Nokia Asha 311 review: A penny saved

14 September 2012
Nokia is still picking up pace in the smartphone market, with the Microsoft-driven Lumias yet to make the impact the Finns have been hoping for since the strategy reset. In the meantime, the company has been enjoying a pretty easy run in the...

this phone has excellent phone functionallity... nice UI with basic hardware like high end phones.. such as gorilla glass (you rarely see at phone range), 1ghz processor, OTG,wifi b/g/n, 32gbmicro sd support, fm radio, hsdpa 14.4mbps...i choose this phone over an android phone simple because the s40 UI approach is very user friendly...it has a very elegant look..you must see it and compare with the same range.. the glass is scratch resistance which is highly appreciated as by time..

kumar, 15 Sep 2012this is not a true smart phone coz adobe flash and html5 is... moreThis isn't a good phone thats why its selling like hot cakes and nokia is enjoying its success :)
Remember this is not a phone for those who can afford better than this but its a phone phone for those who can't buy high end phones. Everything has its limit and you can't ask for more which has already been added on it. Consumers are lucky that they are getting all there features at such a low price and it is a reliable phone not like android.

The Gorilla glass and a 1Ghz processor is just added for dumb customers who take a fleeting look at the specs and don't to any background research.
Neither the OS is capable of utilizing the 1ghz processor( believe me , i have seen what those free EA games looks like , they look like they are made in the last century).

Nor can any part of this flimsy phone survive a fall except the screen.

People , don't be miserly. Put some extra money and buy a smartphone of your choice(anything,i m not a fanboy , but i feel a smartphone is a must these days for anyone below 70 yrs) instead of this piece of c***. You wont regret it.

                    Sir, very nice review.

I bought one 311 and I must say that the experience is far superior than androids in the same price range.

Only problem I have is that it does not open email attachments, no internal document reader, and seems not to support external word/pdf document readers.

Can you suggest a solution please? Thanks.

AnonD-63818, 15 Sep 2012Yes you can, but not your mom. Many people -especially the ... moremost people keep in contact with their parents/family..so i would know when my mom/dad needs a new phone.
So i wouldn't let them spennd...no wait...trow away money on a phone like this..touch screen, camera, etc ..that only mimics a smartphone.
For the same price i can get them a proper phone that is extremely better equipped ..a proper phone. and if they only chose to use if for call and text that's ok....it still has all the smartphone features in case they need it..maybe learn to use it with time..it's not like it's rocket science. and there's no comparing the speed and flexibility and awesome exmor r camera on an xperia arc..this nokia doen't even have a camera flash.
so my mom tries to take a photo and guess what ..turns out all black and yo ucant make anything out in it...then the experia with its exmor r takes better low light pics even without the flash, power up the flash and you get perfect pics(for consumers).

Waste of money for the buyer and a waste of resources for Nokia.

[deleted post]In MY country. The Asha 3xx series is in really direct competition with Galaxy Y and L3. The term "smartphone" now would include capability of upgrading to newer version of the softwares. Which is, Asha series (and almost all Nokia Phones, except WP Lumia) are not capable.

Nokia used to do always well in audio...
PS. Please GSMARENA, if you read this, do the audio tests to Portable Media Players, no site does it...

[deleted post]here, in my country, for the same price, you can get smartphone with better specs than this S40 phone.
and it's not just Android phones, you can get brand new WinMo 6.5 powered phones and Symbian phones too.

so, if Nokia really wants to do business, they should made cheap entry-level smartphone like everyone else, not this S40 phone.
because there's almost no place for this full-touchscreen non-smartphone in the entry-level market...

I've got my unlock asha 311 for only $110 contract free here in the Philippines..
so far the phone is worth more than the price.. an excellent companion of my sgs3 for its reliable phone functionality.

[deleted post]Unfortunately, GSM Arena is based in the UK with only a few correspondence in the US and Canada. They likly don't know (or care for that matter) than most low end devices in the United States are sold as prepaid phones, almost exclusively. The only Authorized Dealers of phones unlocked and not carrier branded was the Sony Style stores, which have been disappearing. F

Many people -especially the older ones- use phone only for calling and texting. They don't want the complexity of smartphones. Thats why these kind of phones are exist.
