These days you would need to customize ROM with LineageOS S5 to have it running smoothly again. With LineageOS ROM i would have never said that this phone is almost 7 years old android. Its still running smoothly. I definetly recommend you to pull it out of drawer as a spare phone.

I bought my Samsung Galaxy S5 in June 2014,to me it was the best choice for a mobile, I was a Nokia fan and in 2014 I took a gamble, new nothing about Android, but I am glad that I did, my S5 is still in great condition, it still has the original screen protector on it, last year I decided to update because most of my apps didn't work anymore on Android 6,I have been reading through the xda forum and I would like to try and install Lineage OS on it, my question is, I have no experience with custom roms and I was wondering if a person with no experience could try and install the rom,I loved my S5 and if I could get it done I would be able to enjoy my awesome S5 for a bit longer, one more thing, which is the best rom? Where everything works.

Is very good to use as a frying pan or hand warmer it gets extreme hot and with a new battery it lasts 40 minutes this phone sucks I hate qualcomm

Is it ok to put a 5600mah mugen battery to s5?

Bought this phone new in May of 2014 and have had no problems except I had to replace the battery which cost about $10. Put it in a Tech21 case with a screen protector and it has survived many drops on various surfaces with no damage. It has been a amazing phone and I have been very happy with it.

I have two klte's (900V) both rooted and running AOSiP 9.0 or Q. Works better than ever IMO. I custom compiled MultiRom and usually just use Q (Paranoid Quartz is another option). I do suggest compiling via source for fine tuning components and whatnot

I have the Korean version(g900k), and it has the place to charge independently, so I can remove the exhausted battery when I enter the battery, yaps I feel my s5 battery can't run out

I have 2 of these now. The first I bought new whose lcd screen died after a year..which was replaced under warranty. Just over a year later the charge port died, bought a good quality used one.. that charge port died shortly after too.. I was able to fix it using contact cleaner spray.. however 4 months later it has died again.

Charge flex is $2part.. but involves removing the entire screen to fix.. :/

the best phone ever. it can handle 20 apps in a row and it doesn't freeze while you use it. love it

It's 2020 and (in my opinion) there hasn't been any new smartphone with equal or better specifications.

                                      1. This old device has a full HD OLED display whilst most new phones have an LCD, which has worse color rendering and lower efficiency.
                                      2. Contrary to nearly all new phones, the S5 has a removable battery and double capacity batteries 5600mAh can be found online.
                                      3. Even in 2020 not many phones support the 802.11ac WiFi standard. The S5 does.
                                      4. It has an IR transmitter. Cable technicians will love this.
                                      5. There's still a 3,5mm TRRS jack for audio

Ofcourse, the Galaxy S5 also has its downsides.
The USB/MHL connector wears out, and the cover breaks off quickly.
The original battery doesn't last a day anymore.
The internal memory is too small, with apps nowadays taking up hundreds of megabytes.

That said, thanks to LineageOS i've been able to upgrade to Android 9.
Partly thanks to a good screenprotector my S5 has survived tens of drops onto tile and concrete.

In conclusion, in 2020 this phone is becoming a bit slow and outdated, but having been a flagship device it has stood the test of time and surely will be a good choice for years to come.

I agree with above: Bought mine 2nd hand 5 years ago and it's still adequate for my needs. The downsides include large space taken up by unneeded apps that are not uninstallable, and incompatability with some apps with the current operating system.
