Samsung Galaxy S4 vs. HTC One: Army of two

26 March 2013
Two phones carrying such a weight of expectations that one would think they’d have no time and energy to worry about each other. The Samsung Galaxy S4 has to outsell the S III and the HTC One is...

I haven't got that One yet, HTC people here said it will be delayed til end of April or early May, gosh I can't wait. Overall, just like I said, GS4, Xperia Z and One are not perfect phones, and I will going to One despite many Indonesian will go for GS4 most likely :)

I own a S3 and I find the smart dial feature to be pretty annoying compared to the One X. It isn't just very smart. It's actually complicated to use, it also displays one contact at the time and you have to tap to open a list. Also refuses to detect a last name after you wrote the name. I've always like how on the One X it displays many contacts, it's so much easier to use.

It's amazing how many people on here have agendas and need to 'prove' that their choice is the best for everyone.
Well, I have no agenda, I just want the phone that is the best compromise for me (there is no perfect phone!)
I was an iphone user when they re-defined mobile phones and were clearly the best.
But after a few years when Andriod phones caught up I left Apple's annoying walled garden because, despite Apple insisting otherwise, yes I did want Flash and yes I did want a larger screen and the ability to send files to my friends.
So I had a Galaxy S2 and then an S3. And I must admit that I did 'convert' alot of friends to Android, just because I felt Apple were controling everything just to get even more money out of the masses that blindly followed them.
And now I'm going to upgrade again and it's going to be the One or an S4.
There are lots of 'nice to have' features like Zoe and higher quality stereo speakers on the One or multi-window, removeable battery and SD card on the S4 (but personally I've never needed an extra battery or used more than 32Gb of storage on my S2 or S3)
But for me the is only 1 'killer' feature of each phone that the other cannot compete with - everything else both phones do very well anyway.
For the S4 it has to be stills camera quailty - it obviously captures far more detail than the One.
But if I want to photograph something important, like when I go on Holiday to Thailand, I will take my Bridge camera which takes far better quality pics than either phone and has a 30X zoom. And it cost a quarter of the price of either phone at £130. For impromptu snaps and uploading to Facebook etc, the One is plenty good enough.
However, I can do nothing about the fact that, compared the the One, the S4 looks like a cheap, plastic toy. So my best compromise is the One.
I'm sure that the S4 will outsell the One, because many people blindly follow hype or friends etc. (why else does the iPhone continue to sell so well?) But I think that HTC will take a big enough bite out of Samsung's sales to make them wake up and realise that people do want quality materials and appearance too.

HTC....... Premium look, good performances. And Li-Po battery is awesome.
Btw, I got different results with HTCs low light camera quality... It's impossibly clear and higher quality than One X and S3. Zoom quality is way much better than any Samsung devices. I would never buy plastic Korean low class toy phones like Samsung.

                        HTC ONE means ONE-LIFE Only!

                        http://www.technobloom.com/htc-one-is-the-most-irreparable-smartphone-in-ifixit-history/2225296/

1 - "It looks like you can’t count on this device when it breaks. It is just built to have One life. Several markings in the device may indicate that people from HTC never expected anyone to be able to open the device. Once it breaks inside, your options are extremely limited. If you do plan to get the HTC One, make sure you have insurance on this thing. External durability is marred by internal vulnerability in this device."

2 - "The only choice you have with internal damage is to buy a new device or send it in to HTC and see if they will even bother trying to repair it."

3 - "The first thing discovered by the iFixit team is it is virtually impossible to remove any component without damaging the case and plastic bands. From that end, it may mean that any internal damage or malfunction will need a full phone replacement, or a few months in the disassembly, repair and reassembly line. The thing is, no shop repairman will be able to fix or replace any parts for you."

AnonD-75288, 28 Mar 2013Well I hate to burst the HTC One's bubble, but the fact is,... moreYou just only need to know that for people like me, I prefer a smartphone that, has score 9 in performance and score 9 in design and built material, instead of a smartphone that score 10 in performance but only score 7 in design and built material. I wont say HTC will over sales Samsung, but certainly this One will get a significant sales from people like me. That is why, the perfect phone is design, built material and UI like HTC One, performed by hardware, software and features like GS4, and then get IP57 and camera like Xperia Z. If such a phone exist, there will be no debate here...

frankly iam a nokia fan anyday, but if i will have a choice to buy an android i will go for either htc or sony, samsung for me is like a chinese clone and luks cheap who soever holds it.....frm s3,s4 to note 2.... Yup htc is a big rival for nokia now in the camera department but i wud luv to see more compegition frm both htc and sony instead of a cheap plastic clone stealing everything from everybdy and marketing as their own......its the death of innovation.
!....so htc design rocks for me its new , whereas s4 is just an upgraded version of note2.... No difference in quality, tech etc,,, no need for octacore i use a phone nt a half baked tab
                              .....

Shouldn't the resolution comparison be explained in the context of megapixel v ultrapixel?

GSMArena shouldn't just declare the Samsung's as being better than the HTC's without highlighting the context within which the HTC has the 4 ultrapixel camera.

Cant the narrow field of view on Galaxy s4 be widened using 3rd party software? Or Will samsung release update for it?

I'm interested that there is no comparison of actual phone functionality, as they are actually phones. Things like reception and call quality for both handset an speakerphone should be included.
