The USB data cable can only be used as a interface cable to make the phone a modem. You can't do anything else with the data cable other than using it as a modem data cable between phone and PC. I've bought it and tried it myself and the user's manual also states that is the only purpose of the cable and if you try to do anything else you may mess something up with the phones software and they will not be responsible.

OK K, when powered up without a SIM it shows "Check USIM Card". When you power up with a T-mobile SIM card it says the same thing "Check USIM Card". If I try to do anything with the (T-mobile) SIM card in it, it displays "Aquire Information to use Handset OK?" (the 801 will ask the same question with or without the T-mobile SIM card in it, just like there is no SIM present at all)if "Yes" is pressed "Unable to Establish Network Connection Check USIM Card" is displayed. I can set "FUNCTIONS" and "SCHEDULE" section but not "INFORMATION, MOBILE CAMERA, AND MULTIMEDIA" otherwise you can set the parameter like ringtone, clock, backlight, wallpaper, etc. It's great you can use the calendar and alarm section to it's fullest. If you want me to try it with a USIM card, SD memory card inserted, etc. let me know what else you want to know. I have a working unit of the V801SH with Vodafone service.
Vodafone USIM card when inserted into a regular unlocked phone, it will work fine and be able to take and place call.

ok, all those who have this phone outside can give some details and I will try to explore ways to unlocking them. Tell me what you see when you switch on the phone with and without your own country`s local SIM card. Thanks. =)

default setting won't do anything to unlock the phone, as mentioned earlier these types of Japanese phone are tightly software locked and is very hard to unlock. I've heard of one place in the Phillipines that have unlocked the V801SA, but I am not 100% sure if it is true. Only time will tell...

Yes Aj, the phone is a UMTS/GSM 900/1800/1900MHz tri-band phone. Although the phone is (software) Locked to Vodafone and can only be used with a Vodafone roaming network. It will NOT accept any other USIM card other than a Japanese USIM card. I use this phone in Hawaii under T-mobile's 1900Mhz network and it works fine, it's over a $1/minute per phone call, so it's not cheap! Hope this answers your question. The specification part on this site is wrong, it does cover 1900Mhz GSM also.
