If it had the 8+ gen 1, it would be the closest thing to "the perfect phone" in this day and age. Honestly, only problem this phone really has is throttling under load. 8+ gen 1 would definitely help a lot. But unethical businesses practices hold technological progress and consumer interests back.

It could be that Sony wants to make a point for the existence of the pointless Xperia 1 lineup. Honestly, 4k displays on a phone are utterly gimmicky and pointless. Also that moving telephoto is also not worth it and other solutions offered by other companies work same or better. Only thing was wireless charging, which now Xperia 5 iv has.

All these indicate that Xperia 5 iv is clearly the superior phone already compared to 1iv, despite costing less. If it got 8+ gen 1, sale of 1 iv would drop to 0, which makes less profit for Sony, since that's more expensive.

All of these business practices are bad for consumers and technology in general. Any business practice that reduces value for customers and/or makes a product intentionally inferior for sake for more profit is an evil practice indeed.

It would be wiser and more sustainable for Sony to drop 4k display completely and just keep the Xperia 5 lineup. And maybe also create a Xperia 5 lite lineup which is better than Xperia 10 series. It would be more welcoming.

Anonymous, 02 Sep 2022Only super ultra fans will choose this phone over the S22. ... moreXperias lose value very quickly so in a year's time should be able to get one for around £300 or less second hand. Many people who get them as presents get rid so they can get a Samsung instead so there should be some bargains out there before too long.

Hot devices are not good for long term battery life. Also why does Sony insist on using narrow screens? Terrible for gaming because your basically getting a small sub 6 inch display that's been stretched from top to bottom.

I really wanted to buy the Xperia 5 IV because my OP5 is on its' last legs but I refuse to settle for yet another SD furnace. Hopefully Sony opts for the SD 8 Gen 2 for the Xperia 5 V and doesn't do any other shady business. I really need an upgrade...

In hot weather the phone will run into issues and the camera will shut down. There's TONS of evidence on that topic for the Xperia 1 and already some for the Xperia 5. SD dropped the ball (again) and Sony doesn't seem to care to at least use the SD 8+ instead of this housefire. Hard pass on this phone.

I like to actually challenge things the GSM team write and when they're over rating phones and devices it can be discussed here (specially one that doesn't offer anything in the box at all now). Guess you're cool with mediocrity but oh well.

Sadly, wasted time for waiting so long for this device. A hyper-throttling, hot-running SOC instead of 8+ Gen 1 is a major-letdown for this in other aspects great piece of tech.
But not acceptable in this price-range.In relation to my Galaxy A52s, which is good in every aspect and also has expandable memory and headphone-jack, it's a no-brainer to pay 4x more for this. I'm very disappointed and will keep an half-closed eye on mk V. Zenfone 9 looks not bad, too,
exceot memory expansion, but I'm not sure to trust Asus in terms of reliability.

Anonymous, 02 Sep 2022Only super ultra fans will choose this phone over the S22. ... moreYeah, the problem isn't that Galaxy S22 is an overall superior phone to Xperia 5 IV (In fact I would say the latter has the upper hand in terms of sheer hardware specs), but that S22 is *so much* cheaper which is making it tough for Xperia to beat its price-value proposition. The fact that the new Xperia has the rather outdated non-plus variant of 8 Gen 1 is making it even more difficult for Sony to compete this year.

                                    ...£949

lmao yeah I'll just buy an iPhone for that money.

                                      cons:
"No charger and no cable in the box.
                                      Cameras lack Night Mode.
Easily overheats under peak load, which causes heavy performance and refresh rate throttling."
the only con i found is the overheating. charger + cable? just a week ago i dumped at least one dozen of usb-b and usb-c cables and some 3-4 chargers. night mode? as many times before stated, i do not like overly processed "night pictures" that look like (artificial and poorly looking) dusk pictures. by far i prefer to use a tripod or some kind of support for the arm and take real quality night picture using correct exposure time. yet, i already have a 5 III and it makes not much sense to upgrade to IV, i will wait for 5 V.
