Nokia 5230 review: Foot soldiers get smarter

12 December 2009
When touchscreen handsets start to take over the lower segments of the market you know the rules of the game have changed. The Nokia 5230 is a smartphone but it doesn’t mind rubbing shoulders with the common run of handsets. So, it’s free...

I'm really confused... I got this phone (and it is terrific, I love it) and it came with a normal pen-like stylus as well as the wristband plectrum, and the pen like stylus sits in it's own little compartment in the back cover. Also, I got three extra back covers with mine, not two.

Great phone! Highly recommend it!

I am considering buying this phone, being a Nokia fan. But it still seems to be unavailable. Why do nokia announce products months in advance, before they are available. People will lose patience waiting and buy something else !

In a few years time this apparently humble device will be rightly recognised as a ground breaker that brought smartphone technology right to the entry level of the market. A brilliant move by Nokia. It also is a further challenge to dedicated non high end MP3 players given its music focus. It is because of devices like this gaining rapid ground in the market that Symbian will remain with a strong presence.

                  Shorya,
Hey bro, Yes the 2 gb mc comes inside the box I think for Malaysia market. It contains a short data cable, I have to extend it. Both phone color also nice,my is white. It don't have wifi, for me not an issue as I use laptop with mobile broadband.Browsing photo quite slow if your photo above 1Mb I guess. Lot of way to input text, very cool. But the battery seems on the weak site, if you use the GPS, it might last only 4 to 5 hours. Normally it will only last 12 hours with about 1 hour talk time.

Just bought this in Australia. Amazing phone. Fast, affordable, great added options with OVI store and deffinently no need for wifi if you get a internet pack. I've been hunting around for a cheap alternative touch screen phone that works well with as little lag as possible. And i've found it. Look no further, the phone that gives you all your features of internet, music, gps, gaming, apps, bluetooth accessability and more.... IS HERE!

Bought the phone last week, come with 2g (but I upgrade to 8g) memory card, 4 pieces back cover (Original white, red, blue & pink) with Plectrum Stylus and 4 pieces pen stylus which attached to the back cover with matching cover color, wow, excellent.(maybe only for APAC market, may refer to the 5230_APAC_UG.pdf file)
Is really excellent touch screen phone and is cheaper than 5800 about 25 percent and having very sensitive GPS, camera is so so for outdoor but really bad for indoor and no WIFI, but I didn't care as not really use it, for me I still prefer without camera as restricted on most of working environment.

if a company degrades features of a phone to make it cheaper than a previous release...y state it as a disadvantage??? doesnt make n e sense...it's the reason the phone is on the cheap side...i mean...duhhhhh

The phone's quite good but the biggest problem is that the 5800 is barely more expensive than this. In fact, with the 5530 sandwiched in the price bracket, the choice amongst the 3 is pretty clear for most buyers.

On the first page, the phone comparison with the Omnia HD & X10 really highlight the drab design of the phone. Not necessarily a bad thing but gosh Nokia really need a fresh design on their S60v5 phones!
