l had Z1 Compact and Z3 Compact, the touch stopped working on both of them because the screen had a tiny crack at a corner -Nothing crazy- So l had to say goodbye to Sony. Anyone knows if they are still using similar display technique?

No TSMC=No buy. Sorry Sony, it's great that you've kept the headphone jack and microSD slot, but that's not enough. Stop using overheating chipset or else no buy. Buy Zenfone 9 instead!

        Kudos Sony!

Sony is by far the best mobile in the market. There is not bloatware and the hardware is unmatched. Since I started with Sony phones, I cannot see going back to any other brand. The camera button is one of the best features as well as the fact that iphone narrow enough to hold in one hand.

Syuser, 01 Sep 2022Being a group of Xperia users and looking by this Arena... moreBokeh is top? It's the worst of all, can't cope even with the easiest environment around.
Battery? It gets high overall rating just for a good stand-by, but otherwise nothing special.
Design? Too long to be comfortable.
But since you have been ironic from the beginning, I could accept that.

So, what do we have here?
A fraction smaller size? Does not matter when still 1 cm longer than all others (and here longer does not mean better). Pass.
Hideous thermal management with a problematic CPU? Not exactly happy about it.
Amazing camera performance in good light, even though noise reduction is in fact terrible and keeps fuzzy edges. But overall performance is fine, probably for the first time in a Sony phone.
A larger battery with a long endurance, at least on paper. And then you take iPhone 13 or 13 Pro and, voilá, their web browsing and video times are nearly the same with half the battery size? Samsung's times are not that far behind considering smaller battery. Asus beats it when you compare the times by battery sizes. Something's wrong, Sony...
A small package with no nonsense included? OK, accepted.
And the rest? No change in design does not matter, remains Sony style. Slight to none changes in other specs however do matter. And for a higher price...
Overall? No, thank you, not impressed.

I'm sorry but the 5 III looks miles better than this. I don't think the 5 series phones should emulate the 1 series phones. They had a unique look with the rounded, shiny edges and glossy back. I always thought the 5 series design language was always supposed to be more consumer-friendly and 'pretty', now they took what looked great on the 1 series (flate edges, matte finish) and put it on the 5. It literally looks like the 10 IV now.

Many thanks to GSMArena team for the excellent review!
One question: did you happen to test the overheating during video recording?
There are numerous user reports on reddit and other sites that report massive overheating problems with the Xperia 1 iv during camera use. Some users reported camera switching itself off after mere 60-120 seconds of video recording due to overheating.
Due to its smaller size, heat disspiation might be an even bigger issue with the Xperia 5 iv, so I really wonder if Sony improved thermal management measures on the 5 iv or not.

Not including a charger at a $1000 is bad enough but no cable in the box it’s beyond petty, good USB-C cables cost quite a bit. Just another green-washing cash grab. Sony should have acted different, like with their belief in the headphone jack.

Being a group of Xperia users and looking by this Arena's testing, it gives:
                          1. Top camera processing ever not only in Xperia (1 and 5 got this processing in HDR and some auto modes, but not it's all the time and mostly for all the sensors!), but compared to any smartphone! The sharpness and the natural color rendering it's simply LIKE.NO.OTHER and Sony took note (later but best will all in-house-made sensors!). Even 1 mk4 isn't this good overall as this test shows. BOKEH IS TOP NOW! (Sony why do you like the last for the best?! Money?!)
                          2. AMAZING battery lifetime. In fact top in any top class smartphone (that can be called smartphone).
                          3. AMAZING compact design not too big not too small and it’s weight, oog 172g!
                          4. AMAZING screen design, black reproduction and overall performance now with the ideal brightness! In fact it’s top compared to any top device for it’s 4k 120hz with proof in 2022 by Arena’s testing.
                          5. Last generation CPU and GPU that in our testing will surely last 5 years at least with no complicated issues!
                          6. Loud stereo 360 in such well-designed device!
                          7. Wireless charging now. Such a great surprise for a compact from Sony!
                          8. Most clean and durable Android system.
                          9. Now the price is on par regarding the important details in this Arena review. Surely will get better in time!
In our experience only Sony ELM and 1mk1 were over the top at their time. Now 5mk4 it’s a boom! Sony you did it perfect now by your best camera, tv, gaming departments in this small one!
Thank you Arena for this AMAZING PROOF!

Ps: About the heat for the true Sony fans it’s not an issue at all. There are so many ways of doings things great and regarding it’s physical design it’s simply the best! So the ones BS-tting again simply don’t know what they are talking about. Sony is too good not to THE DADDY of electro world! We are sooo happy to see what comes with HONDA partnership!

On Amazon Germany, you can snag a Find X5 Pro for the same price as this Sony, hence my argument lol. Hope you manage to find a Zenfone 9, that's a proper phone unlike this.

That's Galaxy S22 Ultra money, and it has DeX. I have no interest in the GT2 Pro since it doesn't have USB3 with video output support, and I always use it all the time.

YUKI93, 01 Sep 2022Lol, Samsung Galaxy S22+ is also $999 and you don't ev... moreNever said that Samsung had better efficiency over this. Both are cr*p when it comes to sustained performance. However, I don't see a reason why you would pick this over the X80 Pro, GT 2 Pro, Find X5 Pro etc. Now don't get me wrong, they all suffer from overheating and throttling, but less than Sony or Samsung, plus vivo and Oppo have better cameras.

Now THIS is how you do the best phone!

                                    Price tag is sad tho...

Crazy Weirdo, 01 Sep 2022Extremely expensive for what it is, and not to mention that... moreLol, Samsung Galaxy S22+ is also $999 and you don't even get a headphone jack or microSD card support. Forget about cooling as Samsung also doesn't have one and they always throttle the SoC a lot. Heat Suppression and battery bypass? Not even a single chance. If I own a flagship Samsung, I'd be WAY more than happy to trade it for this Sony.

P.S If the ASUS Zenfone 9 is officially available in my country, that will be my top choice. But since it doesn't happen, this is definitely on my list.

Extremely expensive for what it is, and not to mention that ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE "cooling" or should I say, the lack of.
But don't worry everyone, Sony's ponies will defend this until their last breath, for it seems we can't criticize their smartphones. Nevertheless, they are more than happy to dunk on other brands, notably Oppo and Vivo lol.

Edit: Totally forgot about Sony's software "support". 2 OS updates for a flagship is a JOKE. Plus, they aren't shipping a cable with the darn thing anymore. But oh, I'm such a hater for stating obvious facts.
