FIRMWARE UPGRADE PROBLEM - HELP SE...
Hi all SE P990i is a great phone - i must say but i just upgraded my firmware from

* Now to the problem is that after i upgraded the phone, it starts faster but i discovered that when i flip the keypad open - the center spacebar that should be able to activate the phone pad - is not working again...
IS ANYONE HAVING THIS SAME PROBLEM.... PLS HELP!

no hardware problem for me so far.
its really solid and nice construction.
no cosmetic problem as well.
no unwanted parts movement or creaking sound.
you'll just hear the number pad clicks when you open and close it which is normal because it is the lock spring.
with regard to software, the first releases has some problems which was quickly addressed with firmware updates. newer models right now are usually updated but new firmware is still available for free from Sony Ericsson site.
as a matter of fact, another firmware will be released this august maybe on the 2nd week im not sure.
i did upgrade my firmware the first day i got it and also installed a screen protector as soon as i opened it from the box to protect the screen from scratches. also bought an ipod soft pouch that fits with my P990i to avoid scratches on the body. hehe you can see how im so careful with my unit.
when you buy P990i, it will also include a wrist strap so you can use it in case you accidentally drop it while holding it. but i didnt put mine though.
i also requested for the France made unit because i dont want chinese characters on the number pad.

your unit might have little battery power already when you bought it. drain that power completely then fully charge your phone. do this full drain and full charge cycle again (just use phone normally). after that you cannormally charge your battery even if its not fully drained yet.
also make sure that the WLAN is disabled as it will be active by default. doublecheck bluetooth is disabled as well.
on the Control Panel option in Devices and Backlight, make sure you have power save activated to increase battery life.
you can also decrease backlight brightness to a setting you can tolerate so that it will eat less power.
basic light usage a day:
20 mins total calls daily
15-25 text messages daily
4-8 camera shots daily
3 mins video daily
7 mins game daily
10 mins wifi use daily
10-15 mins any other activities total daily
the rest is standby
those should last for 2days or more
if heavy use like:
more then an hour calls daily
over 50 text msgs daily
25mins or more wifi use daily
video recording more then 10mins daily
etc
it will last less than 2 days
maybe one and a half days
but if someone bought this P990i, meaning he is more after business use like email, phone talk, a little wifi for quick information search on the internet, access task and document viewer. it will last 2 days or more. because if he bought this for productive or business use, he will not really use camera, video, games, etc etc like teens do.

Hi Lazar
if you can live without touchscreen and video call, then get E61i.
they have pretty much same function, P990i is just touchscreen which makes it faster to use the interface.
P990i also has better camera and allows you to use normal numberpad for texting. i prefer P990i as i can text while driving without looking on the keypad because i have all the key positions in my head memorized.
on the other hand, E61i has bigger screen which will make it perfect for browsing internet and email tool (great for users of internet on the go). it also has good battery life.
its up to you which function you'll give priority.
i was also between E61i and P990i when i was still using Nokia N80. but then i decided to get P990i and happy with it.

anyway thankss for user opinion and gsmarena. i buy this morning this pda phone p990i. this the first i use touchscreen phone . can u tell me how to make maximal working for the first use ? maybe 8 hours charge or .....? please tell me ... coz i love this phone and i dont want to be broke or always hangs for the first month i use. i u use SE z530i too , but the soud is very low...after 6 month the flip is not stable and it become blankscreen and i repair ir in se original repair center in indonesia sby it's cost us$18 cos i buy it in holand.if i buy in ina it will cost us$13 only.... but still love this phone...thanks SE.... pls hope i can get answer to optimum performance cos i just buy this phone this morning.....agung 21 mail : gagal_tiyo@yahoo.com

i just got the p990i 3 days ago with the latest firmware r9g and made in france and i tell you i got no problem. its fast just like my p900 and you can beat the price of $320. inspite of all the negative feedback, i think its the best phone i ever had, nice sound, good resolution, excellent battery life. mine is 2days, good camera and fast firmware.

I too prefer the latest firmware, in including the alarm volume which is now consistent, boot up timing and phone can handle ram better.
Besides, upgrading is free. I don't see a point for anyone not upgrading to the latest.

hu said that you cannot make call when there's no flip with r9g? i dont have any problem making or receiving calls with or without the flip and im using the latest firmware.
dont mislead people here.
if you've got problems with your phone on the latest version, then its you. i hav a group of friends that uses P990i and some of their relatives and boyfriends too and they dont experience the things you are talking about shakeel.
