to the person who is asking about the memory consumption after the software upgrade,
i already posted this before but here u go again,,

once i upgraded the phone, the RAM i had left was about 14MB and the inbuilt flash memory was about 60MB. I believe that was the same before i upgraded the software too.

Reset the screen brightness to 40% and extend your battery life.

Hi All, ive just read pretty much all the opinions in last 60 pages, most of you are sensible helpful people which is much appreciated. However people still seem to cry about this phone and have tantrums, and go on to suggest a nokia or blackberry. this phone is NOT a total waste of money, like any phone(especially nokia)they have problems origanally, my nokia n80 has been very troublesome and i will be glad to go back to sony ericcson p series after having p900/910i a few years back.It seems to me people dont give the phone chance, the software update seems to be rectifying problems and at least SE do updates that work. I work in a mobile retailer in the UK, and i dont know of any manufacturer of phones that havnt had a few teething problems with certain handsets, Final words, thanks to all who offer sensible and helpful advice. and to all the SE "haters", good luck with your new phones, your asking a lot for a flawless phone!!

ok so i have p990i its a good phone... but there seems to be some glitches, my phone freezes, hangs or reboots for no apparent reason. At times the only way to restart it to normal operational mode is to remove the battery manually and then reinitialising the phone.

Is this a software problem. If so is there a "patch" site?

I have not added any new software to my phone.

Anyone out there with the same :glitches: and have they found a solution to this?

                Thanks

i do hope SE would finally bring back the reliable OS from P-series. imo, the best designed model from that series was the P910, and the coolest was the P800.according to the news in this year SE may come with the new P-series and M-series phones with improved UIQ and OS together with the succesion of their M600 and P990 models,=D

to the person who is asking about the memory consumption after the upgrade,
once i upgraded the phone, the RAM i had left was about 14MB and the inbuilt flash memory was about 60MB. I believe that was the same before i upgraded the software too.

to the person who is comparing P900 and P990,
first of all, i never had a P900 so i dont know if that pda had all the functions that u mentioned but all the problems u talked about the P990 are very much true. before the upgrade, this phone was terrible and it was crashing all the time. from my prospect the main problem with this phone is the smallest RAM of 14MB. that is too small. if u just open 2 or 3 programs, it takes up all the RAM and the phone gets slower or in some cases the phone reboots it self. silent mode u r talking about is not true. u can put the phone on silent with 2 clicks. battery life is not exactly same as it states here - 9 hours of talk time. r u kidding me? i was just trying to find out how the battery runs today after the new upgard and here are my results..
                        fully charged up yesterday night..
got up at 9am and took it out of the charging cable.
made about 70 minutes calls, all the time my stereo bluetooth was connected. listened to the music through speaker and stereo bluetooth headset for about 60 minutes. played games for about 40 minutes. downloaded emails for about 8 times and thats it. i stil have 50% battery life left.
not bad after upgrading the firmware.
when i first baught this phone i paid about $650 with tax and everything and after using it for a while i felt it was not worth it but after upgrading the formware, oh man, everything is so fast. i have a 4GB memory card and all the music and videos on there. i m happy now. right now i have an iphone theme and looks so cool.
i will recommend this phone to any one who wants to have a pda with all the multimedia features and a decent camera. there were some software issues before but now i dont see any problems at all.

                          to brien
If you like the P900/910, you might be disappointed with the P990. The following small flaws all put together are turning to be quite frustrating:
                          - Access to the calendar or contact from the main screen (flip open) requires 2 clicks (not personalisable?)
                          - Calendar view is by default in week mode and cannot be set (personalised) to day view like in the P900
                          - It is not possible anymore to set the "private" flag for a calendar entry
                          - It is not possible anymore to turn the silent mode on in just 2 clicks
                          - The styletus is on the left and not on the right
                          - You cannot reuse the category (private, misc,...) available in the contact list of the P900/910 so you have to start classifying all your contacts again with the new system (folders)
                          - The "back" key which replaces the genius "5D JogDial" we had on the left doesn't work as nicely, you must move your thumb all the time...
                          - If you entered phone numbers with "-" in the P900/910, they won't work, you need to modify all of them which will in turn remove all the spaces and other "()" you had before...
                          - Very unstable connection manager; You can program access point, but the software is not capable of detecting AP connectivity (or absence thereof). So it is likely you'll lose all connectivity after a while (requires reboot to switch back to UMTS as the software seems to be lost)
                          - Powering the device on and off requires the user to wait for the menu and acknowledge the action
                          - In silent mode, the "mute" function doesn't turn of the vibrator
                          - Software glitches require a reboot from time to time (not possible to stop some programs)
                          - Absence of SIP stack for VoIP
                          - Battery life seems to be much shorter + you need a different charger than the P900 or 910.
                          - Infrared with another phone works only 1/2 of the time
Looks like some of the genius who participated in the initial P900 left the development team...
Good point; Most of these points are software related, so they can be solved with some effort from Sony-Ericsson. Can do better.

                          are this things true?

any body who has battery problems with this phone, heres what u do to improve it..
if u r in the US, u will not be able to use 3G service so just follow the instructions and only select GSM service and that increases battery life drastically.
Menu ---> settings ----> control panel ---> Connections ----> Mobile Networks ---> click on the Mobile networks Tab on the far up left corner ---> click on GSM/3G network ----> select GSM only
thats it and enjoy more battrey life on ur P990i.
                              thanks

SE does the upgrades in a manner that in order to get to the highest firmware, u have to update ur phone so many times. i had the same problem that u did with the software and i upgraded my phone two times and thats it u will have R9 firmware. just do update one more time and u will get that firmware. This update has been by far the best update and no more lock ups, no more restarts, very much all the java applications work and probably u will get that golf game back too. u will have so many language options too. battery life has been increased and if u shut off the 3G signal it probably increases drastically. if u r in the US, u dont need that 3G cause that 3G srvice frequancies only work in UK right now. let me know if u have any questions..

Don't waste your time with this phone. For a start SE announced it's release Oct 2005 but actually released it 1 year later (in the UK) making it instantly obsolete. Pathetic SE! Never the less I bought one. Unimpressed i'm afraid. The menu's were uncustomiseable like the P910i and the thumb board was badly designed, camera was lousy, wifi sucked, slower performance than P910i, bulkier design, smaller screen. Poor, poor phone. Stay away from this phone, you WILL regret it. SE have not done themselves justice.

                                    Hi to all u guys!
I've read (almost) all opinion in this forum. I get my 990 on early December last year, and i noticed it still use R4B001 for the firmware..and its 110% TRUE that the software is VERY BUGY! it always RESTART it self when i open EVERY application on the first time, some time it HANG, the menu is VERY SLOW....so i got it back to the dealer to ask about newest firmware(as i read in this forum that would be R9?!), after 3 days a got the phone back..BUT it still have R4!!and some file missing also the vijay 3d golf is GONE!! i complain but the dealer insist that they have upgrade my phone with new firmware(WTF**K).
So yesterday I decided to upgrade my self from internet.. after 2 hours on my laptop the process is finished..BUT now I(only) got R7 for the firmware...so can ANYONE tell me, where do I can get the R9?(although the software is FAR more stable than the R4)
...BTW In My Humble Opinion the PHONE JUST SO SEXY!! and I aggree that the BATTERY IS SUCK!(LAST only 12 Hours in daily normal usage).

my bat lasts about 2 days just reduce the brightness a notch and close all the running app there will be no problem.
