Nokia 5230 review: Foot soldiers get smarter

12 December 2009
When touchscreen handsets start to take over the lower segments of the market you know the rules of the game have changed. The Nokia 5230 is a smartphone but it doesn’t mind rubbing shoulders with the common run of handsets. So, it’s free...

I can say it is best handset in this price range after using it for 1month.
At first the mobile gets restart automatically,,but problem solved after updating the firmware.
            Wht I like-----
-great display .best for watching movies, song.I m nt using laptop after buying dis fone.downloading movies via internet nd watching on handset
-excellent music quality.u can buy a good earphone at the cost of1000-1200 at any mobile or comuter showroom
-video recording is excellent.vga at 30 frame per second. looks like charm.dis is my primary choice before buying fone.
-internt browsing grows on me .firstly i was dissapointed.bt after few days i feel touchscreen is very friendly, just use ucweb 7 for downading n operamini 5 for browsing

            WHY THIS HANDSET-
-i had 8gb memory card,n95 earphone, microusb datacable before buying dis fone .still camera is nt important for me(camera is decent nt bad as in reviews) ,i use video recording n i hardly use flash.so i choose nokia 5230 over 5800.wifi is nt big deal for me as 3g can found everywhere in india now.
DONT THINK TWICE BEFORE BUYING DIS FONE .BETTER THEN ALL CORBIES, COOKIES.BEST IN DIS PRICE RANGE.

sorry - in reply to a previous comment, the GPS Navigation works completely without the need for internet. I use it in on some very rural roads, far away from Airtel coverage and it works a treat! The only time you'll need an internet connection is when you download the india map in the first place (100mb) via a PC.

This phone is a bargain. I picked mine up in Goa for 8200 INR, downloaded the FREE ovi maps / navigation and now i have a fully functioning GPS Satnav for anywhere in India! Download Opera mobile application, and internet browsing is almost pleasurable (much better than the built in nokia browser).

The only disappointing thing i can say about it is the battery life is not impressive. If i use navigation, or internet continually (which i do every day), one charge will only last 8-10hrs.

Still, for a fully functioning touchscreen smartphone, with completely free GPS/Navigation, you simply can't beat it for the price. Thanks Nokia, i feel like i've robbed you!

Anonymous, 01 Feb 2010Hello readers, Let me write something from the buyers pers... morethank you for the user perspective review on this phone, especially the GPS and navigation features, which are very important to me.
                            I think i'll get one.

I don't know about N5235 and when will it be available in my country - i don't want to wait. I guess the difference probably only in the downloadable music and document viewer.

How do we upgrade N5230 to have the document viewer capability ?

                              Hello readers,
Let me write something from the buyers perspective . I have got both the phones, purchased recently. nokia 5230 for me and 5233 for my girlfriend. First the details
                              Nokia 5230
                              ----------

box contained: charger, manual, stylus, plectrum stylus, 10 song nokia music voucher, battery.

                              Nokia 5233
                              ----------
                              color: black
purchase price: 7100 Indian Rupees (includes tax)
box contained: charger, manual, stylus, plectrum stylus, 10 song nokia music voucher, battery.

                              ----------------------------------------
lets do this thing in questions and answers

                              1. why i bought this phone?

i believe everyone has some expectation from a cellphone and certain features that they want. i wanted GPS(mainly), touchscreen, smartphone, OS where i can install new softwares.Good music quality.

                              2. what about wifi?

i already have an ipod touch 3G and nokia e61i(both has wifi) so wifi was not a priority for me

                              3. why not nokia 5800 expressmusic?

i never had the budget, and moreover, wifi was not required for me, also i had 8gb memory card with me already, also the OS in 5230/5233 is more advanced than 5800

                              4. what was your first reaction?

being an ipod touch user i did not like the looks initially, but as i started using it it felt more hand friendly and the looks grew on me.

                              5. how was the overall interface and speed?

resistive touchscreens needs some more pressure to work with, so i took an hour to come to terms with my 5230 but after that it was a breeze. i am already conversant with nokia symbian interface so it was not a big deal. Overall response was snazzy and there was very little lag. I changed the theme and now it looks nicer. Remember one thing, capacitive screens, though better, but you cant use it without your finger touch. I went to UK and i had to wear gloves, i thanked God that i did not had a phone with capacitive screen, or else i would have to open my gloves to use the phone in -5 degree C

                              6. how was the sound quality?

i never used the provided headphones as they were obviously crap and they were not meant to listen to music with. I used my own soundmagic pl-50 and the sound quality was awesome(just as reviewed). Loudspeaker sound was not too loud but its not a big deal for me as i mostly keep my phone silent with vibrations.

                              7. How was the inbuilt GPS?

i was using plain vanilla nokia maps software and the gps connection was quite good. But to my surprise nokia made its navigation software free !!! and this model is included in their supported phones !!! so its a godsend.

                              8. why bought the black color?

the shopkeeper was using the white one, and though it looked nice, but i could easily make out dust and grimes on it. i believe black color will hide them beter.

                              9. how is the cam quality?

average...pretty average. But 640x480 videos looked nice and beter than all the phones in its class.

                              10. Battery? is it good?

the 1320mAh battery is quite good and with heavy usage u can use it for 2 days(includes navigation, music, vdo rec and conversation)

                              10. Anything you expected but didnt get?

i expected a scratch guard, and a data cable, both of which was not provided. but both can be purchased at a dollar each.

                              11. who should buy this phone?

                              a. whose budget is below 10k INR
                              b. who wants GPS and 3g cheap
                              c. who wants complete free navigation software
                              d. who wants good quality music quality
                              e. who wants a large screen phone(no other phone has this large screen in this price range yet)

                              12. who should not buy this phone?

                              a. whose budget is more than 10k
                              b. who wants wifi
                              c. who has no use for 3G
                              d. who doesn't like touch screens
                              e. whose camera quality is a priority
                              f. who wants a very sleek handset

                              13. what is your fav feature in this phone?

full free nokia navigation, large screen and excellent music quality

                              14. what about 5233?

its the same handset, except the 3G module, which is removed. Otherwise its completely same from every aspects and 1.5k INR less
