Nokia Lumia 1020 hands-on: First look

11 July 2013
The Nokia Lumia 1020 makes them all proud - it has the big sensor (even if, at 1/1.5", it's slightly smaller than the one inside the 808 PureView) the OIS and a proper flash. Update: hands-on and camera UI...

The placement of the stereo mics doesn't make much sense to me unless the video's supposed to be recorded in portrait (eek) format.

I'm glad they didn't include the N80 in that retrospective 'trip down memory lane' shot. Quite probably the worst phone I've owned.

Biggest BSI sensor in a consumer product is found in the Sony RX100 II (1 full inch).
But it's impressively big for a smartphone.
How fast a lens is, is not a fair comparisson, since the smaller sensor makes it cheaper and easier to produce faster lens (it's not a set value, it's in relation to the sensor), and the result is also in relation to the size of the sensor.
Sure it's an impressive camera, but I wonder, if they should have dared to go back a few snaps for bigger pixels... I wish we could get RAW pictures from it, to see what the actual resolution is, but probably quite e bit less than 38megapixels, when you factor in optics and noise from the small pixels, and those extra pixels would probably been used better as larger pixels than higher resolution. However, it is still an impressive camera for a mobile, and will likely beat all the rest, even when the honami is out.

AnonD-152638, 11 Jul 2013SO pretty much what you look for in a camera, is left only ... moreIt's a mobile nobody wants. Ppl might like the camera but the price done not justify buying it. If Nokia would sell it as media player(without the smartphone part) or as a pure camera for 2-300$ even I would buy one.

The bookeh is a function of F (aperture), the smaller the F, the narrower the dept of field, the more pronounced bookeh outside of he DOF. The RX 100 has the minimum f of 1.8 while the 1020 has 2.2, less than the 920 family.

The RX100, although a great compact does not deliver that much bokeh... There are others with slighly more bokeh for portraits (when zoomed), but those are not as good in low light situations.

This is a mobile for the DSLR owner who wants as good imaging as one can get when the camera is at home and the Mobile is all you got.
Or for the consumer that wants better camera performance out of the mobile instead of having to get a compact or DSLR as well.

This is a mobile at first, you have to remember that.

N95 had two processors, clocked at 332 Mhz.
The iPhone 1st gen had a single clocked at 412.

But sure, it is powerfull for it's age.

The problem now is that there are more graphic intensive games for mobiles, so there is use for powerfull hardware.
But if you are not a hardcore gamer, this device will be fine. And thanks to its 720p display instead of 1080p, it does not require as much power for the same level of graphics.
