Sony Xperia 5 II review

"The 5 II gets a dedicated Google Assistant button, somewhere around the middle between the power button and the shutter key. There are no options for customizing or disabling that button, it just works. We'd appreciate being able to assign a different function to it, or disable it, but that's not the case here."
If this STUPID assistant button cannot be mapped to something else...then Sony has just lost another sale here in the US! But seeing how they don't really care about the US market anymore I guess it really doesn't matter to them.

This is a solid phone imo. It has everything people would want in a phone and looks really nice on top of it.
The thing I don't understand is why does Sony always get so much hate. Any Sony article always has a war going on

I bought the 1 11 before the release of the 5 11. I'd probably still choose the 1 11 however, given that the camera is marginally better in lower light conditions and the screen resolution is also superior. That said, the 5 11 is considerably cheaper and, with the better screen refresh rate, is going to be a better value option, particularly for gamers.

Ellio74, 28 Sep 2020The flagships from Sony this year are really good. The 1 II... moreWell, looking about other expensive offerings at same price point... its quite justifiable yes.

Stanley Kubrick, 28 Sep 2020I've owned more phones than I care to admit...includin... moreI dont really understand why people hype the wireless charging.
Its all the same to me. Plug it in or leave it on a deck that is already wired to the socket. Either way you wait for it to charge, using phone while charging either way is not recomended, and wireless is much slower at it.
Had the Xperia Dock for my old z1 compact magnetic wireless charge long ago. Went to charger again with X Perf.... didnt miss that dock at all.
Slide it in, put it on, or stick usb in... its simply charging, no substantial difference. Except qi wireless is the slowest option here.

Stanley Kubrick, 28 Sep 2020I've owned more phones than I care to admit...includin... moreI had exactly one phone's USB port break down, and that was the one on my Nexus 6P after two years. Never had that problem on my Xperia I had before the Nexus.

The flagships from Sony this year are really good. The 1 II is a great smartphone, and the 5 II just brings a smaller form factor with other strengths. It's quite unique in its segment.
The price is perfectly justifiable in my opinion.

Supreme smart device quality! Like.no.Other.
If price was more decent it's was the best host cake of 2020.
Still better than most in every aspect!
Kudos Sony!

Anonymous, 28 Sep 2020Great phone, but the lack of wireless charging is a major d... moreI've owned more phones than I care to admit...including Sony...and I have never had any charging port go bad. However...battery heating is a proven method of ruining the battery and wireless charging is guilty of overheating batteries. So, one or the other?

More than 13 hours of web browsing with 120hz refresh rate! That's what I wanted to see.
Size, camera, clean skin, headphone jack,
Sony nailed it

I‘m so much inclined on getting this phone. Price is well worth it. Still better when one can wait for the price to come down a little. With these battery life at 120Hz screen. This is Wahnsinn. Unbelievably good! Great job Sony!

Shanti Dope, 28 Sep 2020Yeah, and with an ugly green tint with high risk of burn in... moreDon't get me wrong, I'll be pre-orsering the X 5 II first chance I get, hopefully tomorrow, but that argument isn't very waterproof..
Constructive criticism isn't like brand betrayal or anything.. no one and therefore also no thing is 100% perfect and flawless, and yes, like the creators of the device believe it or not, even this device has shortcomings - and this is coming from a very loyal Sony products consumer.

I was a big fan of Sony since the Sony Ericsson days but switched to Samsung/iPhone since 2013 and never looked back. This is the first Sony phone that got me interested in a long while, until I found out it lacked wireless charging! Only Sony would make the painfully stupid decision of introducing a flagship phone with a flagship price that lacks wireless charging in 2020; they've become experts in shooting themselves in the foot. Well, that's a showstopper for me, and I'm sure many others; Sony, what drugs are you on??

please test the 3.5mm loudness. below average, average, above, loud very loud...which is it? you keep telling us it's great that it has a 3.5mm plug but don't test the loudness. you test the speaker loudness and frequency response, but no test of 3.5mm plug anymore. what on earth do you have against people that like 3.5mm plugs? if you keep raving about phones that have it why do you refuse to even test the volume? yes i agree we don't need the frequency response but please just test the volume level like you do the speaker. what you are doing right now is completely illogical.

np, 28 Sep 2020Is anyone else perplexed by Sony's ToF sensor? It does... moreAutofocus accuracy in bright and lowlight conditions up to 5m distance, especially for video and 20 fps bursts.
Not relevant for this here building photoshoots, but more for action shots.
5 II will be more of a hit or miss on that cause the lack of iToF, but 1 II will be consistant.

Thats... a great batterylife for the 120 hz. Maybe I'll just leave it on for a while, tho dont see any use for it other than gaming. Which I wont do much...
So yeah, 60 hz probably for me, for that amazing batterylife there.
With my usage pattern.... will be probably 3 days offcharger worth.
Hope we re getting those earphones as a plus for preorder here in EU too, selling those is about 100 € off that selling price.
Good stuff Sony, finally a worthy upgrade for my mobile tastes. B)
