Dante101, 11 Jun 2020Sharp Aquos Zero 2 is allready doing 240hz in 2020.I'm talking about premium flagship smartphones like iPhone, Xperia, Galaxy S, Note etc.. No body considers "Sharp Aqous Zero 2" as premium smartphone (It is actually 120Hz with black frames). I do know there are already gaming smartphones with native 144Hz like Nubia in 2020.

In that regard, no thank you, watching a movie on a phone .... 10 centimeters slaped on my mug? ... I am not that desperate, I am using a 4K display for 6 years and I will up it to 4K@144@1000+HDR this year. I would have it already, but you know Covid stuff and the deal expired by then. Watching a movie on a phone in general ... with speakers? With headphones on that dac? ufff that's rough dude.

Probably a best solution is implementation of sync that iPad, Razer ... probably Asus (not sure there) are using - aka dynamic refresh rate that adapts to what you do on your device.

Fearghast, 08 Jun 2020You clearly have no experience with 60+Hz on a display. + ... moreIMO the HRR (120hz or 144hz or above) on a smartphone display you won't see much difference than 60hz, when the user watch their small display on a smartphone about 10inch distance. Someone saying HRR has better for UI transition because of high refresh rate is 120 Hz(example), it means that the image is refreshed 120 TIMES PER SECOND, do you need the UI transition do so much work and become battery hog? Other person saying HRR better for gaming smoother frame rate, but actually when user gaming on smartphone the characters in the game are very tiny their weapon are even more tiny, with the 10inch distance watching to the display you can't see anything different even it is HRR, because the motion object is very tiny on moves and display is very tiny so it is very hard to attentively see the difference. So 90hz refresh rate consume more battery than 60hz, 120hz consume more battery than 90hz and even more than 60hz, the 144hz HRR is the king of battery consumption periodly and it doesn't improve the image quality either, but maybe improve the smoothness very minor, but people hardly see the difference on a small screen.

4K display is better because people watching 55inch size 4K TV distance about 10 feet, it is much same as people watching a 4K display on a smartphone with 10inch distance. The Sony xperia 1ii has the most huge range of color gamut and high resolution pixels to produce even more details/magnificent/high quality/true to real life images on the 4K HDR displays and you can attentively watching the still-image or video or YouTube or movies...anything with exceptional experience.
The Xperia 1 ii has Motion blur reduction technology.

Smithravi, 10 Jun 2020I highly doubt any flagship will go over 120Hz (Next are 14... moreLet me elaborate, because I feel there is an issue of not understanding each other.
I don't do brands, world for me is more complicated than fans and haters, IMHO there is a room for objectivity.

60+Hz on a mobile display is seriously questionable of usefulness - other than feeling more fluid - it's not useful for content - video, audio, pictures, most of the games - best benefit is with motion, scrolling etc. I personaly don't care for it on a mobile phone, I care on tablet when I draw and on my PC when I do anything - even browsing, work everything is much more comfortable.
          -
4K is useless on a 6,5" screen - being amoled with pentile does not change a thing - it's useless, you can't see it, it's battery hog, most of the content and apps don't even use 4K on Xperia, there is no resolution options app by app basis etc.
          -
Black frame insertion is nice, I used it myself on my old gaming panel. But it's not as good as a propper 90Hz or higher.
You are right, it's at least something, something better than usual 60Hz.
          -
360 it's nice feature I used it myself. It's not anything new and pure binaural recording is much better, beucase you do not simulate, you are in the room with the music.
IMHO it's nice, it will die soon or will stay irelevant.
          -
Speakers are better. They sure are, but they lack the base, they lack the balance, nuance and are left behind by a competetion that does not even use proper front facing stereo (Xiaomi for instance).
So I have to agee - better, good, 7/10.
          -
          Wind fiter
It's software limiter that trades one disaster for another one.
There is no harsh peaking with wind filter, but you get under water audio as a trade off.
Not good at all a mount for a deadcat - let's say on a case, that would be awesome!
          -
          4K@60 recording
You are on a phone, you have to accept the fact, that even 700€ Sony ZV-1 has more than quadruple image quality when it comes to video quality.
If you are a profesional, you are not using a phone to create the content.
          -
High res audio is a priority for me - at least when I am at home.

So it's not black and white I guess. Sony is making a lot of mistakes and a lot of things right. Being a fanboy is a sad sad fate mate. I hope you get well soon.

Siki84, 09 Jun 2020I read somewhere, that EU version will only have single SIM... moreIts tricky here. E.g. in sony site of Sweden for xperia 1ii it says single sim. However, when i checked with one of service providers (Telia Sweden) they confirmed (twice!) Its dual sim. I even have print screen from my chat with customer support. I have preordered xperia 1 ii, so looking forward to check this out.

or youtube in 30fps, even 60fps, what's the point of 120, 144hz if most of the content is still 30 and 60fps?

or watching photos. They are stills! You don't need more than 1fps at all, but hey you got 144 times of 1 when you're watching a photo on a 144hz screen! Wow! So amazing!

                                Sharp markets 240hz phone? It's a 120hz+BSI.

4k oled screen only has 2k IPS equivalent amount of dots? Then it's 2k.
No need to bother about marketing of 4k screen, guys it's a 2k screen.

