Sony Xperia 5 IV review

cons:
"No charger and no cable in the box.
Cameras lack Night Mode.
Easily overheats under peak load, which causes heavy performance and refresh rate throttling."
the only con i found is the overheating. charger + cable? just a week ago i dumped at least one dozen of usb-b and usb-c cables and some 3-4 chargers. night mode? as many times before stated, i do not like overly processed "night pictures" that look like (artificial and poorly looking) dusk pictures. by far i prefer to use a tripod or some kind of support for the arm and take real quality night picture using correct exposure time. yet, i already have a 5 III and it makes not much sense to upgrade to IV, i will wait for 5 V.

        1. Outdated on the launch. 2. Trust me and skip any phone with 8gen1. Buy 8gen1+ or wait for 8gen2.

Dissapointing as they will have to throttle the scamsung fabbed overheating SD8 Gen1 more than the 1 IV as its more compact.

Now I can buy an S22 for about $680. If Sony wants to sell this phone, it needs to release it early or price it lower. The battery life is excellent, though.

Well even if this late already, Sony deserves a pat on the back for yet another outstanding camera. Yes late, late, late. How I wish they could have done this earlier so they can fight neck and neck with other camphone killers way back.

many silly comments about it. It's feature complete and awesome phone, just too expensive, the only real drawback

Anonymous, 01 Sep 2022As much as I'm impressed with this phone, I'm not... moreA 5 ii user here. I'd say it is still worth buying. Bought the phone since it came out and have been using it everyday since. I use it for just about everything, calls, music(the sound quality and control is superb), taking pictures and gaming and it works just as well as it did the first day i bought it.

Yes, the phone heats up quite quickly but once you removed the background cache(this phone doesn't have too many bloat ware as other phones do) the heat is manageable. But performance wise, it's runs way smoother than Samsung phones with less heating and lagging.

The elongated structure of the phone actually makes it more ergonomic when playing landscape-mode games.
I might be saying this out of my user bias but I have owned 19/20:9 phones but the 21:9 ratio does help with playing landscape mode games because of the left and right side finger clearance so you'd see more of the screen coz your button fingers are cleared of your main character/player.

The wider screen does makes gaming a more fun experience.

SkullSamCandy , 01 Sep 2022Aii, Sony phones are hideously ugly, and the lame stock And... moreAre they now? Personally, I believe Samsung and Google phones are quite ugly.

Sony's sleek yet plain industrial design is actually very eye appealing and friendly to the touch.

It might seem a bit too plain for the majority of the modern day consumer, but I wouldn't call it as far as ugly..

                          Key findings:

                          - Excellent battery life. Small-ish screen size and a large 5000mAh battery combo are easily a huge win for the new Xperia.

                          - Display that can FINALLY reach beyond 900nits, and hits nearly 1000nits depending on the image quality mode being used - fantastic. This is what everyone has been asking for (but opposed by a few Sony fans in this forum, for some unknown reason) and something a product dubbed as a camera-centric phone desperately needed. Sony listened to people's voices and made a substantial improvement in this regard, and I'm happy for them. Great colour accuracy as well - not much to complain about regarding the quality.

                          - Aggressive auto-switching of refresh rate between 60 and 120Hz, however, must be fixed. I've seen some people complaining about this particular issue on the internet and it's jarring that Sony hasn't tried to mitigate the issue on the newest model.

                          - The main camera is pretty decent, with fairly conservative noise reduction and neutral colours. I can spot some sharpening and weird rendition of finest details, but at least they are not mushed together like on the Exynos-powered S22 series. The low-light photos show pleasantly processed textures, but at the same time it seems to blow out highlights quite often and they are pretty noisy as well. Good quality considering the sensor size, but they need a larger sensor next time.

                          - The same overall likable trait continues with the UWA camera, although the colour fringing is really noticeable on this lens. The telephoto, on the other hand, is a straight-up downgrade from 5 III's great 2.9-4.2x dual focal length camera and produces what I exactly expected from it. It's not bad by any means, but the lack of reach is obvious compared to the predecessor and I wish Sony kept the old telephoto setup.

                          - Good performance until you start pushing it hard - Other 8 Gen 1 equipped phones also throttle as well, but this thing is easily one of the worst offenders among them, so better to avoid it if you play any graphics-intensive games or it would lose half the performance within 30 minutes.. unless, if you're planning to pay extra to get Sony's rumoured new cooling case with it as well :-)

                          - Only 2 years of OS updates in 2022, for a phone that costs over 1K. Let that sink in.

A solid all-rounder everything considered. A MicroSD card slot and a headphone jack are nice additions as well, but if one doesn't care about receiving only 1 more OS update and their next phone must be made by Sony, I would tell them to get a now-significantly-discounted Xperia 5 III over this. I found "The competition" section on the last page of this review pretty spot-on, and IMO last year it must have been definitely easier for Sony to grab people's attention.

Oooof, Sony had all the time and still used the flawed SD8G1 processor. Ladies and Gentlemen, get ASUS Zenfone 9 and you get a slightly better phone than this.

Anonymous, 01 Sep 2022set shutter 1/2s + iso 640That doesn't seem to be a great idea as most phones I've seen fail to stabilise the frame for half a second unless you have extremely steady hands.

The main camera of 5 mark 1. Proof there is no need to change cameras for new sensors of same spec every year like Apple does.

Camera samples are very good indeed, but not giving an option of a night mode like feature is rather disappointing.
