"but far from absurd"
So paying full price and using 60% of the sensor is not considered absurd?
So paying for a phone more than a photo camera with same sensor and zoom lens + a separate phone cost is not considered absurd?
I think we speak different languages because in my language $1800 for a phone is already absurd.

By the way, what Amazon's subsite Dpreview writes about diffraction is nonsense. Even at f/4, the effect of diffraction will be barely measurable with a 70mm² sensor.

Credit to Sony for releasing this sort of device.Their old school approach to photography, totally opposite from competition's "point and shoot overprocessed" images that'll end up on social networks in a minute is actually refreshing.People are paying €1500 for their iPhones and Galaxys and don't complain about the high price. This Xperia is miles ahead, concerning photo/video possibilities, but its biggest problem is-you have to work hard and be patient to get the best results...might be too complicated for online consumers.Kudos to Sony...👍

Anonymous, 26 Oct 2021What do u mean option to shoot in 20mp? Ofc there is nothin... moreSo what you're (and DPReview) are implying is: The lens itself has only 24mm equivalent field of view, and there's no way for the users to utilise the full sensor area under any circumstance.. right.
If your (and their) assumption turned out to be correct, I must say I would be extremely disappointed. Sony's website doesn't mention anything about this at all, either, and information is presented in a way that the customers will be tricked into believing that the phone actually has a 1 inch 12MP sensor. I'm surprised that Sony decided to rely on this kind of misleading, borderline false advertisement when they are literally aiming at the professionals with this product.

Nick Tegrataker, 26 Oct 2021Edit: Apparently this phone applies an extremely heavy crop... moreYeah it's clear they need a bigger camera module and probably chassis to actually fit a 1" sensor camera (not to mention 2-3 other cameras) on a phone.
Funnily enough they kind of thought of a solution back in 2014, when they released the QX-100 "smart lens" camera with 1" sensor, 3.6x optical zoom (previous models had 1/2.3" but much more zoom), 20.2MP and f/1.8-f/6.3.
This was basically mounted to the back of your phone and connected via Bluetooth/Wifi so your phone was the viewfinder and photo storage.
I just found this out now but it turns out that they followed it up (also in 2014) with an APS-C version, the Sony Alpha ILCE-QX1 which on paper sounds really impressive.

joe nodden, 26 Oct 2021Knew they should've upgraded from a disappointing 12MP... moreThe resolution of each camera on the Xperia Pro-I is 12MP.
By the way, the Xperia Z1 from 8 years ago had a 20MP camera, and their flagships had 20-23MP for a number of years. Those cameras clearly weren't better than this one, as MP count is just one of many factors in camera "quality".

"the sensor area that is effectively used is smaller - even if the pixel pitch remains at 2.4µm like on a 1" sensor."
Not "even", but because(!) the pixel pitch is only 2.4 micrometers. A 115mm² sensor with 12 megapixels has approximately 3.1micrometer pixels.

I thought I'd never read such a positive review for a sony smartphone coming from GSMA. But credit should be given where it's due.
Expensive or not, Sony has done a great job with this one and it shows. As for haters...they're always find something complain about.
