ah beng:
Where do you live? In Taiwan, the phone is 530 US dollars. That's the price sold at an authorized SE dealer (which is always higher than other places). But I do know that it is $400 US dollars if you subscribe to certain carriers (and sign a contract to use that carrier for like 15 months). $400 is a GREAT deal! But again, you have to use a certain carrier and for a certain amount of monthly fee.
I do know that in Singapore it is cheaper and so is Hong Kong. Again, I'm talking about buying the phone unlocked and without subscribing to a certain carrier. But prices do vary from country to country.
In Taiwan, it's 530 US dollars. You can call that high. If you could get it for 500 or less, you'd be doing fine. As for dropping in price quickly, I doubt it. the w800 really hasn't dropped all that much since it came out....

The new manuever wheel is a bit harder to navigate. As stated by others, there's no joystick, so the phone relies on pressing the top, right, left, or bottom of the wheel to navigate. Mine is a bit tight so sometimes I have to press harder...I do like the joystick a bit more in this case. But I'm sure the w810's navigation will last longer. But mine does make a creaky sound when I press on the left button of the navigation wheel...
One complaint I have about this phone is that it goes to standby mode (complete blank screen, looks as if it is shut off!!) too quickly. I might be downloading a song or talking or thinking of a message to write and poof, it goes to standby mode way too soon.
Another problem I've been hearing is the Light function. I was over at SE 's store and heard that many customers are complaining that it doesn't work...again, I haven't played with the Light function but it seems to work ok for me...

I live in Taiwan. I bought my phone at an authorized Sony Ericsson store in Taipei 101. It cost me 530 US dollars. \
I tried setting the silent mode and taking pictures, but it doesn't work...the sound is still the same. You can change the shutter sound, but can't lower the volume or shut it off completely. I DO know that in some countries, the phones sold in that region have a mute on the shutter...I don't know whether that is true for European models. Rumor has it that there is a firmware which DOES shut it off...but I've yet to find it.
The sound quality is just as good. Of course, not the same as iPods or Sony MP3's but still decent. Just as the photo quality is not as great as the k750 which is still in a class of its own. I still think this phone is exactly the same as the w800, only difference is the color (black opposed to white) and no lense cover, which may prove to be a problem in the future...

to James: thanks for the info. you have provided. Yet, if the auto keypad lock is activated, how to unlock the keypad lock? I like to unlock my phone with some type of password when the keypad lock is activated. Reason for this is to prevent other people from using my phone. I know for sure the K750i and W800i doesn't comes with this option. And the only security that require a password for these phones, only when you turn on and change sim card.

I bought this phone in 2 days ago (Friday afternoon). I live in Asia and it seems most Asian countries are rolling these out day by day. As the problem with cell phones sold in Asian countries, I can't shut off the shutter sound. I heard there's a firmware that does this? Can anyone direct me to the site so I can explore? Even if it isn't for the w810, I'd like to see what a firmware is...

The middle button isn't a joystick atall it is just a push button. It is often mistaken for a useless joystick but really it is just a button which is wobbly because of the way it is designed.

the only thing i don't like with W and K models is lacks of security application. However, P series is okay. I used to own k750i and W800i but these models are lacking of application password and no auto-phone lock at all. Unlike motorola, nokia, etc. anyone know if this particular model can be assigned an application password or auto-phone lock? thanks....

Following up on the o2 upgrade business - it seemed to me more like i was phoning a market stall than a big company, having to haggle down the price. It seems strange to me that they gave in pretty easy and halved the price of the phone, and I think it's just luck of the draw for who you speak to if you can pre-order or not. Having said all this, as far as big companies go, phoning them was surprisingly good - didn't have to wait for ages, and i could understand the bloke which is always nice :o)
