Sony Xperia 1 review

08 June 2019
Sony has completely revamped its Xperia series yet again, and this year the common denominator is the cinematic screen. Every new Xperia smartphone gets a 21:9 panel for the most immersive viewing experience, but the Xperia 1 is special. It is the Xperia Premium reborn, with a large 6.5" OLED 4K HDR display and today we'll get to know it better.

Lots of none sense comments comming from people who don't even have this phone...

I have upgraded my s10+ to Xperia 1 and gets about 1 hour even more SoT ...

Why you making comments when you don't have experience with the device.. i am absolutely ore than haply with the battery performance...

Of course if it was like 4000mah it would be even better , but optimization is spot on and have no complaints .. specially compare to s10+ Exinose ...

Also very happy with the camera .. but there are some glitch here and the in the software which i am hoping to be sorted through next software update ...

No other phone camera could capture this. https://flic.kr/p/2gbmMeK

The ability to capture moving objects on this thing is truly impressive.

I am rocking a Sony Xperia L1 it's as good as the day it was unwrapped and faultless nothing wrong with its performance.

I may upgrade to this one as the L1 is getting on but seems silly to change it

The rest of screen ratio video format will not provide 4k experience (but still higher res than other competition). But what the heck? Its a 6.5" screen device lol. - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultrawide_formats

Safe to say, it is a 4k format, on a 21:9 screen ratio.

For the people saying that Sony's optimized software is more important than battery size:
I have owned multiple Sony phones in the past and it has always been the same story.
After buying the phone, the battery life was great. Then after few Android updates, it went terrible.
Z3 Compact SoT was about 7 hours when new, then 2 years later, they messed up the updates and it went down to 4-5h SoT. Then they stopped updating it.
I finally decided to buy an outdoor phone with 1080x1920 screen and 4400 mAh and will never look back. It has no gimmicks and it's way better than all Sonys and their "optimized" software.
And yes, 4k on a phone is a gimmick, but I would understand this kind of gimmick if it was actually
3300 mAh for 4k is never enough, trust me...

Sony... The Notorious One. Love it or hate it... The truth is simple. Sony phones are still great quality and capable but not even 10% popular of that old popularity.
It's a shame, but they brought it upon themselves.

pt020, 09 Jun 2019Size of a battery is nonsense... good software will do wond... moreI have to disagree with you size is non sense for the battery, but do agree that software together with the processor can do wonder, previous Xperia owner here very bad experience with 4k display and terrible battery life with Z5P honestly saying it's a joke and this time the result prove again from the review, 8 hours with wifi web browsing really want to say good luck with the phone.

After my Xperia Z5P exprience I conclude that anything more than 1080p is pointless for such small screen, the quality different normally noticeable for different type of the screen OLED vs LCD for example but not resolution, the screen use the most battery for any phone I hope that the manufacturer can concentrate their research on battery saving screen instead of resolution if have OLED screen that use 30% less battery that is a great break through compare to resolution I will definitely interest in that.

And second the important of battery life for the phone, what is the point if you hold a phone constantly with low battery? which you can't use it for the time you need it!! If you travel a lot this is very annoying when you need Google map your phone tell you the battery is low and the next thing is you need to do is you need to constantly carry a power bank with you which is super inconvenience, this is the reason why after Z5P I will never consider a flagship phone with bad battery, endurance lower than 100h sorry not in my list.

sohail shafayat, 09 Jun 2019for any ratio, 2160p is for 4K. to be proper 4K on a 21:9 s... moreYou are right and wrong at the same time. People are referring to panels as 720p and 1080p, 4K as more of a consumer slang, proper is High Definition, Full High Definition and Ultra High Definition which are only relevant to 16:9 aspect ratio (actually even that's not true cause each resolution makes adjustment to native 16:9). For example no one says 1200p for 1920 x 1200 16:10 panels, everyone says WUXGA cause it's not a mainstream consumer product like 16:9 TVs are. 4K went from film scan spec to marketing term and even film scans could varie in few tens of pixels in both width and height.

Here is the kicker for Xperia 1 and what Sony did. Ultrawide 4K resolution is 3840×1600 and it's official moniker is UW4K but as you can notice Xperia 1 extends beyond that and question is why? Answer is Sony wanted to keep native 21:9 ratio (2.33:1
to be exact and got really close with 2.34:1) in it's pure form cause 3840×1600 is considered 21:9 but technically its 240:1 which is on the very tipping side of the 21:9 spectrum. 21:9 or 7:3 is 2.33:1 but it has tolerance all the way to 240:1.

Hope this makes any kind of sense. Sony prioritized aspect ratio over standard defined resolution and 21:9(7:3) defined 4K resolution is 3840×1600 with it's official name Ultrawide 4K or UW4K.
