Samsung S8000 Jet review: Airborne

08 July 2009
It's that time of the year and the living is easy: pool parties, blockbuster movies and new gadgets. The Samsung S8000 Jet sure knows good timing and gallantly promises a bit of everything...

Anonymous, 10 Jul 2009GSMA failed to pick up on the fact that the UI is slow and ... moreUp until now, Nokia's S60 devices were laggy and slow, yet they sold in big numbers. So, is your judgment biased towards the "laggy UI" of one firm, or do you reserve the same judgment for all?

Swiping and scrolling may not be smooth like the iPhone, but it's very good, nonetheless; certainly not something to cause frustration.

And, since you're so eager to make a comparison with the iPhone, I must remind you that, like the iPhone has over the Jet, there are many pluses the Jet has over the iPhone, too.

Nothing's perfect. It's a good attempt from Samsung, and a great phone, too. I hope they further build on the platform; perhaps even have an SDK for developers. Now, that would be fun!

Anonymous, 10 Jul 2009GSMA failed to pick up on the fact that the UI is slow and ... moreIt's not slow, just a bit slower... and it costs almost half of iphone so i can live with that. I could go on bout the screen, resolution, camera, video rec, flash, cpu, supported formats etc etc but u'll still be in love wid ur iphone. When i spend my hard earned cash it bout 'value for money'. How often will i be using the album art or slide photo browser anywayz ? That is not a deal breaker.
And once again- it's a tad slower when browsing through album covers, that is all. Elswhere it's smooooooth.

GSMA failed to pick up on the fact that the UI is slow and buggy. Swiping and scrolling is not smooth like the iPhone, even if the cpu is 2x faster. In fact scrolling is smoother on the tocco ultra. Samsung obviously have inefficient software developers.

I really miss the copy/paste- or cut/paste-function that Omnia has. Anyone know if there is such a function on Jet that I haven't found?

Quite a few people say they can't delete pre-installed widgets and have been told they've reached their limit whats that all about? anybody had this problem?

I noticed one highly annoying thing concerning the installation of additional J2ME applications (middlets) on the Jet. Seems like those get installed in the 'Shared Memory' area of the phone which is only about 6MB whereof there are about 500KB free on a brand new phone. Even if you remove all preinstalled J2ME apps (Rollercoaster3D and Google Maps cannot be removed) this will give you hardly enough space for installing more (complex) applications. And it seems as if the size of the 'Shared Memory' area cannot be configured. A real shame considering that the phone comes with roughly 2GB builtin storage!

Maybe it's not important one... but I think JET's Bluetooth spec is version 2.1, not 2.0 as described on the review.
And does anyone have ever used BT v2.1 feature like simple pairing? I would like to know details about differences.

Just try yesterday, the phone is smooth but not all place is smooth, they still need to tune the Music Player, during lanscape mode, the transition effect is not smooth.

Overall is ok, but not extremely speedy, I believe the future firmware will made this phone even more great.
