Nokia N900 review: A new hope

I believe that their next Maemo device should have all the features that apparently are lacking in this model. A four row keyboard with centered spacebar. Quad band frequency compatibilty with 3G/3.5G/4G/LTE, like they do with quad band for voice so you can use it with any carrier, especially if you want to sell it to mass market. The popular consensus at the moment is a keyboard to go along with the on screen keyboard. A dedicated speakerphone profile so I don't have to answer the call and then push another button to switch to that mode, sometimes I rather keep it in speakerphone mode and just answer it as usual by pressing the send/call key and not have to place the phone on my ear. And yes it is larger than my E71 which is an excellent phone, but I would take it in a heartbeat if the above were all reality. Video should definitely be 30 FPS, Camera should be a little more decent. Kickstand more robust. Add voice dialing, MMS. Don't get rid of FM transmitter, Video out, Infrared. Maybe a D pad or trackball like the HTC Hero or similar as well. Portrait / Landscape mode should have worked for any use of the device. Finally ensure it has really good (high)sound volume on the earpiece and speakers for noisy environments. What I do now with my E71, I would like to do all the same, but with all the new features of the N900 added, presumably to the next generation N900. Thanks for listening! Strictly my opinion (Techno Geek, Linux, BSD, WinXP, explorer !)

What's the point in a review that basically lists a wish list of things rather than reviewing what is on offer? How many times did the reviewer say that they hoped/expected Nokia would fix issues. What if they don't? Pointless statements with no foundation. If you speak to Nokia and they tell you that this will happen before release then fine but I have no interest in how easy a journalist think it would be to fix issues.

Anonymous, 01 Dec 2009I wonder how u can compare a cellphone and a laptop and fee... moreIve had an N900 for about a week in the UK and I love it. Its much better than the Iphone 3GS I used to own. It's £30 a month on vodafone and whilst i could never get a decent signal on the N97 the N900 just works and even in places the n97 said it didnt exist
Internet browsing is the best and downloading is fast on 3.5G. I think its about 10mbps. 20 times slower than my home fibre connection but still faster than ive ever seen on 3.5G
top banana and long may it continue

Wait Nokia out without hardware keyboard and with potrait mode support.
The hardware keyboard make this phone over bulky. The non support potrait (at the moment) make this smart phone looks dumb.

Usman, 06 Dec 2009Nokia could not compete with Anroid at all.It would in browsing, multitasking, user friendliness (actually, this is more of a personal opinion), customization, apps (you can port them from linux), social networking (you don't need an app for facebook since it works on it's browser).
Now, apart from the first two things, all of this could just be a matter of opinion but clearly maemo can compare itself to android.

Hello, after reading through the test I have two questions:
The article comparing some properties of the N900 (e.g. screen quality and slider quality) against other types of mobile phones? Could you give a comparison also for the N810?
I am pleased to hear that the GPS unit works well in the N900. Did you, by chance also try it in a moving vehicle to see how it keeps the lock?

Why i coudlnt like this phone. First of all its not COMPLETE. FAIL. i want my phone works DECENT out of the box. N97 failed at it. N900 runs not bad but where r applications? nobody cares with cheap crap useless application. i mean nobody even doenst care to DEVELOP applications for this phone. And what about STYLE. it looks not stylish. i dont want to carry a brick in my hand pls. Nokia lest their customers with BULK designs. i better keep my Nokia E71. no phone to buy these days :/
