After reading Freefaller post I think you should try restarting the phone with no SD card in it. And see if you at least get a plug & play response when connected to the pc. Don't worry about correct drivers yet. Work on getting some kind of response from the pc.
I have a 64bit Vista system. So the OS can't be the problem.
There are cards that have android compatible on the packaging. Get one like that if you do get a connection without a card.

I've Googled 'samsung s3 mtp failed' and come up with a lot of people suffering with the same problem as Kofi Knight.
Quite a few are saying that the problem lies with older SD cards that can't be recognised with Microsofts new MTP software, and the answer is a newer SD card (class 10); which is why I suggested removing it and rebooting the s3 without one.
Others claim that the problem lies with x64 bit Windows not able to recognise MTP phones.
Most cases seem to be a problem with the Media Transfer Protocol, so I'm not sure what the solution is.

Even if he doesn't have the drivers and everything is ok with the phone, data cable & and usb port on the pc. Should the phone detect usb pc connect and show the usb fork logo in the notification area. Drivers or not?
And should plug & play on the pc kick in on the pc when the phone is connect with no or wrong drivers?
According to him nothing happens it only changes.
I was thinking he is using a charging only cable with less pins but he said he tried more than one cable. Or the output on the port is too low. But he claims it is Usb2 and he tried more than 1 pc.

When you connect your S3 to a PC you should get a notification 'Connected as a media device', and a USB icon in your notification bar. If you don't then you do not have the drivers installed to recognise it.
First download the correct drivers for your OS (I have listed the links before).
On your PC, press Start button and choose Control Panel in the right hand pane. From that, Choose Programs/Uninstall a program. From the list, choose 'Samsung USB Driver for Mobile Phones' and uninstall.
Now install the USB drivers you downloaded, reboot your PC, and see if the PC recognises your phone.

Kofi knight, 25 Nov 2012nothing at all...its only charges the battery1. You have tried multiple data cables.
2. You have tried multiple pc's with Usb2 ports. (Not 1.1 or 3)
3. You never it try to install drivers or show the usb logo on the task bar on the phone.
So Aaron far as the phone thinks, it's on a wall outlet not a pc.
All that is left to do is a factory reset from the bootloader screen. If that doesn't make it work. Take it back. You have a defective unit.

one thing i always i've heard of same complain.. s3 is easily breakable when dropped .. hope s4 has metal chassis to protect the screen and internals.. im disapointed..

Now that I have time here is why I said you need to undo the over clocking crap you did...
I gave that reason because it was the common sense answer (never over clocked my SIII) as I know about over clocking on PC’s back in PII days and think that the same rules may apply to smart phones. I have only over clocked a HTC HD in the attempt to get a ported HTC HD2 ROM to run smoother and the results were very unstable.
If after reading this post if my reasons are incorrect, you just say, and tell me why, so I can learn something from you.
On a PC your system is only as fast as your slowest component and from the introduction of windows vista Microsoft confirmed this with the introduction of the point rating system, which gives your system a rating based on the points of your slowest piece of hardware between CPU, RAM, GPU and storage.
Whichever of these 4 were the slowest; upgrading it would give you a better point rating.
Eg.
Hard drive is your weakest link, get one with shorter seek times.
GPU is your weakest link, get dedicated card with lots of independent RAM
RAM weakest link put in more and see if you could get a set with faster BUS that works.
CPU weakest link get a faster one or if the motherboard would not allow that over clock the one you have.
OVERCLOCKING
After a CPU is tested by the manufacturer to find its full potential it is stepped down and marketed at the lower setting for stability and operating temperature reasons.
So in most cases the buyer can over clock it (within reason to get a little more juice out of it)
When you overclock the CPU a few things are affected.
Operating temperature goes up which can make it unstable. This could be combated by going from fan cooling to liquid cooling.
Data is requested from RAM faster which increases its work load. This is not a problem if the RAM load was say 20% and it went up to 50%. but if it was running at a Load of 80% and overclocking the CPU carried the load up to 90-100% it’s time to get more/faster RAM because now your RAM is the weakest link and you will not benefit from the extra over clocking power.
Demands on the hard drive also go up by the RAM needing to supply data faster to the CPU.
BACK TO THE PHONE.
If You overclocked the CPU to the Max... logic tells me the operating temperature and electrical power demands are going to go up. How are you going to add extra cooling to a phone to keep the CPU stable? (Not to mention faster drain of the battery.)
If You overclocked the CPU to the max... now there are even more demands on the RAM to supply data faster to the CPU. You can’t change RAM in a phone, and this phone is already taxing the 1gb of RAM it has. So tell me how the demands for faster data transmittal are going to be met?
Most time I have 6-8 tabs open at the same time on the web browser. Because I really turn my phone off and I frequent certain pages over and over (lick this one) and not one of my taps close on me. This is me using my phone in power saving mode and no overclocking.
You have overclocked and can’t get 5 tabs to stay open.
You yourself admitted that the problem is the 1gb for RAM (the ram is the weakest link on this model SIII) so I’m thinking increasing the speed of the CPU will not improve RAM performance and by extension overall phone stability.
So to recap. I need 6-8 tabs in browser and get that with the CPU restricted in power saving mode, no problem. You need more tabs than that and can’t even get 5 to stay open with an over clocked CPU.
Hmmmm? Now i ask you again what was the point of you overclocking the CPU when the RAM is the weak link?

The SIII just get a job done.
I don’t believe the jump in tec from a SIII to a SIV will be worth then money I would have to pay to do that. And there is where you went wrong going from a SII to a SIII. I went from an old HTC HD2 to a SIII so I see my money’s worth.
And I sill have to use the HD2 for Garmin. So my next phone may not even be Android, if Android don’t get Garmin.
Now I see you talking about going from SIII to NoteII, that is yet again a small incremental jump. Within the same OS & UI
BTW. We are in the same region and I changed my provider ROM to the factory unlocked ROM for my region, so we could have the same Baseband kernel and buildnumber for all I/you know.
(Done in kingsoft office and copy/past here. With taps in desktop mode on phone)

I know this isn't the right place to post this, but here goes.
My daughter is Apple mad. She owns a Imac, Macbook Air, and an iPod 7th Gen.
I bought her an iPhone 5 for her birthday on 11/11/2012. Now, she puts it on charge at night, and in the morning the battery shows a quarter full. The battery is dead already, 6 weeks on. I will have to take it back to the Apple store.
Why am I posting this? Because I am lucky that I have a phone that I can take the back cover off of and replace the battery.
