Nokia N900 review: A new hope

26 November 2009
It’s crystal clear by now that the Nokia N900 has almost nothing to do with the traditional Nseries values. The full QWERTY side-slider may look similar to its double-digit mates but the Maemo experience is completely different...

Anonymous, 01 Dec 2009AFAIK, the N900 is made or shall I use the word "assembled"... moreWell, when my brother tried to get it the first time at the Nokia store in New York it was sold out. When he got it, his friend went along to get one as well. My brothers seemed to be "ok" but his friend said it would not go past the nokia start screen. Its been about a week since they had it now and I dont know if the problem consists for his friend. As for my brothers, I was playing with it, going online and such, which is very nice but it crashed. I put it down after that. But that was the only problem I experienced with it. All the featues are real nice like scrolling through the screens and the animation. There are some bugs but I feel thats typical of new nokia phones. My brother also said there was no arrow when he tried to use the turn by turn navigation.

[deleted post]In the US, you can get a lot of mobile free-of-cost on plans from different carriers! In fact, $599 is also a high price that way, but people love Nokia so they don't hesitate to buy it. Otherwise, all other brands are available without any price.

SE's X10 & Nokia's N900 are being launched soon. Provided SE sticks to their launching date which is a pretty rare case. I am just waiting to see which one has more bug. Look wise the X10 wins by a mile. N900 is like a brick & is heavy.

It only started shipping out now as of now. You must be of the very lucky ones to lay your hands on. I would be very surprised if this phone is bug free from day one. Tell me about it coz I am interested to know.

I wonder how u can compare a cellphone and a laptop and feel sensible? "The phone is thicker than the laptop"? What is that all about? Sure it could have been thinner, but then you'd complain that somehing or the other is too close, hence rendering the phone a failure. For all of you talking about a "brick" for a phone, I wonder what type of phone u are using, if u want a stylish phone, go get a D&G edition or an Armani edition phone. I mean come on, who compares a bus with a mini cooper?? Just doesn't make any sense. What I see people on most, if not all these phones' review pages doing, is digging hard for some little silly things that the phones lack, like an FM transmitter, no digital compass, no gps, no dv-whatever tv receiver, no voice dialling and other trivial stuff that only uses up valuable ram spaces on most phones simply because the users don't use them. Some of u don't even know that only a few cities the world over have availabilities for the tv receiver u are kicking the phone manufactures to give to you, some don't even knoe how to use many of these additional accessories that a phone may carry, and if these reader comments segments are read carefully, you will see what I am talking about. Listen people, if you see a phone and you read the specs, and like the phone, then go ahead and get it. Asking for opinions here just doesn't do justice. I've bought phones that if I'd listened to what other people had to say, I wouldn't have bought. Phones that turned out to be great phones, like the N82, the Omnia and the N97 just to name a few. These people telling of their experiences with the phones are just damn liars, never even seeing the phone except in a tv ad or on the internet. Read the spec sheet for yourself, read the reviews, and then make a decision on whether a phone will suit you or not. Afterall you will be the one using it.

Slowly but surely more apps will be developed for Maemo OS. The addage goes "TIME WAITS FOR NO MAN." Basically, you are getting a smart phone with very little or no apps at all at this point in time. While waiting for new apps to come out, N910 is in the pipeline so to speak. It defeats the purpose of having a smart phone my fren.

Im not to sure as to how often people get to have to good devices in the same home such as a ps3 or 360 but I bought the N97 in Aug. and my brother just bought the N900. i must say I like the N97 but after palying with the N900 I envy the Maemo OS. It is something I have never seen on a Nokia Device. i feel after a few updates and possiably some decent apps it will be the ultimate Iphone killer. Im rational, I had the ipone, couldnt stand it. And nothing is like the iphones interface or amount of apps, but the N900 is on its way to surpassing it with some updates. yeah the frame rate is 25 and the N97 is 30 and theres some other disadvantages but I def will be getting the N900 mini or whatever they come up with next. Maemo is prettty cool.

Nokia seem to be making a comeback...the N900 is definitely the upgrade from N96/7 with more RAM and a faster CPU...i dont know about the battery life tho...hope its good enough...BP-4L would be btr...my anaemic 7710 had that...lolz ;)

                                        Well honestly speaking i like the phone...Maemo 5,DivX support,qwerty keypad and a good interface alongside a 3.5" screen...nice !! i wish it had an 8mp shooter...

I would also recommend these phones (some of these are midrange offerings that dont compare directly to n900 , but offer good feature-set at tremendous value nonetheless) :

Samsung : i8910HD , Omnia II and other touch phones (Jet)
                                        Sony : W995 , W715/W705 , C901/902 , Satio , Aino
LG : Arena , Viewty Smart
Nokia : The E-Series (if you dont care about audio/camera as much but want speed/performance , design and good build quality) - E72/71 and E55/52 alongside 5730 , 5630 and 5800 XM brethren...if only the S60 5th ed phones had more RAM...

More suggestions will be warmly welcomed...Pls add to the list....
