Nokia Lumia 820 review: Backup squad

22 November 2012
Back up against the wall, Nokia looks to the launch of the first Windows Phone 8 smartphones as a make or break moment. It’s not essential for the Lumia 820 and Lumia 920 to become bestsellers, but it’s absolutely vital that they convince users of Microsoft’s mobile platform's potential...

Anonymous, 23 Nov 2012This is truly the bezel-phone, but actually thats not bad. ... moreIncorrect analysis... have you heard about living tiles... which means, refreshing updates in most of the required icons, when the screen is alive?! Unlike the static icons of Android ?! This something where threads are running...and is a tax for the battery juice. Even still then... it is power efficient because, it lasts 2 days ( nearly)...And the way threads for the background execution by volume is different for Android and WP. By the way... how much would an Android phone last with a 1650 mAH battery with the same screen size...probably with your incorrect maths...the answer would be 120 hours?!

I'm having trouble understanding some of the below comments about how Android is laggy... have you people used Android on the most recent phones or are you just talking trash just because you wish to defend Nokia?

I'm neutral to all phones but I just recently grabbed the LG Optimus G and let me tell you, this phone at WORST lags *slightly* when I have multiple (as in 7 or 8) windows open. Otherwise, its smooth as butter, and to consider here its still on ICS, I'm using 6 pages full of widgets, push, live wallpapers etc. Its fast, responsive and fluid.

Before you start bashing how Android is slow and laggy maybe you should try it out on newer phones first.. saying this stuff doesn't convince those who know first hand it only makes your comments read like you don't know what you're talking about.

That said, I have not used WP OS mostly because I dislike the metro UI intently.. I'm not about to call it slow, laggy and crappy though as I simply dont know that to be true unless I try it now do I?

This is truly the bezel-phone, but actually thats not bad. Because its really horrible. Its way too big for its screen size, and still they only managed to put a 1650mah battery?

Im also surprised of its battery performance per mAh, take those 40 hours and divide by 1650 and then multiply it by 3100 (which is the battery capacity of Note II) and you get that the 820 would last 75 hours on a 3100 mah battery. That would be nice then? Well, the problem is that the Note II is rated at 72 hours, meaning that despite this small low res display and modern dual core it consumes almost as much power as the gigantic 5.5 inch quadcore.

Where is WP8's socalled superior efficiency then? Its coming in WP9?

You don't need much processing power to display a pair of rectangles filled with one color. Actually, powerful Atari 800XL or ZX Spectrum systems could handle this kind of modern ui even better and with smoother animation.

Even that, modern ui is strongly based on secret UX antipatterns book, which Ballmer bought on sale-out, thinking he made great deal.

                Poor Microsoft.

In the UK no compatibility with BBC iplayer is a pretty big omission.

Also can you at last have different volume levels for the ringer and music? (My L800 it is ludicrously the same).

                            **Good news for Nokia lovers**

"Yahoo China mentioned nonchalantly in a report about the launch of the Lumia 920 in China, that Nokia has so far received 2.5 million orders for the device, which is a pretty big number for a handset that's been out for just a couple of weeks.

They say that the device is being sold out in places like Germany, Australia, even the US, and if Amazon's "out of stock" sign for the cyan and yellow version is any indication, they might be correct.
Long before this report, Wall Street wise guys like Goldman Sachs have apparently been backing up the truck in the last few days to load on Nokia's beaten shares, sending the stock price soaring more than 30% "

Its too early to compare it with Android. I've been android user for last 2 years. Now i want a change. So either it'll be iPhone or Lumia will be my next phone.

                                        2. almost nobody has dln tvs..also you cant mirror the screen. thanks god for google's miracast on the nexus 4 ..it's wireless and mirrores the screen. nokia doesn't have it. nokia is always late to the party.
                                        3. adreno 225 is antique..low end experia mini and neo l and arc and arc s have it..like 2 years back.
                                        4. amoled is for blind people. the color saturation helps theyr blind eyes sort of...other than that there's no definition to it.
                                        5. gyroscope is for 3d aware apps. you wont understand with your antieuq wp os.
                                        6. ''As if everyone should just stick'' no, al least they have a choice. on wp ther's no choice.
                                        7. who copied who ? wp copied lego blocks. lol. android is the nost inovative os in years. even apple copied stuff from it. and nokia cant even coy properly. so it will always be left behind.
