But even at 256GB, 4k60 is just a gimmick if it fills up the storage in no time. Same argument could even be said about 4k30. Just using 1080p30 or 1080p60, depending on the preference, seems like a good middle ground as long as manufacturers are scalping storage instead of giving the amount of storage that fits the money spent.

Reality..., 22 Mar 2024Well, the reverse of your experience happened to me. My old... moreI shared many thoughts in two other comments. For your case, you would have been able to keep all your data and didn’t need cloud storage (I don’t use it either other than the free tier because I don’t like monthly subscriptions) if you backed up your entire phone to external storage. I‘ll say for backup purposes an HDD is okay but SSDs are so cheap now that it should not be a major investment to get like a half terabyte external SSD (at least not in first world countries).

Using a microSD as a help for too small internal storage (Btw I personally do this on my laptop but I hate it and would rather have bigger internal storage. As said previously, it‘s a bandaid solution) is not a good solution in any way except cost. It for sure is the cheapest way to get big storage. But as I said in my initial comment, flash is so cheap now that manufacturers should just put enough of it into the phone in the first place. If I can get a 1TB SSD for $40, why do some $500 phones still ship with 128GB? Why are storage upgrade prices like $100 in the case of high end phones? It’s the phone industry (and many others like laptops as well) ripping off people and then for the lower end (those who can’t afford overpriced storage upgrades) they proclaim slow, unreliable microSD as the solution even though they could just put more storage in the first place.

What I‘m trying to say is that when people say stuff like „I don’t care if it only has 64/128GB as it has microSD support“ on phones of the price class of A35, that’s actively helping the companies scalping the storage prices. On super low end sub $100 phones, sure, more 128 GB might not realistically fit into the budget (yet) and microSD can be used (for the time being). But anything higher and 256GB and more should be standard or at least an option at not much more cost. And especially at this $400-500 mark, 128GB should straight up not exist in 2024 and the 256GB should be sold at the price the 128GB is sold now.

Firefox, 22 Mar 2024Internal storages are not 100% safe either. Due to software... moreBest on-device offline solution would be (big enough) internal storage for all files and SD for backup. But also the SD would have to be encrypted well enough that it’s not possible for someone to take it out and steal all data. The backup part is nowadays often handled by cloud. And the advantage of cloud is that the data is still there even after the phone is lost or stolen. Disadvantage is the cost of a cloud service. That can be circumvented by manual backups, but they are not as reliable or convenient as cloud, and you have to buy and manage your own hardware. I personally store everything on internal and backup on a external drive (which is SSD, so the backups don’t take ages even though they are incremental).

AnonF-1006353, 23 Mar 20242 things: 1) only buy reliable and genuine microSD cards... more1) The one I bought was from the biggest electronics retailer in Europe so I think it should be genuine and reliable enough
          2) I have backups. Still an unnecessary hassle and I bet you the average non-techie does not create backups of everything. And I did not mention the horrible performance when scrolling through images and videos. Video playback didn’t even work smoothly sometimes, because again the SD card or the phone decided they didn’t want to access the files as fast as they could at this moment, because an update broke something or some other weird reason I just don’t want to deal with. And even when an SD card works at the specified speed, it‘s way slower than internal storage, which again means scrolling is slow, like a HDD. I don’t want to deal with HDD-quality storage (speed and reliability wise) in 2024 anymore.

What good is a lot of OS updates if after the 2nd year the phone is slow and laggy? Because if the Soc isn't powerful enough, granted it will be slow opening apps, transitions etc

This is a great all round device and a real winner. I'd be happy to replace my device with this.

Remember that this phone will get 4 OS updates and has the excellent One ui. Plus you'll easily get official repairs and there will be no shortage of accessories like cases.

                1) only buy reliable and genuine microSD cards
                2) always create backups, no matter what storage the "productive" system is running.

Works like a charm using syncthing in a local network.

I read gsmarena's long term review of the galaxy A54 in which they said the A54 was the choppiest phone they've ever tested long term, i wonder what will happen to this phone since it uses the same chipset. Also, this is in the same price bracket as the redmi note 13 pro +? Price is too high

Super Android 22, 22 Mar 2024Well this phone can't record 8k video (which is pointl... moreI don't want to walk around with a portable ssd just to be able to access media files I made 15 years ago locally. I don't want to use NAS or cloud. Keep it simple, man. Switching to new phone? Just put the microSD with your media archive in new phone, that's it. No syncing, no network lag, just have it available instantly. This is even more convenient if your old phone is broken but not worth a repair anymore, so you won't have to go lengths to get your files off of it. Some people really like to overcomplicate.

Anonymous, 22 Mar 2024After having all my photos corrupted on the SD card on my o... moreReal solution is to make more reliable microSD cards. I wonder how is the reliability of UFS cards.

I think the Redmi Note 13 Pro+ is a very solid choice here, for around the same price or cheaper if you search, actually €280 8/256 in this moment from Spain with a promotion. It has a better Soc, better IP68, better screen dolby vision, equally good cameras and arguably better in some aspects, 120W fast charge etc

And for a bit more, €475 you can get a S23FE that leaves the A35 in the dust, if you must stay with Samsung. The A35 must come down to at least €299 to be competitive. Also A55 must come down in price, both overpriced.

Samoderzhets , 22 Mar 2024It's the same phone more or less A54 had storage issue, if they upgrade in this model definetely that good reason to consider A35 over A54.

Due to software or hardware issues a smartphone can stop working and only solution is flash stock rom which erases all previous data from internal storage. I had such issue in 2020 but luckily my default media storage was my SD card so service centre removed the SD card before flashing & my data remains safe.

Anonymous, 22 Mar 2024After having all my photos corrupted on the SD card on my o... moreWell, the reverse of your experience happened to me. My old Android started to bootloop suddenly and just died, nothing was recoverable from the internal memory and lost all the photos and documents that were in it (and no I'm NOT a fan of cloud storage options where I'm not in complete control of my data storage or access). But I had a very good micro sd card which I bought from a reputed store (a V30 standard SanDisk), and only the photos and documents I backed up to that were saved that day.

                                    So two things.
                                    1. Bashing on micro sd cards is not the way forward. It remains an invaluable specification for many smartphone users, especially outside of the US amd continental Europe where data plans are still very expensive (and also slow).
Having the option to have an SD card never hurts anyone, just like having the ability for dual sim card usage...

                                    2. Buy memory cards ONLY from reputed stores and brands and most importantly, find the card specification that suits your smartphone!

Many people just insert a class 10 card and try to transfer/ record 4k directly onto it and wonder why it failed.

Now I'm filly aware this isn't what happened to you but the takeaway is to buy a good genuine card that suits the bare minimum spec needed for your device.

                                    Just my two cents....

And it’s really just a bandaid solution when the real solution is to provide enough options for internal storage (at least a 256GB option and better a 512GB option as well) at prices that are not ripoff.

AnonF-1006353, 22 Mar 2024Somewhere you gotta store all these 200MP pictures, raw fil... moreWell this phone can't record 8k video (which is pointless unless you have like a £4000 8k tv) or take 200mp pics (again pointless, i use an app let lets me do 4k 80mbps recordings on my find x5 and just waste) or output high looseless FLAC audio.

Youre looking at £80 for 1tb MicroSD cards on deal, price is £100 on the low, £130 on the higher end. Can grab a portable SSD for about £45-55 for 1tb, about £80-100 for 2tb (throw everything on that and then have all the free space on your device for when you're out). I do guess at this price it is just nice to have the option but plenty of ways (and cheaper) round the issue.
