LG V60 ThinQ 5G review

19 April 2020
While we were all expecting a successor to the G8, LG instead announced a successor to the V50. The LG V60 ThinQ 5G is the latest fully featured flagship smartphone from Samsung’s Korean rival. LG doesn’t go quite as hard with the spec sheet as others like Samsung and Oppo, but it also doesn’t go as hard with the price point.

Wow, the industry needs a good boot up the pants, the data rates on the videos are pathetic

What happened to 8k at 30/25/24 fps, standards frame rates, not 26fps.

You need to use videos with random movement, at least a 360 degree quick pan with complex detail, like bushes, to show how these low bit rate video modes easily break down. To put the industry of the spot, to advocate for better camera performance. A static shot does not tax the camera much, even a 4mb/s could handle that.

Have a try of vizzywig and filmic pro advanced editions, to see if their advanced modes can get a lot more datarate?

Fearghast, 19 Apr 2020If you did like Creative Labs' X-Fi DAC/Amp compared to LG ... moreAudioQuest DragonFly's are uter garbage! LG's implementation of ESS Sabre32 90xxK2M DAC's is a by far best one up to date ever seen in anything portable. Even QC standard DAC found in the SoC goes much higher (SINAD) than same ones in other phone's. There are some portable USB CS43131 DAC implementations which come very close so far & for a bargain price of 45$. Creative actually still does a decently good job regarding their audio hardware but followed by quirky drivers as always. What LG did & it's terrible is limiting output loudness (mW) in EU and US firmwares for low impedance EMI's so there's little benefit of a great DAC implementation when you can not Amp it.

I do not understand this focus on dual screen by the sites.
It does same of old devices like Sony Tab P and Zte Axon M.

Shanti Dope, 19 Apr 2020Honestly disappointed not to see the Xperia 1 Mk II in the ... moreYou are totally right, the new Xperia mark 2 and this LG both have flat screens which is more easy to use, better cameras than overhyped S20 series, both has headphone jack, Sony always great audio even with front facing stereo setups and LG with Quad DAC, which S20 doesn't have. Sony and LG have great battery optimisation and LG even has dual screen and lower price.

Samsung is objectively loser here but still will sell more, probably.

I do not think OP8 Pro, S20+ and Find X2 are rivals of this.
It is rival for Mi10, OP8 and P40 and future iphone 12. Second tier flagships.

I was expecting at least 110h. Many midranges with 1080p and this huge battery would easily score that high. The 7nm is supposed to do better than SD6xx and 7xx .

8K24p of 47Mbps is ridiculous. Samsung uses 80 and is too low for 8K.
Unless the reviewer has 8K screen, pointless to make any judgement about quality.

Honestly disappointed not to see the Xperia 1 Mk II in the alternatives. It's seriously the only one that rivals this phone in terms of pure versatility and competitiveness.
I don't even understand why that horrible bulky thing with overheating chipset, "disastrous focus" camera, and mediocre endurance rating for a 5000mAh battery phone, has made it into consideration, but not this ABSOLUTELY no-compromise flagship.

Oh right, because it is a popular phone!
Sorry my bad. I forgot I'm in the place where people fall easily on heavy marketing strategies....

There are some extras that aren't mentioned in this review (besides the lack of sound/DAC tests). The LG V60 5G supports also active Styluses (on both screens) and a Desktop mode, that works very similar to the DeX mode on Samsung Galaxy S & Note class phones!
Sadly very few reviewers even mentioned these extras.

LG will pay for the wrong choices.

The increase from 4000mah to 5000 is NOT 20%, but 25.

Also, the charging con is nitpicking, almost 50% in 30 minutes is fast enough.

Even though the V60 will probably be my next phone... a 21:9 screen is simply too tall and too narrow for any mobile device. Whatever happened to the practical utility of a 16:9 FHD 60hz screen? Most videos and apps are designed for that form factor chiefly so there is almost no bezels or black bar obstructions when viewing that screen. It is wide and tall enough for most use cases too. It is such a pleasure to use older phones with that ratio, resolution and framerate. Anything higher is simply pointless for a mobile device because you can barely see an improvement and it comes at a huge cost to battery power draw. Another gimmicky trend that needs to be removed from flagships is the multiple cameras! I reckon that most people only ever need ONE camera on the front for selfies and video calls and ONE higher resolution/framerate camera on the back. Marketing depts that are pushing for more and more cameras on these phones should be sacked wholesale because not only are phones becoming uglier with every added camera, they're also wasting the resources of their own company and their customers. Instead of all these worthless gimmicks can't these manufacturers add more utility to their phones? Such as front facing stereo speakers and mics in an even notchless yet minimal bezel? How about a Digital TV and FM/AM radio tuner that doesn't require an attachment but uses the phones own antenna bands? Or a stylus with integrated dock in every flagship so we can use those large screens as a notepad? Or larger battery capacities in slightly thicker phones so as to remove the uneven camera bump? Or a range of screen sizes ranging from the mini 4 inch, mid 5 and to the max 7 inch so all customer preferences are covered? Or more sensors on the back such as laser range finders, barometers, humidity, infrared and o2/co2 detectors etc if the marketing dept really needs more marketable differentiating features the least they could do is add more utility.

The sudden removal of headphone jack testing makes no sense at all. Why remove something that you guys have been doing well for a decade?

Gsmarena was the only source for guaging the quality of headohone jack in smartphones. This is something that literally nobody else covers and hence this removal makes no sense at all.
