does exist but we didn't see it you on phone.
                7) without stacked SDDR on sensor it ain't possible, however stacked sensors are entirely something else.
                9) depends on brand, there are brands that already charge that much & without all of those things and other one's that are 2x cheaper.

If OLEDs are capable of performing 120Hz refresh rates, why aren't they used for mid range gaming PC monitors?

So, ok, this device needs updates. But you guys, seem to forget this. As far as i know, you just said, the pictures are great if you know how to raw. Ever tought about the massive detail that this device puts in a raw file that others just don't match? You wattered down the potential with randome words. One is to have a raw file and other is to have a crazy detailed raw file.... As of point and shot? Well, they can adjust that in quite quick manner. The whole review wattered down this device in each and every aspect ringing again at the biased door. Their are updates on the way, and those i am waiting for.

Thanks, GSMArena for including the RAW capture too in the review. And I am very happy to see the sunlight contrast ratio chart back in the display section.

Now time for some head-on camera shootouts!

I don't know what others think, but this is my next phone. I don't take many photos during a day or even a week, but when I do I want to take full control and use maximum light information collected by cameras and decide final outcome. This process was always pleasure for me.
And by the way, why GSMA doesn't conduct low light photography on a tripod? Using longer shutter speeds? This is a proper way of shooting at night unless you've got 1000$+ lens attached on your camera.
Anyway I hope future software update solves many issues observed now.

                            Keep this in mind:
                            - There is NO BULGE at all in this device which is the main focus with this device. Nokia started this with Nokia 8 and later enhanced with this device.
                            - This phone is really targeted for those who really enjoy playing around with photos and editing tools.

I believe the successor for this device would do much better in Auto.

The camera looks the most overprocessed pictures i've ever seen. Not to my liking at all.

                                      To pureview, or not to pureview; that is the question; {your answer here}

You know, I read the audio quality part first, and it seemed to me like the old Nokia has returned.
I still own Nokia 808. Fantastic media setup overall.

Of course, we're talking about Android, so yes, the data leaks to America no matter what we do... So, that portion is still not the same as older Nokia.
But otherwise, I think HMD is doing good overall.

Its too late to expect a Symbian return, but yes, I hope we get a paid Android system that's far lesser intrusive.
