BlackBerry Curve 8520 review: BlackBerry Lite

22 December 2009
With the Bold almost reaching perfection in the BlackBerry arts, new horizons need to be explored to keep the spark alive. The tall task to pioneer new territories (in BlackBerry terms anyway) falls on to the Curve 8520. The new Curve has a price tag that’s easier on the wallet...

2 megapixel camera with fixed focus? No thanks, not even if it is a BB.

This review was an utter disappointment for me. It is too sarcastic by GSMArena. Being a user of BB8520 and a nokia admirer, i believe that this BB is a gem at heart and truly budget friendly and easy on pocket. it has everything and comparing it too nokia e71 is not justice with BB. i wonder why is this review such an anti BB. it is a great phone and i am loving it for the past three months now and don't plan to change it in the near future.

This review is ANTI 8520. I have one and it works like a gem this review has lowered my respect for gsmarena and although my respect is still high i cant help but think the person(s) is being to critical of the headset. I wondered half way through if the person knew the meaning of budget, and whats so funny is the comparison between this device and the e71, wake up call E71 was design as a premium product and to be challenged so critically by a budget product shows the class of the two companies designers and market people. Now saying this dont be confused i am not saying it's the best BB on the planet but it has to be the best budget mobile of the year. It does, what people who own it, wants to accomplish.

Excellent mobile for the price sold out everywhere almost-something got be working.

This is coming from a nokia lover !!!

The 8520 is a great little phone, and to all those choosing between the Nokia and BB, just Google "No Gateway Reply" if WiFi is important to you.

Sorry - but GSM Arena really disappointed me with this review :(

I think the main issue is that you guys don't understand the Blackberry - something I did not expect. The phone gets bashed left, right and centre for things that really aren't of importance to the Blackberry user. Who cares if this phone has no FM radio or the screen is smaller than the Nokia's of HTC. And if you have one, you WILL get the BIS because that's why you're purchasing it in the first place.

Changing to Blackberry means you're changing the way you look at what is important on a phone. I've seen the 8520 in action and it's an amazing piece of hardware that - contrary to what the review says - has SUCCESSFULLY got RIM into a new market segment.

Or even worse, there are some people that only use it for sms/telephone. Is that tech savvy? I don't think so. Wasting money? Absolutely.

I need a phone for browsing net over wi-fi, sometimes viewing word or pdf files, listening to music, watching some short video clips etc. I do like hardware qwerty keyboard because I text a lot and it seems to me like a great upgrade over standard num pad.
What I do NOT care about is 3g, mails, mms, camera.

So which one should I pick: E63 or BB 8520 (without BES/BIS plan)?

Hi just want to comment about configuring Gmail - I have downloaded Gmail Mail App from Gmail website with my internet Package in Dubai and it sync perfectly fine. Of course the encryption and other features are not there but Gmail App notifies when u have new mail which can be configured in the settings - [GSM Arena Wrote - Business level encryption and syncing options cost, we agree, but a device has questionable value to common users as long as they cannot set up a Gmail inbox without a BIS account.]

had my 8520 a couple of months and love it to pieces, my only comment would be that my case has started to come apart, i work for a mobile retailer and we've also had a couple come back for the same reason so its good but could be better!

When you say that you're a little skeptical whether one handset can convince the masses that BlackBerries are now as much about pleasure as they are about business, then I think I should really comment on this..

In Indonesia big cities shopping malls, it's very common to see kids and teenagers carry two-three mobile phones with them, the standar GSM (usually a Nokia), a CDMA phone (for cheaper airtime), and a Blackberry (for chat and social network). So I believe the majority of BB user here fall to younger generation, simply because they are more tech-savvy than the older.

With the introduction of Curve 8520, RIM surely reads the market and creates a perfect entry level to its product line. Here, it's just like selling sweets, with appealing price tag, option of 12-months installment, BIS daily price plan from the operator, many wouldn't resist the treat, including me. :)

                                      Hello GSM Arena,

Are you sure BB 8520 supports DivX? I was actually surprised because I read a lot of reviews and watch many videos on this phone over the internet, and none of them mentioned it before. If it's true I'm certainly going for 8520 instead of E63 since both are available for the same price in my carrier's offer.
