Dandy, even the most experienced guys in Japan can't unlock the V801SH so I would forget about getting the V801 unlocked...

Packerman, if Vietnam does not have a GSM service and Vodafone doesn't provide services in Vietnam then unfortunately the V801 is useless in that country.

Jason, no way you will be able to unlock the 801 if you bought it in Japan. Forget it and use it as it is

Any news if it's unlockable in HK or China? I have this phone now and want to unlock it so badly. Also I heard the HK version of this phone is a different model? So it might be possible even if HK gets it, I can't unlock mine...

J-SH53 user, I though the contact pattern on the USIM card on the Vodafone and the regular US SIM card looked different, but I guess you confirmed that the USIM can be used on a US version of an unlocked phone other than that of Vodafone! That's a great find! Although using a Vodafone USIM here in the US defeats the purpose (too expensive of a phone charge from Vodafone...). I've never thought of trying the opposite.
I've also heard rumors that the V801SH/SA has been unlocked in Hong Kong and now China! Wow, I hope that is true and in the near future the information will be available to us cel-aholics!!!!! Thanks for the updates!!! Aloha!

Just heard rumor from my wife that the 801sh can be unlocked for use in China. Still need to confirm this, but there is hope...

Mike: Although I havent checked the pin layouts on the 801sh's SIM contacts, I can definitely say that the Vodafone SIM card works in any other GSM phone (i.e. tested on an unlocked Nokia 8xxx series handset) and you can use it just as if you were using the 801SH in a foreign country. However, the reverse doesnt work.. :(

In the meantime, the GX30/32 is still looking like the best alternative for the rest of us outside Japan...

Ahmet, only Vodafone USIM card will work with the V801SH. Vodafone USIM card has a unique electrical contact design that is different from other SIM card and it will not work with SIM cards other than that of Vodafone USIM card.

Khaan, to answer your question about supporting MP3s, you have to convert them using Panasonic's SD-Jukebox software, and then using a SecureSD card reader/writer (not just any normal SD card reader, SecureSD!), you transfer the files on/off to the SD card.

Alternative way is good ol' analog to digital conversion using the little dongle they give you to plug your headphone into. This can work both ways, or if memory serves, there is also an optical one for input too... (I forget cuz I haven't seen ours since my wife took it with her...)

Ray, your question about the Bluetooth feature... I didn't know that the V801SH even had Bluetooth. I know that the GX30 does however. (Bluetooth isn't that big in Japan as it is elsewhere around the world... just kinda getting started...)

JIM & MIKE: wow, that's a surprise... I didn't know you couldn't use the cam and media player without the USIM in there! I'll definitely have to look into that. My J-SH53 (the predecessor to the V801SH) still works fine and dandy as a cam, sound & video player and JAVA game console for me here in the U.S. Only thing that doesn't work: making / receiving calls.... :(

KalvinFung: That's wonderful news! If Hong Kong will have it, maybe it'll be unlockable.... maybe?? (keeping fingers crossed)
