Anonymous, 13 Apr 2020You and your friends were hyped about it.
Well the 'genera... moreMy bad. You are right about that.
I only meantioned about OnePlus because I didn't really know much about the other Chinese phone companies. (I never really had interest in them back in 2014. Sorry about that)
I think it may have been Oneplus' popularity that triggered more interest in other Chinese phone companies. (its my opinion, not a fact) Like a Gateway Phone. People weren't really sure if Chinese phones were as good as they were on paper. But as more people started buying them and talking about them, (as you said, Mouth Publicity) more people were likely to have interest in other Chinese phones.
So basically for the Chinese phone market (at least in the beginning when it was difficult to advertise outside their country) relied on consumers to keep adding fuel to the fire. (supports your point, right)
So then, Sony, What does Sony have to do to get their fire big and blazing?

OnePlus
My and my friends were hyped about OnePlus... moreYou and your friends were hyped about it.
Well the 'general average consumer' had never heard of that brand. Nor did they plan on buying phone from some new Chinese company on the block.
"Everyone talked about it in the Rom modding forums (XDA)
OnePlus targeted a Very Specific audience"
>> You said it yourself, only a specific audience was targeted with marketing.
And why single out OnePlus? I am talking about Chinese manufacturers in general like Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, Huawei, etc. all were relatively less known, definitely not on the radar of most people and many were doubtful about using those Chinese phones.
They didn't share the same level of trust that casual user had for brands like Samsung, Apple, Sony, LG.
But that trust developed over time not coz of marketing but coz the products were really good especially for the price.
They only got popular over the years because of word of mouth publicity, not marketing. Which is exactly my point!

Vineet Reddy, 13 Apr 2020Now you will make me cry. Mi entered India with Mi3 in mid ... moreKeep being in denial boy.
When did I mention Xiaomi didn't exist in 2014?
Can you Plz tell me where I stated that?
You are just trying to change the topic.
Truth is bitter, isn't it?
You think I am some Sony hater when delusional fans like you can't accept constructive criticism of their favorite brand.
I want Sony to do well, heck I also want LG and HTC to do well.
More competition means better devices and more innovation for the consumers.
Had it not been for Chinese phones, Samsung still would be selling phones with weak internals in the budget segments.
But Sony are not going to do well unless they change their strategy.
Sony, HTC and LG can only resurface in the mobile segment if they produce bang for buck products.
Good to see LG understand this and launch the V60 at around 600 Euros when other flagships cost over 1000 Euros. Though it's not top of the line flagship and has a few things missing, I'd see ppl buying it over certain Chinese budget flagships. They'll definitely sell more than last year.

OnePlus
My and my friends were hyped about OnePlus One since it was ANNOUNCED (before it was released). (my ex, her sister, and her sister's bf got the OPO) I ended up with the Xperia Z2 because everything else about OnePlus wasn't worth it to me. I think same chipset but higher clock speeds on oneplus. The plastic back was really bad at dissipating heat too.
The phone ran a Custom CyanogenMod OS or something like that
Everyone talked about it in the Rom modding forums (XDA)
OnePlus targeted a Very Specific audience.
That was their marketing strategy. I call it HYPE. (also it was really cheap)
So I disagree about oneplus having no advertisement. If they hadn't said anything, Nobody would of known about it.

Anonymous, 13 Apr 2020Yes such an advanced phone with 21W fast charging and weak ... moreThe last part of your statement was quite off. The first Sony phone to offer 18W fast charging was Xperia Z2, though only in Japan in 2014. Then the first global product of Sony Xperia to offer 18W fast charging was Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, the same year. The Z3 received the same treatment as Xperia Z2, where the QC 2.0 only available in Japan.
The first vanilla Xperia flagship to received 18W fast charging globally is the Z3+ in 2015 and the first global Sony Xperia dual-SIM model to get the same treatment are Xperia Z5 Dual and Z5 Premium Dual. The first mid-ranger to receive the 18W FC are Xperia XA and XA Ultra, and the first low-entry to receive 18W FC is Xperia L3.

