HTC Desire Z review: Desires A-to-Z

12 November 2010
A few months ago, the original Desire was teaching younger Droids the ropes. Though it’s no time to retire just yet, the next generation is ready to take over. And we’re talking no rookie here – the new Desire Z means business with a great QWERTY keyboard...

Desire Z, 28 Nov 2010Fantastic phone but wtf the battery is so bad i gonna cry n... moreI have this phone for 3 weeks now. It seems in the third week, the battery is lasting longer now. The manual that came with the phone did say that after using it for a while the battery will last longer than it does brand new.

I noticed the same thing with my previous phone, the N97. When I first got it, the battery did not last that long. After about a month, it seemed the battery started to last longer.

Stadtionalist, 20 Nov 2010HTC doesn't spend heavy money in the R&D department to ... moreYou think phone manufacturer's make their own camera parts...ha ha ha.
They get them from other companies. HTC just has to get better quality camera parts to be as good as Sony Ericsson, Samsung and Nokia.

Spent half the evening fixing it. I think everything is working now. You get the option of copying all contacts from your old phone onto the Desire Z. Then I did the same from my PC and ended up with multiple copies. What I should have done was not copy contacts from my old phone and just synced with my PC.

          Hey,
I just wanted to know what im is better, gtalk or bbm? I know that you can have a gtalk app on your blackberry, but just want to know the (main) differences and which is the best to use.

Bert, 24 Nov 2010Ok, lil update. The operating systems seems not very op... moreI've had some issues with contacts as well. I've had some weird issue where a contact cannot be added to a group. I also did not get updates from this contact on the Friend Stream app/widget. Then after a few days, it fixed itself. I just noticed yesterday that I had some issue with another contact. I could not add it to the list, but at least his updates appear on Friend Stream.

I'm just wondering if I screwed up syncing my contacts somehow. The Desire Z is able to pull your contacts from your old phone via Bluetooth and also pull it down from your Windows Contacts and then from Facebook and Twitter. I think I did a double download somewhere. The phone allows you to link different contacts from different sources, so your list of contacts has no duplicates, but merges all of the info from the many sources. It is quite useful. I just find that it seems to lag behind in updates for days at times. I unfriended someone and in one list, I still see her there.

              Update2:

Just got an email back from HTC saying:

"As you write in you email the wifi reception is reduced. This is of course because the wifi antenna is placed on the top of the phone."

What can I say to them guys? I mean how stupid can a company be and put the antena on the top of the phone if ppl are putting their hands over it. Thats one of the majour faults as well as the bettary which life expectancy has just reached 1 day for me.

              peeezee

                Ok, lil update.

The operating systems seems not very optemized on this phone, i had a couple messed up things, like not being able to save a contact as it was loading up for ages or crashing once.

However, one of the MAIN disadvantages is if i open the phone and use the keyboard, im holding the phone with two hands. This however makes my wlan reception on the phone go down drasticly, if I take off my left hand, this then is solved and the wlan goes back to full signa, any1 else xperiencing these problems?

raj kande , 23 Nov 2010wat dose it cost ,i want to purchase a new cell so which on... moreThe Desire Z costs $500 CDN without a contract here in Canada.

I was also considering between the E7 and Desire Z. I went with the Desire Z because I got tired of waiting for the E7. I used to own a Nokia N97. I'm glad I chose the Desire Z because I find the internet browsing and social networking experience better than I would expect from the E7. Call quality was not as good as the N97.

What exactly do you plan to use your a new phone for? If you do more internet surfing, the Desire Z is better. If you do more calling the E7 is probably going to be better. I'm not that impressed with the call quality of the Desire Z compared to my old N97.

Got an htc desizre z 2day, and just thought ill leave a lil feedback of the ueser experiance. I loave this phone. If you enjoy chatting on skype, facebook or msn, this is your phone. Fair enough im not too much bothered about the camera, and the soundquality is good with good headphones. Not the htc ones, i think they are kinda shitty.
The whole Z moving systems seems stable, had no problems with the lid falling down what so ever, and it doesnt seem like it will happen. Phone runs smothe, operating system is good. Keyboard is also well built. It feels very good in ya hand, nice and stable. Although its 180g it alright in the pocket, you can feel it, but its not too ennyoig.
Its not as simple as the Iphone4 in terms of operating system, but on android u get more free upps then on iOS, soo u can save urself some money there. Battery life seeeems stable, but i dont think it will last long with wlan turned on. Hope that helps any1. laters

Raj, 13 Nov 2010I came here to say the SAME THING. I dont understand, HTC i... moreHTC doesn't spend heavy money in the R&D department to develop a better camera because they don't care about the camera. And they shouldn't. HTC builds smartphones, always has been and always will. You don't buy an HTC cuz you want a feature phone LOL. And if they WOULD start blowing money on R&D'ing better camera's, we'd end up paying as much as you would for an Apple... Sure it would be better in every aspect, compared to any product of Apple hehehe, but I think HTCs are expensive enough as they are... And THANK GOD for not having a front facing camera, it's just an annoying feature that shows your own face when you hit the wrong button in the camera menu... I prefer to call people while still knowing what the heck I'm doing... If you would go for an HTC if it'd only had a better camera, I'm glad HTC hasn't.

I've got this phone for 3 days now. One is already sent back to HTC, due to a manufacturing mistake. The hinge had no tention whatsoever, which resulted in the screen folding down again as soon as I helt the phone vertical. My new one already froze twice (had to do a battery pull), refuses to rotate automatically (need to slide the phone open), disconnects from the network every 5 minutes amd tried to sent the 5000 txtmessages I pulled from my blackberry to its original senders while it was locked in my pocket (had to do a button reset). If this madness continues, I'm gonna cancel the entire contract. The phone's beautiful on the outside but absolutely retarted on the inside...

Had mine for over a week now and the hinge is fine. The battery needs charging more than my previous phone, but may be due to the fact that I am using it a lot more than my previous phone.
