Is the Camera App finally able to switch between different Sensors while filming? Last years model couldn't do that and you always had to stop recording for zooming...

      Something releated to ToF.

By default it is set to focus on multiple points.
Go to cam setting and set it to focus in the center of the frame.

Tann Hauser, 04 Aug 2021Sony uses iToF for AF/object tracking computation, not just... moreNo, your post isn't logical at all. It's nonsensical. You're saying that Sony purposely uses the TOF to reduce the image quality. I mean, seriously?

Anonymous, 04 Aug 2021Who cares what Sony wants?Selling more 1, 1ii and 1iii than 10/10ii/10iii and 5/5ii/5iii means thay are making more money compared to what they would earn if 10 series was main seller.

This is why LG is gone.
The % of V/G phones sold was small compared to K phones.

Other brands out there sell 50, 60 or 80x more units, but revenue is not even 10x more.

Just wait until the Xperia 5 IV instead if anyone wants to upgrade, the newer snapdragon might fix those heating issues, and is probably a better upgrade

Why do 5 series always take better photos than 1?

They keep working on it before it is released.
Both will be even when android 12 arrieves by december.
Sony sometimes redesign the lens during the year for the "september" phone.

This one is obviously limited to avoid burn-in.

Go to xperia forum, almost impossible to find someone that is victim of burn-in.

Nice phone but too expensive. Zenfone 8 is a much better and cheaper proposition for a compact flaghip.

CompactPhones5ever, 04 Aug 2021One thing that's bugging me: https://www.gsmarena.c... moreBecause it isn't, like most 888 phones in my opinion compared to a 865 phone.

Benchmarks aside, the extra heat is not worth the 888 above 865 or maybe even 870.

I mean Xperia 5 III throttles like a nutcake, and even the ZenFone 8 throttles (much less mind you, but still)

And more 888 based phones have these issues.

In my opinion getting the Xperia 5 II is actually better idea.

Also bonus trivia, compare the battery life of 5 II and 5 III, it is mostly the same even while 5 III has a bigger battery.

I hope the next gen SD chips in 2022 will be much better, I consider 888 a fail just like 810 was.

500mAh more battery capacity than last year's Xperia 5 Mk2 and yet it lost two hours of battery endurance rating despite the same 6.1" 1080p 120Hz OLED screen? Well that's it really, I'm staying with Snapdragon 865 and its variations. After all, the photo quality remains the same between the two so I don't lose anything out.

I really like Sony and their approach one smartphones. They are different and loyal either you like it or not.

Yet, they still can´t quite figure how to sell and do proper marketing about their products.

"Now, there are a couple of issues for the 5 III - price and availability." This model was announced in April and only available now (not sure about this) and god knows where. And really expensive. I know their products are amazing, like Motorola, yet 1000€? Even Samsung lowered their prices on the Galaxy S21.

So it remains as a niche product for few people who are still keen on Sony.

Tann Hauser, 04 Aug 2021Sony uses iToF for AF/object tracking computation, not just... moreThat's what happens only when you use the portrait mode. In the regular auto/pro mode, there is not a single reason for the camera to do all the depth mapping stuffs and apply varying amount of blurs to different portions of an image when all it possibly could end up doing is to degrade the quality of a final output and pointlessly increase the processing time. Moreover, Sony never mentioned any of what you just said in the product information page of Xperia 1 III as one of its features - which suggests you're pulling this logic out of nothing else but thin air.. whereas my (and Shui8's) lens quality variation argument can basically explain everything that we're seeing here. The similar incident occurred on other brands (e.g. Huawei) in the past as well, so it's not like we're just imagining stuffs either.

Tann Hauser, 04 Aug 2021Sony uses iToF for AF/object tracking computation, not just... moreIf iToF does the depth mapping, the softness DoF not entirely as 1iii produce. Even the subject (snails) is blurry. 5iii are not. ToF on other phones does the same thing as well by helping AF, but these 1iii sample is a different thing entirely. Its soft across the whole frame.

So by your logic, if iToF is the cause, Sony made a mistake by putting it in 1iii? Because the quality is definitely way worse than 5iii, not by just a small margin.