Anonymous, 13 Apr 2020Ok they loose a point for quick charge and I'll take off 1/... moreExactly, my point, no phone in 2020 is perfect.
Xperia 1 II Certainly not the most advanced.
Yet ppl are justifying these high prices.
1200 Euros is too expensive for any brand be it Sony, Samsung, Apple or others.

Vineet Reddy, 13 Apr 2020Well, get your facts right. We will continue discussion aft... moreI am assuming, you stay in India.
Xiaomi didn't even sell phones In India back then. They had zero marketing back then. I still know ppl who imported it from sites like Banggood simply coz they were better value for money compared to other budget devices on the market. This was before Xiaomi officially launched phones in India.
I also know ppl who have imported the Mate 30 pro since it wasn't launched in India and was such a good phone. Do I see anyone importing Sony phones? Nope!
Marketing can only boost sales upto a certain level. High pricing turns off users towards other brands. Even if tomorrow, Sony puts their ads on every billboard in the country, on public transport, launch Commercials, etc. It still won't sell as high as Samsung or Apple or others.
Definitely not at 1,200€ price. Now, if they reduce it to less than 900 Euros ,I can see them selling more even without advertising.

For all the people who are trying hard to find shortcomings or trying to show down SONY. Here is one point you can curse SONY on.
Included Headphones, I mean SONY is implementing the best DAC of any smartphone ever and then they back off on including a better pair of headphones while charging that high for the entire package. Sad, really sad.
I wish they could have at-least threw in their old in-ear studio monitors which hardly cost around $100-125 for production. That would have been an insane package.

Anonymous, 13 Apr 2020Yes such an advanced phone with 21W fast charging and weak ... moreOk they loose a point for quick charge and I'll take off 1/2 point for your hypothesis about the camera (which is probably wrong) how many extra points for the 4k, oled HDR screen (not uhd screen, don't want to go through that again). No phone is perfect, pick what's good for you. For me the screen is the most important, I can live with the battery only lasting a day and I can live with it taking longer to charge while I sleep. As for everything else. It can't really be beaten in hardware.

Sony gave 18W charging in 2015-16 if I remember correctly.

Vineet Reddy, 13 Apr 2020Don't know my friend that should I be laughing at your poor... moreOnePlus and other Chinese brands started advertising and marketing heavily only after they became popular. Heck they had such low profit margins that they had to sell online. Majority of the users during that period didn't buy phones online, they use to buy from physical stores which had Sony, HTC, LG, Samsung, etc, none of the Chinese brands.
They started of with zero marketing. Never saw an commercial for OnePlus or Xiaomi before they became popular brands among users after word of mouth publicity. It's only after gaining certain marketshare, that they started investing money in advertising.
Truth is bitter, You can continue to be in denial about Sony.

Anonymous, 12 Apr 2020Let me take you to a trip down the memory lane.
Back in 20... moreDon't know my friend that should I be laughing at your poor joke or feel bad that you never watched TV or read Newspaper. Seriously how could you have missed the advertisement of OnePlus One. Wow, seriously wow. Lets say you read a different paper than Hindustan Times which sadly was never booked by Oneplus to advertise their phone, but I really cant believe that you have never seen a single ad of OnePlus One on TV in 2014 Let it be Hindi English or Regional let it be Entertainment, News or Sports OnePlus One ad was shown in almost every channel at some point of time. Comparatively Mi did less advertising at that point of time.
Even now watch TV or read newspaper you will regularly come across advertisement of SAMSUNG, OnePlus, Xiaomi, OPPO, NOKIA, ASUS and Apple all these brands do good marketing. Even while traveling outside you can see their hoardings. Don't know what world or parallel universe you live in. HTC stopped long ago and even LG and Motorola stopped, Lenovo stopped as well. See what happened to their sales.
