Sony Xperia 1 IV review

I remember when everyone was throwing crap at LG for their phone names, specially the ThinQ ones, because 'too long name', even that carbon skinned brownlee said that, and sony has the worst of them all, worst stupid naming conventions and nobody says anything only me

These night time shots are the best I have seen from a mobile device indeed, so natural. Wish the phone was less expensive and came with a midrange chipset for better battery though.

You people have been ranting about downfalls for ten yrs now.
Yah, End of days was supposed to be yr 2000 also.

How many false hopes, till it becomes notorious?

If not for the wireless charging missing and the old photo app that can't manual on all lenses, I would keep my mark I for a fourth year easily, it almost totally removed my will to replace it.

I wish Sony allowed us to root without losing warranty. If that was possible, I'd only use Sony phone until the end of my life. Love these phones.

But can't afford to lose warranty on a 1000+ eur phone. :(

Tann Hauser, 11 May 2022Yup. Exactly. But they somehow feel targeted. Sony obviou... moreAccording to the latest financial results, unit sales decreased, so the Sony phone user base is shrinking. No wonder they increase the price and doesn't include a charger and cable. This isn't sustainable, though. Increasing prices is fine when your user base is stable or growing. If your user base is shrinking, increasing prices will make less and less people buy your products and when the most hardcore of your user base have had enough, it'll be your downfall.

                  But they somehow feel targeted.
Sony obviously just doesnt care for them or their wants, and it seems to trigger them.

Sony Mobile has a certain type of customers in mind, and is profiting good from that same customers, that are content with what Sony makes for them.

I mean, for ex MusicPro in this 1....an excellent feature.
But, what kind of common denominator average user would see any value in that?
That common guy just wants to surf, play, and easily shoot some good photos. Not create music on the go. All he sees in mobile specs is amount of ram, number of cameras, and camera megapixels, its all and anything he cares about, and how he merits value of a smartphone.

Non common mobile users, and content creators, the ones targeted by Sony, see what Sony is doing here, making a unique all around Pro feature packed phone, and are actually buying.
They arent plenitful, mind you, but are steadily growing in numbers.

Its Sonys new mobile buissness strategy since 3 yrs ago, and it seems quite sustainable, and works well for them.
They could ve gone the uncertain concept-phone LG route, but were obviously smarter, instead chose to target heavily their specific userbase.

Anonymous, 11 May 2022By justifying Sony's actions, you are opening a Pandor... moreI fully agree with you, environmental reasons claimed by manufacturers about unsuppllied chargers are ridiculous, but the most ridiculous is that some people keep defending them. Having a charger and earphones should be a mandatory requirement for every phone (regardless of its price range) but instead of that Samsung, Sony and some others brands decided to follow blindly this bad trend initiated by Apple....Pure nonsense that fanboys try to defend and justify with the most pathetic and ridiculous comments.

119-120 comments & counting, one of the fastest comments accumulated in articles/reviews since 1 II/III, and people are arguing about 1 IV fiercely considering this is the first Xperia Premium heir-lineup that got above 4.2 since 1 I & 1 II due to 1 IV's internal improvements and few external improvements, except few of them that are going well (in the term "don't fix it if it ain't broken"). Is it gonna past the 990s comments of 1 II review from 2020 & 1220s comments of XZ Premium review from 2017 that are so fierce? Remain to be seen, so let the popcorn session begins!
                      .
And it's great to see 1 IV really ironed out all the issues that it has in the past to the best Xperia device right now considering the niche market Sony is targeting for. Hopefully, the remaining issues of 1 IV like throttling could be fixed in the next iteration.

BETTER at least 🤷‍♂️....well for those who thinks SONY is doing it better than SAMSUNG,camera-wise it's a big "NO"

Mathematically they are doing same thing....(only Genius in this field will understand) the fact itself is hiding market-wise 🙃.

Take it from me,big sensors with unique module set ups (undermining pixel counts) have always been the best in photo/videography world....but thinking twice, with this formula, expected solutions are hard to archive except you are ready to maintain these key-pionts.

Better processor (which will spoil Sony's show, and that is why the formula works better for Apple)..;P1

Consider pixel counts (even with big sensors) besides it's an android with less superior processors(anti-bionic😂 if I may say), at least 50megapixels (the reason xiaomi mi 11 ultra triumph on DXO score board, then the Google-pixel too)..;P2

Like I said earlier...Sony with better sensors but poor pixels and Samsung with rich pixels but poor sensors 🙃🙃🙃

[deleted post]What he means is that it seems that only fans praise Sony phones, but most people don't want them, as demonstrated by the low sales. He doesn't forbid you from being a fanboy.

Big progress for Sony but, speakers aside, S22 ULTRA (which I own) is still overall better much more refuned smartphone.

What blows me away in S22U is exaxtly the same which Sony lacks : superb front camera especially at night, great back camera especially 10x zoom ones, pleasant processing, vibrant colors, tons of details and second to none noise handling.

                                    Second thing is screen.

Sony's one just cant stand against much bigger, extremely bright (1700 nits at auto) vivid, colorful S22 ULTRA AMOLED screen, absolutely the best I've ever seen with great dynamic range and excellent sunlight legibility.

                                    So sorry sony.

Although my very first smartphone was Xperia Z and once like very much its design (from that point only Galaxy S because of poor quality of Xperia cameras ) I have no doubts that Xperia I IV is overall inferior to S22 U.

With smaller, dimmer screen, after all still worse cameras set (no night mode, no AF at front, smaller zoom etc), worse battery life and dated design with thick frames and above all - without S pen.

And to make things even more unatractive- Sony sets as always steep price .

I've notice that among gsma community are many die hard sony fans/fanboys who praise anything Sony release but the market verify that anyway.

It's a bit sad seeing it's price tag and looking at size of ultra wide sensor and it's corner softness. Tho center is crazy sharp, it's not exactly ultra in being wide, so I wonder why.
Low light get is also obvious with such small sensor...

Anonymous, 11 May 2022Possibly the first brand to omit the cable from the retail ... moreHow many cables and chargers you need, I got plenty of them because they were with every device(not just a phone) and when I charge them, I don't need all those, I need just few.
Maybe if I wanted to charge everything at once it would made sense, I got no such needs tho.
                                        So no need for cable.
