Motorola DEFY review: Drag and drop

10 December 2010
This is no protocol droid, no phone made for walks in the park. It’s the Motorola DEFY and it isn’t afraid of what comes next. Good. Coming up is one of our reviews. And we’re having the pleasure of the first and only ruggedized Android GSM phone. It’s finally...

Motorola trying to keep quiet about broken speakers. 2-3 weeks they have known about it and no statement. Don't buy.

Overall, a good review. No power consumption tests is a VERY BAD move though, considering that DEFY is at the very least an «outdoors» phone. Please Check if this «rugged» cutie can last for a day in places where reception is poor — take it to the forest hunt or a mountain ride :)
Moreover, I wonder why GSM Arena is so hush-hush on the notorious DEFY speaker earpiece problem (Moto initially went cheap on the speaker part — just like Nokia did with Nokia 5800 — and the earpiece gets fried within weeks on many units from first batches).

And FYI, DEFY IS planned to be upgraded to Android 2.2 in Q2 2011 (in Europe, that is)

I just bought it from Pixmania.com 309€ , my 1st android , getting form N97 mini 2 Motorola Defy . I loved Nokia until screwed me with the N97 mini, like all the fones very laggy i might say, i fone expensive one with gps and....thats all , even my E61i with external GPS is connecting way faster then the N97, searching through contacts 1 minute, apps and games the most childish ever, at least the DEFY has Gorilla glass, dustproof and water-resistant, 800mhz Cpu and from the Moto intern stuff it has separate GPU PowerVR SGX530 just like the ti omap 3620. Drop it and still working Nokia's style, but ditched the symbian , no moatter the versions 1, 3 or maybe 4 ...Still behind the Nokia , maybe the bear will wake up from his sleep and do wonderfull fones like in the good days......

Flash 10.1, screenshots, better copy-paste, faster overall.

Anonymous, 11 Dec 2010bad review....the defy has a omap 3630 with an PowerVR SGX5... moreI think the benchmark results are not accurate. My Froyo SGS gets 55.5fps on Neocore and around 1500 in Qadrant benchmarks.

I found the review odd to say at least. Who really cares about DivX ? If you rip DVDs you encode them in MP4/H.264 anyway (did I mention that youtube is using H.264 as well ?). Anyway, the DEFY happily does 854x480 coded H.264 clips. What I find really funny is that even with 640x360 coding the videos are just good enough, meaning I cannot really tell the difference. I suppose 720p is a real issue then ... or wait, why would you want to play 720p on a 480p device ?

The other thing that I don't quite understand is the Eclair vs. Froyo vs. Gingerbreak vs. LatestAndGreatest discussion. Does the DEFY do it's job with Eclair, or not ? Would it do the job significantly better with Froyo ? Is there any significan application out there where Eclair vs. Froyo would be a dealbreaker ? Honestly, I'd rather have a stable Eclair than a buggy Froyo base.

Just to add, regarding people asking about the battery life. It seems to me to be only moderately better than the HTC Desire. The battery will drain pretty quickly listening to music, surfing the web etc. It will need a nightly charge.

Really happy with the Defy, not had any problems at all! Gorgeous screen, it's fast, runs 3d games perfectly, great sound (both speaker and headphones), very tough, looks cool.

I can't quite work out why it gets touted as a mid-range phone however, it benchmarks higher than the Galaxy S. The phone is a beast.

Good for you. gsmarena are obviously not up to your standard. Well, they're known for making mistakes. But you know, you said it there. It's an iDEN-based Android phone. Your comment would've made so much more sense if this establishment was called walkie-talkie arena.

I used to love this site, and really gave it a lot of credit when deciding on new phones and stuff. What happened to you GSMarena??? You lost your credibility.... This review sucks !!! GSMarena "This is first durable android phone"
The Motorola i1 is the first iDEN-based Android phone. It's a rugged smartphone which solid dependability meets Military specifications for protection against dust, shock, vibration and blowing rain. Features include a 5-megapixel camera, Push To Talk, WiFi, Android OS, microSD expansion slot and so on.

For somebody who does this for living you should have known better. Over and out.

bad review....the defy has a omap 3630 with an PowerVR SGX530 gpu (the same cpu as in the milestone 2, but in the defy the clockrate is 800mhz),and motorola already comfirmed that 2.2 is comming Q1 2011. If you look at the benchmakrs of this phone you will see that it is faster then the galaxy s http://www.androidworld.it/2010/10/27/test-e-benchmark-del-motorola-defy-26035/.

                                wheres the battery life info?
ill tell people that, with moderate usage u can get 3 days

and why didnt you mention the speaker problems, that are appearing all over the world?
why didnt you prevent people from buying this phone
wait 2 months and there will be fixed defys and cheaper
