Android-Authority, 05 Aug 2021120hz is definitely not a gimmick. "Once you go 120h... morenot at all. i tried 120hz, i liked it, then i went back to my previous 60hz phone and forgot the 120hz screen in something like a couple of minutes lol. and now i don't miss 120hz at all, I look for much more important features in a phone... if it has all including 120hz better, otherwise i don't care can skip them very easily

Nick Tegrataker, 04 Aug 2021Conclusion: Get this over Xperia 1 III if you don't mi... moreI've been preaching for Sony to finally move on from Samsung's panels to their neighbor Sharp IGZO Pro OLED panels. I know I heard somewhere that Sharp decided to stop selling them to OEMs (they sell the LCD panels still) but it couldn't hurt to see if Sharp is willing to make the exception. Sharp is the creator and leader of variable refresh rate. Throw in Sony's X2 (upgrade for next year...hopefully...my guess) image chip for 4K@120Hz w/ 240 or 270Hz motion blur reduction and better touch sampling would make next year's panel SO much better than these. Considering we could see the Mark IV (or V) reach $1,400 next year at the minimum, they need to upgrade some parts and the display with speakers/DAC are two major ones.

"Once you go 120hz, you never go back...." that statement is indeed true.

Stanley Kubrick, 05 Aug 2021"Just like people who are stuck on 60hz display think ... moreI have used two flagships with high refresh rate (120hz) now.
One had 240hz touch sampling rate, my current one has 480hz touch sampling rate.. I am never going back to pedestrian 60hz again.
Maybe get your eyes and touch sensors on your body checked thoroughly.

the rest, hmmm... i don't give a flying ... hm, hm... hot methanous emanation ... its just a matter of needs and preferences. why should i need 120hz for static or quasistatic apps? you know... phone calls, web surfing, taking pictures... i don't waste my time playing games on a 6.1" smartphone when i have a 32" fast monitor.

the rest of your message...? just self-serving inane ramblings on things nobody asked you about or care to ask.

My OnePlus 8T is capable of 120 and I leave it on 60. I have used both and the difference is so hard to really see that it makes little difference. It's just a gimmick like so many other things in today's cell phones.

Tann, your initial claim were that tof helps in giving a certain depth characteristics in normal photos which photographers refers to as lenses with '3d pop'. Now don't change that.

"Some systems can “fake it” in software. The idea is simple: the phone builds a depth map, somehow, of your image. Then it uses software tricks to blur the more distance areas. There’s some potential there, but they’re easily fooled so far. And the computer folks have dialed in a bit of Gaussian blur, but not what photographers call good “bokeh” (the quality of out-of-focus imagery)"

Those quotes are for the 'Portrait Mode'. 🤦
And that conversation is 3 years old! The 1st phone with ToF is Honor View 20, in 2018, in direct explanation for that particular better Portrait Mode! Its embarassing that you caught by own words & resources. You talking about DSLR, do you even know wether me, Nick & RKM own a DSLR/Mirrorless?

Besides the so called Portrait Mode, ToF are just helps for faster, more accurate AF, nothing more than that.

Tann Hauser, 05 Aug 2021You do realise this is a smartphone camera sensor, not a DS... moreYou just basically explained what this phone (or pretty much what ALL phones) does in portrait mode, congrats. Now would you mind answering these three questions that I've asked you in my previous reply?

                                  1. Do you have any idea how problematic it truly would be to have a bunch of slight blurs on random portions of an image based on the low resolution depth information iToF sensor could capture in regular shooting modes for anyone who is even slightly serious about photography?

                                  2. Do you legitimately believe that Sony is actually stupid enough to include such a feature without including a single toggle in a camera app or any explanation on it whatsoever when it could easily upset many of its users in case they found it out?

                                  3. What would be the point having this feature when the portrait mode already does exactly that while also allowing you to control how much blur is applied?

The point of that particular video was to show you that focal plane has nothing to do with sensor's autofocus. He kept the focus (distance) same and reduced the aperture to increase depth of field, which has nothing to do with sensor, only optics. The example was exaggerated to show you as an example.

There's another video which explains focal plane with respect to distance and hyperfocals, but I don't think you can comprehend that. So why bother.
