Sony Xperia 1 review

08 June 2019
Sony has completely revamped its Xperia series yet again, and this year the common denominator is the cinematic screen. Every new Xperia smartphone gets a 21:9 panel for the most immersive viewing experience, but the Xperia 1 is special. It is the Xperia Premium reborn, with a large 6.5" OLED 4K HDR display and today we'll get to know it better.

And I looking around youtube and wondering how Xperia one audio and dolby atmos against da rest of da rival big boys phone. And lastly for all da bitch who complain sony phone dont have this feature or that feature. Please leave da good product for the one who can afford it.

sohail shafayat, 09 Jun 2019What if I keep complaining? I'm not complaining to You, You... moreIt seems you also clueless about 4K a true "4K" refers to any resolution with a horizontal pixel count of approximately 4,000 but Several different 4K resolutions have been standardized by various organizations that is why we have many standards even tough some of the "4K" standard doesn't have 4000 horizontal pixel count.

Some media outlets also have begun using the term "UW4K" (Ultra-wide 4K) for 3840 × 1600.
So there is nothing wrong if Sony calls Xperia 1 has a 4K screen because not only there are many standards used by different organizations but olso Xperia 1 uses 21:9 aspect ratio.

Doum, 09 Jun 20192160 p it's for 16:9 for any ratio, 2160p is for 4K. to be proper 4K on a 21:9 screen, it should be 2160:5040. you may see other FHD+ screens, the base 1080p is fixed, whatever the length is, 2160, 2220, 2340, etc. people say 720p, 1080p, 1440p or 2160p to define resolution, no one says the value of the length. so 1644p is not 4K. and there would have been nothing wrong to come up with a 4000mAh battery.

Anonymous, 09 Jun 2019Look at the shots taken in good lighting. Looks less sharp ... moreThis is typical for Sony, it's just how they handle their processing. For Pixel peeping it's not going to be great but professionals will prefer this as they edit photos on Adobe or similar tools later anyway.

That said I think GSMA's particular test unit has some lens defect, the main camera has some sort of lens quality issue, way too much lens blur outside of the center zone.

Couldn't catch, does it stack shots? No auto hdr, some noise present, not pixel/iphone like detail...
Wonder when they will start, but probably with their new hi res sensor for sure. Still with some stacking 48mp in ultra clarity mode, stacking in 12mp should be a must. So how is it with Sony...?

This review is suspect. Having a 855 chip is pro on a flagship these days.... LOL! That's the standard.

This could be a perfect smartphone, if the battery was at least 4500 mAh and if it had a headphone jack. The phone would be slightly thicker, but with no camera bump. This is supposed to be a media beast, but the battery won't even last an average traveling day with few hours in train/plane etc. 1 movie + few hours of music and you are done.

Shanti Dope, 09 Jun 2019"So you decided to look over the strong sharpening halo and... moreOk I completely take back the "contrast boost" part of my comment as my wordings seems to caused a bit of confusion, Xperia 1 indeed captures better dynamic range than Pixel 3(which is not known for good dynamic range by today's standard), and comfortably matches iPhone XS and P30 in this regard.

"enhance instead of increase rather, but the point still remains"
The sharpening does a decent job to make the image more pleasing in low light, but definitely it does more harm than good during the day. Nokia 9 has the same problem but that one is even worse than Xperia 1, it eliminates every single fine detail in low contrast area into oblivion and turn them into a mush. Given its new RAW noise reduction, there shouldn't be any reason to use sharpening this strong, unless they are using soft lens and trying to hide that fact. It's especially weird considering that alpha team actually helped the Sony mobile division for the development of Xperia's brand new multi camera setup.

Best low lights shots ever seen on a smartphone? Yep. Shame the battery life isn't that great and the aspect 21:9 ratio is a pointless exercise in "we do it because we can" not because they should. This phone isn't available in most parts of the world even if one wanted to buy it. Wonder why Sony even tries to market a good product at this rate. That Japanese stubbornness to change strategy in the face of market realities is their undoing.

It seems Sony has internal standard to decide the size of the battery which determined not by the capacity of the battery but usage time of each device. Recent Xperia devices' battery testing done by GSMA show kind of pattern, except for compact models. XZ2 & XZ3 also deviates but sony's calculation may match with the other phones, who knows?
