sohail shafayat, 26 Oct 2021since this is a phone, I just hate the narrow screen, so no... moreI find it pretty neat since it makes it really pocket-able. The only moment it bother me is when playing games and I would like something more like a 16/9. But in my pants, the 16/9 was just not possible with a screen that tall (lumia 1520 souvenirs)
I don't understand the bastard ratio tho, why some weird thing like 18 or 19 or 18.3/9? I guess it's just to compensate for selfy camera notch. In fine, you get black bar all the time, for series that are narrower in 16/9, and for movies that are wider in 21/9. Social media don't care since it's just vertical scrolling and the width is never used.

About the sensor crop.
This device is not going to outsell 1iii and 5iii, obviously.
Instead of wasting time creating a 12MP 1/1.31" just for this device, to them was easier to use one already available and crop. In the end the only difference was the space wasted.

Anonymous, 27 Oct 2021The whole sensor area is not used. How is it gathering the ... moreWait i am not saying it is gathering more light than the RX100. It is using different lens. Which is actually slower then the one on the experia. So in theory it could even surpass the RX in this area.
But what i was trying to say, the size of senzor does not matter. What matters is the pixelsize and of course the brightness of the lens. And the pixelsize does not change when you cropp the senzor. I can crop my A7 to apsc and the light i get stays the same.

Marco M, 27 Oct 2021Yes, the sensor is great, but the implementation isn't... moreIts ideal, for a smartphone limited physical space implementation.
12 mpx is the sweet spot for fastest and most reliable functioning Alpha algorithms and AF capabilities.
And the already present photo and video results from many pros previewing it are showing, no difference in quality as to using the full sensor, just the end lower res outputs for photos, which are amazing quality none the less.

Only 4K.
Anyway, rendering an app at lower resolution does not save power. Let the fools believe it is when other phones give "FHD" option.

Marco M, 27 Oct 2021Yes, the sensor is great, but the implementation isn't... moreWhy do you think the sony 1-inch sensor isn't properly used? Yes it's cropped to 60% to fit the lens. Otherwise the camera bump would be enormous. So you don't get the shallow depth of field as if it hasn't been cropped. But you are still gathering the same amount of light.

HutHutHut, 27 Oct 2021God... How I wish this phone was released before I bought m... moreYes, the sensor is great, but the implementation isn't ideal.
Your Mi 11 Ultra may have a marginally smaller sensor, but it's being properly used and so the effective size of your sensor is in fact significantly larger. And it has better processing in auto as well. The 11 Ultra doesn't lack built in features for content creators either, but obviously editing on a computer is better.

It's not for pro's but for techgeeks.

Why should DxOMark change their testing protocol specifically for Sony?
Most people shoot in Auto. The pro mode on Sony isn't any better than pro mode on other phones. Even pixel in Auto mode in 1 sec gives better images than Xperia manual mode gimmick.
If DxOMark tested all phones in pro mode, Sony will still be behind other flagships.
Sony camera team is simply incapable of getting as good image quality as other flagships in auto mode. They should replace their incompetent engineers and hire developers from Google.

By the way, it seems that Google ignores the high resolution modes of their sensors. Maybe Google only chose a Quad Bayer sensor because no other sensor of this size was available. Maybe this also explains why Sony chose a crop of this sensor.

mixedfish, 27 Oct 2021Why bother wondering, Sony don't care for Dxo and will... moreI wouldn't say it will be lower than 2018 midrangers, but I would be surprised to see it in top 10. I agree that DxOMark are crooks running on Chinese money, but the Pro-I's photos are just not very impressive.
