Nokia N8 review: Director of photography

12 October 2010
We’ve come to take Nokia for granted in the low end or the business class but it seems it has lost the knack for killer phones, run out of royal blood. It’s up to the Nseries to fix it all up. The Nokia N8 may just turn out to be the right cure. With that kind of hardware. Update, 08.02.2012: Symbian Belle update hands-on...

Hey look Alui's infatuation with the N8 continues! ha ha Here he is again spelling out the virtues of other phones while secretly lusting for an N8!

Nice review GSM. It has entrenched my desire to get the N8 ASAP! Bring it on. You see Alui, I am still deciding on which phone to get. I am not desperately trying to convince myself that my choice was the right one! :D

It was clearly spelt out in the review that the likelihood is that some of the biggest negatives on the N8 could easily be resolved with a firmware update, if not via installation of a third party app.

    follower, 13 Oct 2010Oh come on... Android and MeeGo we can talk about, but iOS ... moreI know and I agree with you. I just wanted to tell the quy that comparing S 3 with WP7 does not make S 3 the best OS. For me the top of Os's is like this:
    1. Android (2.2, 2.1);
    2. iOS, but with jailbreak(it has multitasking for few "chosen" apps, the rest are frozen, maybe not such a bad idea).
    3. Bada/Symbian;
    4. Meego, Maemo(good but not enough phones and apps);
    5. WP 6.5;
    ........
    100000000. WP7.

        Alui, 13 Oct 2010@Xis I agree with you. S^3 is better than WP7. But, hello,... moreOh come on... Android and MeeGo we can talk about, but iOS and Bada are missing way too many features.

        iOS for example has terrible multitasking, no widgets, terrible notifications system etc. etc. Speed and simplicity alone do not make a good OS.

              I agree with you. S^3 is better than WP7. But, hello, there are better Os's. Like iOS, Android, Bada, Maemo. Jubilating that S 3 is better than the worse phone OS, is quite funny:). Gosh, I wonder if the WP7 keyboard is as bad as the one on Symbian?

                Nokia N8 (Symbian^3) was impressive. But now when compared to a brand new, high minimum requiring OS ie Windows Phone 7, symbian^3 is not just awesome it's super awesome. Symbian^4 in the pipeline.

On SGS is one touch, the screen stays locked during and after the call. About the hardware: if for you the case is more important than the proccessor, memory, etc, be my guest, but allow me to want something more than a shell from a SMARTphone.
                    Better connectivity? You mean better wifi, blu tooth, usb standards? They are the same.
                    Some ppl look for advice before buying something, so they want to know all oppinions. But at the end it's their decision.

                      [deleted post]I seriously doubt most of the bashers have used Nokia phones. It is just the way some people handle the choices they have made.

                      You can get pretty aggressive responses when you try to argue with people that their particular choice wasn't the best. It is enforced by something called Choice-supportive bias.

                      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choice-supportive_bias

                      I would say the reaction is especially strong with kids who get their first smartphones etc. :)

                        this is a fair review. thanks gsmarena. i have doubt in reading mobile-review's review especially what happen to them with nokia. you can sense by reading their reviews that they are trying to be fair but still come out very one sided unlike this one.

                          @Alui

                          "Let me tell you, I cannot put incoming calls on the speaker with one touch on my X6 is the screen is locked(I use this as a safety feature on all my phones), like you can on SGS"

                          It's one swipe followed by one touch on an X6. Your statement was that it couldn't do it at all.

                          "FYI "hardware" refer to the internal component of a device (processor, RAM, GPU, Screen) not the cover. Look in a dictionary!"

                          Actually the definition of hardware is any piece of an object you can physically touch. This is opposed to software which is intangible.

                          So... err... a case for example.

                          "...and as the review says on video shooting iPhone 4 is better. SGS can shoot HD videos at 30fps. Anyway, camera is not the most essential feature of a phone for me."

                          That's nice. I'm talking about a camera not a video recorder though.

                          "Play whit a phone 4 hours a day and let me know how your neck feels. Mine hearts."

                          Don't really care about that. I'm concerned with how the long the battery lasts with realistic use between charges. Two days of heavy use is better than barely one in this regard.

                          "Yes, but that MORE is not irreplaceable. If N8 had a detachable floppy disk unit, I'm sure the N8 fanboys would have said that is a feature worth to die for."

                          Err... no. The point was the N8 had better connectivity options as is. Which it does.

                          "Maybe I'm a SGS fanboy."

                          I don't think it's a maybe. The point is that most of the people reading this interview are not and don't really care about the SGS. If they did they would be, oh I don't know, reading a review or features about the SGS and not the N8.

                          So you're either trolling or have bought a phone you're not sure about and are trying to justify that by coming up with a lot of stuff that is, frankly, wrong.

                          Either way you've made your choice. Please have the courtesy to let us make ours.

                            I love how people grab the tiniest faults and try to make huge deal out of them. How many have checked that their phone could actually play over 2 gig media files. The android phones I have knowledge of certainly can't.

                            Here is an example of HTC Incredible:

You need a dedicated task killer to clean them up. But once you have that, do not worry, no more lag. I do not know Legend but I expect the SGS to be faster in anything. Just look at specs: WiFi 802.11 n, best CPU and GPU, 512 MB RAM.
