Your are right Reno. Unfortunately, the MMF format has a less sound quality than the MP3. Also the volume output from MMF is less as well. But it is still better than having no custom ringtones.
Is there a place I can download quality ringtones similar to those that came with the phone? I guess they are in MMF format?

Hey all!! To everyone with problems on their 903... I recomend having your phone flashed into EURO, it is by far the best and is 100% bug free and nothing is locked like mp3 or anything. It is very easy to do and takes about 2-3 hours on the USB Smart kit. However you do need to watch it as sometimes it might come accross an error or needs it's next flash file (8 Invloved). and the phone MUST be fully charged. Good luck all; and MERRY CHRISTIMAS!!!! Hope all of ya got 903's under your tree's as prezzies!!!!!

Congratulations Barry. Actually SMAF came to my mind but I shrugged it off as the sound is not too good as the MP3s. I never knew you could do those things but it's worth it for those like you who had probs. You did very well and we are happy for you. you can move on to more exciting features of 903 like video playback.

              Hi Reno...and everyone,
Although my 903 phone is installed with the Chinese firmware (SX833) which doesn't support mp3 or AAC as ringtone file, I am now able to make it work...here is what I did:
              1. Convert mp3 file to wav file using freeware such as “Switch” came with “Express Rip”.
              2. Edit the wav file by reducing it in size (~500 kb) using freeware such as “WavePad”.
              3. Open the “Wav to SMAF converter” freeware obtained from “http://smaf-yamaha.com/tools/downloads.html”. Drag the saved wav file to the converter and save it as MMF file.
              4. Move this MMF to the internal memory of your phone for ringtone assignment.
              It works!!
Special thanks to Reno who help me through the struggling!

                Hi Osin,
Thanks for the tip. Moving the mp3 file to the phone memory will not work for me. My phone has the Chinese version SX833 firmware which doesn't support mp3 ringtones.

I have borrowed a friends phone and it's nothing special belive me. it physically huge, screen is blurrier and less res than by $200 Panasonic, operation is slow, Camera is as good as any 3.2 MP but takes AGES to save images due to the slow firmware.

the phones archillies heel is the 5
MB of memory on the handset and memcard suppport is HORRID. even transferring a file over I/R make the phone "unavailable for calls". WHY!!

For the price, NZ$1399 it should come with a 2GB memmory card and be a fantastic phone, alas it falls WAY short of that promise.

it comes with a 64MB card, a paltry 5MB of on phone memory so everything fills up straight away. and is slow and big.

                      Hi to everybody.
I use musicmatch software on my pc ,I insert any cd to my pc I convert them into mp3 files and then I transfer them to my phone and I listen them or I set them as ringtone. The only problem is that mp3 files stored on memory card are not able to set as ringtone. You have to copy them first to the local phone memory and then set them as ringtone.

                      All the best

Hi Barry. As I understood well you want to set as ringtone the mp3 music files that are stored on your phone .İn this case you have to copy the mp3 file from your memory card to your phone memory and then you have to go to settings, profile ,and set profile my music in order to find the mp3 that you have already stored to the memory of your phone and then set it as ringtone
                        all the best

Hi Barry. In that case, we are hopeless. The best you can do is to flash the firmware to Euro or Jap version like Timmy did. Sorry Barry. I'm just wondering if it can play MP3/AAC/AAC+/MPEG4, how come it can't set them as ringtone?

                            Hi Reno and Ederson,
Thanks for pointing this out. I've converted my MP3 to AAC. How do you move the AAC ringtone to the internal memory from the card? The "Sound Gallery" is not displaying the converted AAC file for me to move. Thanks again.

Hi Barry. Maybe Ederson is right. You can try converting the song to AAC format using dbpoweramp but you have to download the AAC codec on dbpoweramp website. I'll try to send you a converted file when I get home. I'm at work right now.

Hi all. Just bought the SX833 a few days ago. I absolutely love this phone. It's an amazing phone with great features. Of course it's not a perfect phone but what phone is?

The only thing that sucks is that I can't buy any accessories from EBAY because the Hong Kong Ebay is in Chinese and since I can't read/write/speak the language I'm out of luck. Also, I can't use other EBAY sites cos of my billing address is in HK.

Does anyone know of any other way of getting the DVD Converter software as well as software/headphone jack/tv cables.

The HK firmware does not support mp3 ringtones. Only the japanese and euro firmware supports mp3 ringtone

                                      Hi Reno,
I still have no luck making the MP3 ringtone to work. I've also tried converted it directly from MP3 to MP3 using dbpoweramp after shortening it. Is it because of the firmware I'm using? I've the Hong Kong version SX833. Any other suggestion?
Do you think you can help me by directing me to a source where I can get one MP3 ringtone that has worked on your phone? This way I will know whether if the problem is my phone or not? Or if you can forward me a sample of your MP3 ringtone that works on your phone so I can try? My email address is bpoon2000@rogers.com. Your help is much appreciated. I really hate to loose this functionality over such a great phone.

Hi Barry. Try set the channel to "stereo" only. Check "preserve ID Tags". There shouldn't be any problem on your other settings. If it still the same, try reconverting the same file to MP3(Lame) again. Or try an MP3 file to convert rather than WAV. It might be "protected". Check your handset memory capacity as well as sometimes error messages don't really mean it.
