have had my 810i for a week here in LA. love the design, look, feel -- SE had me sold after the s710. sounds great, radio works great, camera is fine, battery is amazing. but i've had a ridiculous number of dropped calls, five bars everytime... is this also a firmware issue? also my shortcut function (to the right of the play/pause button) keeps resetting arbitrarily. haven't had the flash problem and i hope i don't see it.

I recently upgraded to the w810i, and I have to say, I'm liking it a lot.
It does have one little annoyance though. When you stop using the phone, the screen shuts down and goes totally black, as if the phone has been turned off. It's not a big deal, but it does mean that I can't just glance at the phone to check the time, or see if I've missed a message or something, I actually have to press a key to activate the screen again.
Is there any way of changing this?
Cheers.

Retrix: Alas, I have already returned the phone. It wasn't only the flashing flash that was the problem it was the fact it totally crashed and the screen started flashing continously too. For now, I'm stuck with my old s700i and no contacts - the w810i allows you to back them up to the (memory) smart card, but this being a more advanced version than the one rovided with the old phone, I can't even upload my contacts back to it. I'm so frustrated with the situation.
O2 have since offered me a w800i, but I find it garish and it lacks a number of the neat little menu features the w810i had. I guess I'll just have to hold out until I get a new one issued... :(
Bugs in early software are to be expected but you'd think SE wouldhave tested things out more!

For US residents:
After reading all these comments about W810i,I have come to the conclusion that this phone has some software issues which will eventually be resolved by SE engineers by the time it reaches US market. There were also reports of massive recall in Taiwan.People in US have complained that unlocked phone has some problem working with Cingular networks.I think its better to wait until it is carried by Cingular and T-Mobile.By the time they release this in US market, it will be much improved firmware than Europeon or Asian versions.Hopefully this phone will also be stocked by Sony Style stores, if you want to buy it unlocked.(SonyStyle.com)There are two such stores in
LA area.

celaurie: Several people have this flashing light problem, including myself. Don't feel bad about not getting a replacement because I did get one and its got exactly the same problem (infact its even worse; the navigation keys are funny with my new one which frusrtates me alot), there is a fault in the firmware that comes with the O2 W810is and the only thing you can do is wait for a firmware update. Unless you find a physical problem I strongly suggest you just hold on to it and wait for updates or like me, you may end up getting one with actual physical problems.

I have the W800i and the only difference with the W800i and the W810i is (of course) the colour, and the music buttons put on the front as opposed to the sides. The black colour is sleek, but I love the fact that the W800i is UNIQUE!!!!! There's no other phone in those two unique colours. And of course there is also the fact that the W800i was Sonyericsson's 1st Walkman phone. Yippee!!

I got a brand new w810i from O2 UK a couple of weeks ago.
I've been using Ericsson and SE phones for almost 10 years and as usual am mighty impressed with the upgrade. The speed of the menus and overall features of the phone make it a great upgrade from my old s700i.
Last night after having tried to use the camera I found the flash to be, well flashing. The light would remain on for about 10 seconds and then start to pulse on and off. I could find nothing in the settings to prevent this from happening nor any documents online to diagnose the problem.
I decided to call O2 this morning to seek a replacement. However, when I got up to my phones alarm, I found my phone had crashed and was in an endless cycle of flashing a white screen.
Having called O2 to get a replacement I was told SE have slowed the release of the phones. According to the person I spoke to ?possibly indicating issues with the new model. The bummer is that I may have to wait anything up to eight weeks for a new one. The best O2 can offer me is a k750i.
Has anyone had similar problems or heard anything about known issues or supply problems?

I have this phone for a week now and its amazing.Good buy.Although i have a slight problem. When i connect the phone to the computer using the USB cable, the phone first asks u to to change to file transfer mode. When u do that the phone restarts itself. After that its not detecting the USB cable on my computer(Windows2000)The mobile icon on the lower right corner of the comp does not come.Sometimes it does and goes away as soon as I switch to file transfer mode on the phone.I did this several times, even restarted my computer but it does not help.I was able to do it once, i got the mobile icon for file transfer...I transferred the mp3 files to my phone before switching my phone to file tansfer mode. After i transferred the files, the icon n the extra drive went away.has anyone faced this problem.

I currently have a nokia 6630, which, like all the symbian based Nokia's, allows you to set a lock code, so that after 60 seconds, you are required to enter a code to unlock the keys. As one respondent said, Sony WILL be loosing business over this vital feature. I cant live without the lock now, it stops colleagues looking through private photos\videos, if the phone were to be lost, it would stop intruders gaining access to my numbers & information. I have decided to purchase a W810, as the battery & camera are better than my nokia, but I will be carrying 2 phones all the time, with nothing sensative being stored on the Sony. Hopefully someone will release a 3rd party application with this functionality, as I doubt Sony has any plans to do so. If you have any information about this, please feel free to email me.
Peace Guys & Gals,
Lizard.

Re: flashing light
Well Sony Ericsson just replied to my email with the standard "if you believe your phone is faulty, send here for a replacement" type message. Thanks for actually reading the email guys *sigh*
Basically, this is one of those things that happens with early firmware revisions - there are little bugs or faults that haven't been picked up in QA that will get sorted out later. In this case, the engineers at SE just set the voltage warning threshold a little bit too high.
I know that Vodafone send out over the air firmware updates, so if and when Sony Ericsson change the threshold, I should get the updated firmware. I'm not so sure about people on other networks.

Re Flashing Light.
The problem is that I still get the flashing on a full or almost full charge. I would understand if the flashing occurred when the battery indicated, but it happens straight away.
if you aske me, it seems to be a poor implementatation of a questionable feature.
Other than that, i do like the phone..well featured and so far pretty reliable. not too wrapped with the ear buds and the video mmedia player is not very functional...but you can't have everthing

Purchased this on Tuesday and so far happy with it. Has anyone else noticed that the d-pad makes a creaking nose when you press it. Is this a fault? Apart from that the rest of the phone is fine so far.

To Retrix:
Its called a low voltage warning. When u start using the phone, you start to drain the battery. Using the walkman, camera / video will drain the battery. When u turn the light on, it will drain the battery even more to a point where the voltage will drop below a limit, then thats when the light will start to flash on u. Its in the software and not a defective phone.
When my battery is low and i start to use the camera, and activate the light, it will start to flash. I charge up the phone and do the same thing and the light will not flash anymore.
