lol...people kept telling me that putting the sim card in was hard. its SO EASY. you dont need to push it in all the way. just slide the battery into place after you insert it and the battery will hold it in there =) i think ive had mine for a few months now and still NO KEYPAD problems!! i think maybe its because people use their nails like someone said before?? i send out more than 100 txt per day and mine are still good as new. i feel that the slider is giving out though..still have no idea why bluetooth headset cant be detected...and i have to agree that the vibration is farely weak. i get missed calls alot of the time when i turn off my ringtone.

Highly recommended set!!

the amount of stupid posts on here is ridiculous, this is a good phone... i've not had any issues with it... my keypad has NOT broken my 3,6 and 9 keys are FULLY lit and are not DULL in anyway compared to other keys. please don't listen to these stupid people who post faults saying the phone constantly falls apart... it DOESN'T. as for comparing it to the w850i i find that the s500i has a much better construction and a much better battery cover... (w850i's being made of cheap think plastic that was not the correct fit for the phone... constantly creeks when u text or dial)

not my phone, gfs.
s500 keypad feels fragile... too small for me.
sliding mechanism broke within a month. too much trouble gettin sony to replace it under warranty. have to wait a few months for parts to be available at local repair shop.
if it wasnt for the damn troubles we've faced, id say its a pretty good phone, almost as good as my w850, but i feel that overall the w850 has a stronger, more solid construction. s500 shines in the display, vivid colours and brightness.
IMO: 6.5-7.0/10 overall

Glen,
The phone will sometimes work even without the sim installed properly. It will either say..."Install sim card" or work, but not correctly. So your problem may be as simple as following the sim card install instructions I posted on the prior post?

To insert the sim card properly.... use a key or bic pen cap to push it into it's slot all the way until it locks. You have to do the same to take it out (push it in and it will unlock and come out) unless you're a girl then you can use your long fingernail. At first, I thought the battery held it into place, but later learned that the sim card goes in further until it locks in place without the battery having to hold it into place.
SE sucks with their directions.
Many here are also having trouble removing the battery cover as well. Don't try and take it off by prying it up or put it on by pushing it down, but rather use your thumb to push/slide it off and then put it back on the same way by sliding it on. You think that the curve at the bottom of the phone will prevent this sliding action but it doesn't.

Ive had this phone for less than a week now. On the first day I got it, it locked up, so I had to take the battery out and restart it. Then it said "Insert SIM Card". Even though the sim was in. I only had that problem once. Now the phone wont go into the menus at all, when you push down on the joystick button, it should go into menus. But it goes into internet mode, but not the normal internet mode. Then you can push select and it goes into TXT messaging. I tried taking the battery out and restarting it, but that didnt fix it. I ended up taking out the battery for a couple of minutes then restarted it and that fixed the problem. I also tried to do a firmware update over the internet, but there was none available. Im a bit sceptical about this phone. I previously had a W800i which didn't miss a beat. I think I might be regreting upgrading now. :(

Alex,
I chose to ignore the many negative posts here and regrettably bought the S500. I have since returned the phone after much time and trouble and will never buy another SE product until their customer satisfaction ratings improve.
The 3,6,9,# keys were not illuminated properly, the slider was flimsy (I don't think the slider will hold up over time), and I was not about to wait to see if my keys would crack. The dealer has since quit selling this particular model phone due to the many returns.
My advice....A few complaints, I would ignore. But a slew of documented complaints....You get what you deserve if you buy this phone and will join the idiots, like myself, who refused to accept logic and made a decision based on emotion. Hence, you are crazy if you buy this phone knowing what you know!!!
I agree that a much better choice is the Mobile Choice Awards, "Phone of The Year", Samsung G-600 (see link below). This is the highest award achieved by any mobile phone and it's only a little more expensive that the S500. If you look at the many reviews, professional, and user, there is little doubt that it is indeed the best overall phone in the market without 3g.

the keypad is good, the phone is good and pretty and the keypad crack thing is avaiable for every phone brand, every keypad cracks, if you touch it with your nails...skip this and the keypad will work perfectly. i have the w580 and about it was said the same thing, i have no problem with it, works perfectly, so pls stop anoying people and make them not buy the phone they like with this keypad problem...for all users, if you like the phone, buy it, stop believing what everybody says...:) it will crack if you touch it with your nails, if you don't, it will work perfectly...thanks :D

keypad cracking is a isse on this phone... early models anyways... i think it has been sorted now tho, my keypad illuminates fine no slight dimmer on the 3,6 and 9 keys... people on here tend to bash phones cos its not their own... makes the site worthless for information purposes. you can flash the software to the w580i walkman firmware if you wish.