4k60 video recording with dropped frames and low bitrate? Gimmick for noobs.
No video editor in their sane mind would ever use 4k even in 24fps with a bitrate lower than 100mbps, hence 60fps in 60mbps is completely useless for anyone more-or-less professionally engaged in videomaking.

Phone speakers? Don't have to be louder than a boombox, they just have to be loud enough to hear a call.

Hi-Res audio? Who cares, when one is on the subway they won't hear the difference between 128kbps MP3 and 1411kbps CD quality.

4000 mah mattery is just enough to get through a day

                                and so on.

Then tear down all other flagships too, be consecutive, don't just shove one Sony flagship. Come on go ahead.

Engadget Japan’s interview is quite insightful and there are a number of other things to note. We typically don’t get this much transparency when companies talk about their phones.

                                  Display

                                  1. The Sony Xperia 1 II has a 4K resolution OLED panel that runs at 60Hz refresh rate but has a “Motion Blur Reduction” feature that produces a “90Hz equivalent” refresh rate experience. What this feature does is “increase the voltage in time with the activation of the OLED pixels when displaying an image.” Sony says this has the advantage of avoiding the “pixel looking gray” which can happen when “[sending] the instruction to activate a pixel” as “it takes some time to switch from black to white.” XDA’s Dylan Raga posits that this might help reduce black smearing and motion blur when scrolling with black text on white backgrounds showing, which is a common problem on high refresh rate OLED panels. Motion Blur Reduction is active at all times when the feature is enabled, even when watching a movie.
                                  2. 70-80% of users who purchased the Xperia 1 were satisfied with the display performance, which is what Sony used to justify keeping the 21:9 aspect ratio (a “CinemaWide display”). Sony says that over 50% of Netflix movie content is optimized for 21:9 and a few games like Call of Duty Mobile are also optimized.
                                  3. The Xperia 1 II can be set to a white point of D55 or D65 so colors of a photo can be faithfully reproduced before printing them out. This is aimed at pro photographers.

                                  Cameras

                                  1. The T* after the “ZEISS” logo on the camera bump is “related to the special coating applied to the lenses.” This coating “minimizes flare and ghosting.”
                                  2. The 16mm and 24mm sensors on the Xperia 1 II use a Dual Photo Diode (Dual PD) sensor which allows 100% of the pixels on the sensor to be used for phase-detect autofocus. This results in faster and more accurate autofocus, and is how the Xperia 1 II achieves its “world-first 20fps burst shooting with AF and AE.” Sony decided to keep the sensors at 12MP because choosing a higher resolution would affect the sensor’s readout speed, reducing the high-speed shooting and autofocus performance, and also “prevents the issue of the resolution changing when changing the magnification.”
                                  3. Photography Pro is a separate camera app that is coming in a future software update. It will have more settings like manual shutter speed exposure settings, more white balance presets, and the aforementioned 20fps burst shooting mode.

                                  Audio

                                  1. Sony’s 360 Reality Audio feature was developed for surround-sound systems with 13+ channels but Sony created a virtual surround sound system using only 2 channels on the Xperia 1 II. Amazon Music HD, Tidal, and Deezer have 1000+ titles that are compatible with 360 Reality Audio.
                                  2. The speakers have been improved from the Xperia 1 –> 1 II. The speakers are now on front, improving the L/R channel balance. Sony also increased the cabinet size, added more powerful amps, and collaborated with Sony Pictures and Sony Music to tune the audio.
                                  3. Sony added a wind noise reduction feature when recording video.

Fearghast, 10 Jun 2020Mark my words ... no one cares and no one will care. You ar... moreEverything is "useless" yeah. The minute it comes in Huawei or Xiaomi it becomes the "what innovative feature, look the other losers, nobody else has that". blaaah blaaah :D

Fearghast, 10 Jun 2020No it is not, it's black frame insertion it's 60Hz of pictu... morePoint of motion "BLUR" reduction is to reduce the blurriness while scrolling. This gives you end effect that scrolling seems smooth (similar to 90Hz end effect). Here (while scrolling) one should not focus on how fast a thing refreshes. 90Hz allows user to see things (more clear??) while scrolling unlike 60Hz. MBR aims at reducing this bluriness effect at 60Hz while scrolling "SIMILAR" to 90Hz. Point here is, this is still better than typical 60Hz experience one experiences.

Frame rates is where actually 120Hz/144HZ/240Hz is useful (and makes sense) while gaming. I can't play (don't like to) on 60Hz monitor or TV obviously. But yeah I play rather on console and PC than smartphone and yeah Xperia 1 II is not a gaming smartphone (If I'm interested in HRR I would buy gaming phone with cooling systems). So.. There you go.. My opinion.

Fearghast, 10 Jun 2020Mark my words ... no one cares and no one will care. You ar... moreI highly doubt any flagship will go over 120Hz (Next are 144Hz or 240Hz) at least until 2035/2040. Given that no improvements in battery management. But I can see 4K is the next step Samsung will be taking in coming 2-3 years. Then all Chinese manufacturers will follow and so do people like you. What's unnecessary today will be necessary tomorrow. 4K on smartphone makes more sense than 16GB RAMs and 108MP. I'm just saying for rational persepctive.

We will meet and talk once again in 2025 about audio and display in flagship smartphones.
