What's so different than getting a new Chinese phone every year? What is this need to upgrade phones every year to follow the "trend" out of fear being left out if you don't change flagship phones every year?

If you have a great quality phone that lasts years like most Sony Xperia phones, you don't need to upgrade phones that often. Battery still good, software and security patches are ongoing, no problems. I don't see a reason why you need a new phone. Yes it's expensive, but it's also last longer. In the end, everyone still get what they pay for.

                    [deleted post]I find it very impressive that Sony added 3.5mm, 20% larger battery, wireless charging (1*), better speakers (2*), larger main camera sensor + TOF, and 5G (3*) all in a package that is 0.3mm slimmer than its predecessor, Xperia 1.

                    1*) I'm not a fan of wireless charging, but it's nice to have.
                    2*) I assume the speakers are bigger because it uses a much powerful amp. (Dual CS35L41)
                    3*) 5G modem not integrated on 865 SOC, so it takes up space.

When... moreI think the pattern is that Sony always have availability of their new phones during summer months in Japan. In that case, they need to know why they're focusing on Summer Release. It could be accounting purpose that impacts their "financial year" periods. So there's only two options they can take:

                      1. Announce the phone late to make it as close to the availability date as possible. There's a risk involved here, if competitors announce ahead of time, they could lose the hype and lose market shares as customers got their hands on other competitor's phones early. It doesn't matter if Sony made a superior phone, customers won't spend money for another phone 3 months after getting another flagship.
                      2. Move the availability date earlier to MWC or even January. There's also a risk here, logistics need to be taken care of well ahead. Especially if they're aiming for a global availability. Manufacturing needs to be at full capacity well ahead, but because there's no announcement, they can't analyse the market on the demand for the phone. Overproduction would drive Sony to even bigger losses. They need to know how much their phone is in demand, and how to create new demand for their phones and manufacture them in the right balance to ensure cost-revenue is reached and start making profits.

                        You can at least fight for privacy with non-Chinese companies/devices. Look what happened when American companies had back doors exposed, they were embarrassed and fixed them. China will just host the data or even the encryption keys and freely give that data to their government without warrant or even justification!

                                What China does to electronics is pariable does not matter on what machines. Nobody can match them. Also they do make innovation themselves. I do believe companies like Huawei did not steal tech. Why 5G tech of Huawei is 3 years ahead of US tech since it's done on same machines for making codes and stuff ? Not all is hardware and that's main problem for US

                                  But it also supports PD since it has a Qualcomm chipset.
                                  So in absence of the VOOC charger, you can still charge with standard Qualcomm 4.0 charger albeit at lower 18W speeds.

                                  Besides, the good things is that the 65W charger is bundled with the phone(they better do if they charging 1200 Euros) unlike Samsung where you have to buy 45W charger seperately with only 25W bundled in the box.

                                    Another thing to note. The VOOC is a proprietary technology. Which means you will need to have a VOOC compatible charger with a supporting cable. For convenience, it would be better to have a standard charging system (such as PD). The thing i don't like about proprietary tech is that the company who patented the tech makes money off of it when smaller companies use it in their products. An example of this is Apples lightning connector. I have seen iPhone cables selling at a higher price than USB (micro and type c) from the same cable manufacturer.

                                        Since fast charging in early days was with increasing voltage which increased heat which in turn plays the most significant role in battery degradation.

                                        If you read the article carefully, when they say, traditional, it means without increasing voltage (the thing that used to exist on non fast charging phones).
                                        But there is nothing traditional about the method as current is increased here which obviously wasn't the case with non fast charging phones.
