Yes, X1 is the current flagship of SE - but you still have to check for cracks.

BTW. it is widely reported that cracks develope as you start using the unit. It is not visible for weeks.

As far as speed:

IT IS STILL SLOW!!!!!!!

SE X1 was selected and published as:

˝X1 is one of the biggest flop of 2008!˝

˝It may have been the most eagerly awaited telephone of the year... and it may well have been the most disappointing telephone of the year, too. Introduced in February with (almost) operational prototypes, the phone has only just become available in stores. Its “revolutionary” Windows Mobile interface was not only slow, but it also wasn’t any more functional than other operating systems from HTC, Samsung or Asus. And since there’s only one Windows Mobile model from Sony Ericsson, developments for the proprietary interface, quite naturally, are scarce. What was supposed to be the ultimate smartphone is at best only passable, and at worst a total failure.˝

Robert, 21 Apr 2009Can someone please tell me: What is meant by "SMS (threade... moreSMS threaded view - it basically keeps all your texts in conversation format, so for example - if send a dozen messages to one person, each response comes through in the same text. whereas your standard phone would show each individual text, this phone will keep all the texts from a single contact altogether, even if its not part of the same conversation.

Robert, 21 Apr 2009Can someone please tell me: What is meant by "SMS (threade... moreIt means it shows the sms as a conversation like in the iPhone where lets say you receive a sms it will show you all the sms that you sent and recieved for that contact, just like email when you use the reply option.

Got in an X1 a while ago. At hand to compare, an iPhone and an older W800i. The reason for the X1 is that while the iPhone virtual keyboard is pretty slick, it doesn't really work for me. Considered a Blackberry, but the consensus seemed to be that if I'm not using RIM's push e-mail (and I don't), there's not a lot of reason to use the Blackberry.

                  The good bits:
Not much to fault on the hardware. It looks great, it feels great. There is nothing to indicate that it is not top-quality and well-built. The iPhone still feels better in hand though. What is amazing is that it is only marginally larger than the much older W800i and it is "pocketable", which can't be said with the iPhone.
The screen is fantastic. In day-to-day phone use, the superior resolution is not obvious compared to iPhone. Where it does stand-out is when on the Web or reading PDF's. In bright sunlight, the X1 is at least as good as the iPhone, if not better. If you crank up the brightness on the X1 in a normal room, it is uncomfortably bright.
The touch screen is not as "slick" as the iPhone's, but that is due to the use of the resistive touch screen. Some may fault SE for that choice, but since WinMo is not meant so much for fingers, a pen is almost mandatory and that pretty much dictates the use of a resistive screen. That being said, it works pretty well (and I actually do this stuff for a living, so I know how hard it is to get it right on a resistive screen).
Camera is okay. For me, camera is just a bonus feature on the phone, just for "emergencies", not to replace a real camera. I wish it had an "instant-on" lens cover/switch like the W800i, I also wish it wasn't so laggy when I press the shutter button. Sure the iPhone responds better, but that camera is, uhh...well, not good.
The keyboard took some getting used to, but I got the hang of it. It's not a laptop keyboard, but I can type reasonably fast with it now and I do prefer it to the iPhone.
Battery life has not blown me away, but it is acceptable. Partly that is my fault, since the phone is capable of so much more, I'm actually using it for a lot more activities compared to the W800i. Still feels like I get at least 2-3 days usage between charges (on 24/7) so no complaints.

                  The bad bits:
The software. After years of other OS from Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, Nokia, etc. this is my first Windows Mobile. And it sucks. Sucks big time. It's like having a Ferrari hobbled with used tires from a truck.
It's true that there are occasional "lags" when I tap a button or icon. Most of the time the response is okay though. The iPhone blows it away with its consistent, reliable performance.
The panels are actually a great idea. Starting with the default SE panel, it took me a while to fiddle with it so that it works as easily as the iPhone interface and for the large part, shields me from that piece of garbage called Windows Mobile. That makes me feel a lot better. The SE Media panel is good too, I just question why it sometimes whips up the Windows Media player for some stuff...
Has lots of useful software, my opinion better than the iPhone in this regard. One thing is clear, unlike the iPhone, WinMobile is NOT made for fingers! That being said, I'm pleasantly surprised but how infrequently I've had to pull out the pen.
Calling, as expected is fine. Note that I've never had an issue with the coverage even with my X1 or the W800i even though I'm in North America.

Summary: Great hardware hobbled by mediocre software. It's a fine phone, the only 2 questions are:
                  1) Does your usage model fits this phone? This is for you if you need to have a real keyboard and "smartphone" features. Otherwise, go with a cheaper numberpad phone, there are many non-Windows options that are much better.
                  2) How much is the phone worth? I would suggest not the $799USD offered at SonyStyle. (Luckily not what I paid for it). I would suggest it would be worth picking up at around the $500-600 mark.

Is it better than the iPhone? In some regards yes. In terms of the quality & design of software and physical design, I would say iPhone has the edge. In terms of features (both hardware and software), I would give the X1 the nod. If you do not need the features, I would say go with the iPhone if you can handle the virtual keyboard.

Anonymous, 19 Apr 2009wait for WM 7 and you'll see who's the king of OS I still ... moreHow long SE have been in making cellphone products?
                    To long to remember.
                    How about Apple?
                    2 yrs
After 1st iPhone came out (6/2007) for few months, Aplle already on top of the smart phone market, then a yr later (7/2008) 3G out. Now no other phone can not compare to iPhone....3rd one coming out this summer (2009).
SE, Samsung, Nokia and other cellphone makers should stop design so many junk phones, concentrate on 1, 2 or 3 max.
Why people only compare other phone to iPhone more and more.
Last 6 month I have tried so many phone Blackberry Bold, SE X1a, Touch HD, Nokia 5800 US ver, HTC Fuze, none of them can beat iPhone 3G which I am using. All this phone Ebayed.
I am waiting for new iPhone come out.
