Motorola DEFY review: Drag and drop

10 December 2010
This is no protocol droid, no phone made for walks in the park. It’s the Motorola DEFY and it isn’t afraid of what comes next. Good. Coming up is one of our reviews. And we’re having the pleasure of the first and only ruggedized Android GSM phone. It’s finally...

I have seen this phone demonstrated at my workplace in Australia. We were pretty impressed with its functionality and claims of amazing durable features. The browser and user interface are great and i would buy this over an iphone any day. Yes Apple make great computers, ipods are fantastic but are failing in their mobile phone make...! Motorola are truly a leader in their own right 60 yrs ago made walky talkys for the War. I am impressed with this phone, i reckon it should do well in all markets as long as its marketed well to highlight its features that are superior to Iphones and even HTC's.

I have some questions about this phone, maybe some owners can help me:
    1. Can Moto Defy be used without SIM card and WiFi access (use only it's GPS and camera for example)? Or will it be useless because Motoblur will ask for registration/sign in?
    2. Can this phone be used for it's GPS and camera without WiFi and GSM signal (no internet connection possible)? Scenario: I reach an area with no GSM signal (there will be no Wifi there I guess :) ) and phone needs a reboot(change battery or whatever); will I be able to start it and see where the hack I am on Mother Earth or is this phone Internet addicted because of Motoblur security?

Oflife, 23 Dec 2010Incorrect on all counts! I have just purchased a DEFY, and ... moreIm sorry but you lost all creditability when you said "ALL the other manufacturers a thing or too" Which is load of crap and everybody knows that. I dare you to post what you just said on the Motorola Support Forums and see if people dont call you crazy.

I think it should be the other way around cause the looks of it, they need it. BADLY!

ts, 22 Dec 2010A phone and a doorhandle ??? what is that about ? motorola ... moreIncorrect on all counts! I have just purchased a DEFY, and it is excellent and could teach ALL the other manufacturers a thing or too. 1) When I went to buy it, the sales guy dropped the original one I was going to buy. It bounced, but was fine. (They gave me another one.) 2) The build quality and display are of far better quality than any other phone, including the iPhone 4 and my other favourite, the HTC Desire. 3) The user interface is very attractive and ingenious, even the RDS Stereo FM radio is a dream to use, with large finger friendly controls. The Android built is fast for the 800Mhz processor and I have yet to experience any slow downs, although I have only owned it a few days, so cannot comment further on that one. 4) And this is the important issue, the call quality and battery life are excellent. Not to mention the ability to turn it into a WiFi hotspot, as I did today, surfing the web on a MacBook Air at HSDPA speeds, I could even watch high quality YouTube videos on the MacBook via the DEFY.

I actually think this is the best sub £400 Android handset out there, because it does so much so well for the price - with NONE of the flaws inherent in most other handsets, from dropped calls to missing features.
The ONLY thing it needs is Froyo for 720P video recording and slightly more colourful camera images. Moto? Let's do it!

Motorola invented the mobile phone and have consistently innovated, and the DEFY is not only innovative, but a great wireless device too.

It is about time all Android phones looked at Motorola Defy to see you do not have to build a phone to look like a brick to be waterproof, dust proof and shock proof!!

The phone looks slim and with a nice looking screen with Android 2.1 (would be better if Motorala would hurry up with Froyo??) however even though Motorola website states the Motorola Defy is only water resistant have a look at this video which shows the phone being answered and playing music underwater and dropped numerous times on all sorts of hard surface and the there is not a scratch and the phone works perfectly! Well done Motorola

All the manufacturers should copy because we should never have to ever again have to replace a phone due to damage from an occasional drop or picking up the phone with wet hands or being caught in the rain.....

Anonymous, 21 Dec 2010ts ... can you distinguish a phone from a doorhandle ?A phone and a doorhandle ??? what is that about ? motorola are a dead manufacturor who peaked with the razr and are trying desperatly to cling on as they get swept away. Who releases a 'rugged' smart phone that has a substantial earpeice fault ??? obviously motorola believed that the phone needed to be shock resistant and waterproof so it wouldnt break when all the angry moto users threw it on the floor.if you want a smart phone go for one that actually does the job like HTC or The Samsung Galaxy range, and if you want a rugged durable phone then buy a sonim !! its like motorola have thrown together a phone in the hope that its supposed durability will appeal to the masses and distract from the myriad of glitches and faults with their shoddy, poorly constructed hardware

Not sure why this reviewer states that Motorola haven't planned a 2.2 release, they clearly have. 2.2 will be coming for the Defy in Q1 or Q2 2011, depending on region:

I am the regular reader of gsmarena's review, It looks like that Gsmarena some how just wanted to finished their job. Hope they will re review such a wonderful model and give us little bit more about speed and battery performance. Benchmark test shows Defy is better than many high end model like Xperia x10i and Samsung Galaxy s.
Many people says that its a mid range phone but its performance is for better even in some case better than high end phones.
Gsmarena...I know your favorite is X10i. But honestly tell us which one is better? Just for your info...my phone is N97mini.

this is the worst phone on the market right now whoever thinks that this is a phone worth buying should be shot. you clearly have a serious lack of knowledge about phones if you would buy or consider buying this handset, shame on you!

It is a shame that a site as GSM Arena is putting a positive review of this phone without warning of the fact that a large proportion of the DEFY have a faulty earpiece that stops working after just a few days. It is obviously an even bigger shame that Motorola keeps on pushing this devices without a clear communication about the issue and how it will be fixed. It is clear that they try to sell whatever they can until Christmas and will come with the apologies afterward. If you have Motorola shares sell them now!
