From what I can gather, Sony is typically in the top 5, neck and neck with Samsung. Some of the Chinese manufacturers lately seem to have been pretty timely as well, sometimes besting Sony and Samsung.

And i havey doubts they will be changing anytime soon. Mainly because their mobile division has been suffering losses since 2017 (not sure on the exact year) and has started making profits again last year. The profits mainly down to reducing internal costs and increased prices.
They most likely will continue on reduced costs for some time, that means they will have to use their budget sensibly. So, a radical new design is less likely to happen.
I might be completely off the mark though😅

After all that was said about the Xperia 1 III, I hope Sony sticks to their guns and doesn't cave to tech YouTubers and haters on forums. The only thing they need to do is advance the features they already have (battery, screen brightness, etc.). They don't need to make the design & camera software more like Samsung or Apple. Their sales are already increasing.

Too many idiots won't know what IV stands for and will be reading out letters. Or calling it the Sony 1 intravenous or something. I mean some of these reviewers have a hard enough time counting the I's to get to 3.

Anonymous, 12 Jul 2021It's probably not due to cost but space constraints. S... moreWhat i mentioned was just a possibility. You might be right as well. And the selfie cam has never been a priority for Sony. And its usage depends on the end user as well. I rarely use the front cam for selfies, i mainly use it for video calls, so a better selfie cam is wasted on me. That might not be the case for others. Sony in this case prioritized the main arrays instead of selfie. But from the trend, selfie cam should improve next year.
The xperia 1 had 1 Sony sensor and 3 Samsung ones, the Xperia 1 ii had two Sony sensors and 2 Samsung ones and xperia 1 iii only uses a Samsung designed sensor in the front facing camera. From the looks of things, they will be using all in-house sensors starting next year.
That shouldn't result in a segment leading cam as Google has shown that hardware alone isn't enough, but should be better than what we have now.
So, maybe people who want a better Selfie cam should wait for the mark 4

Sony had to fit a camera in the tiniest bezel where others have gone punch through or a notch. They had a (much) better selfie camera on their older phones like the XZs - XZ3

AlexP, 11 Jul 2021I'm getting tired reading about this selfie camera. So... moreYou know, as someone who works with manufacturing people, i now understand these things a lot better than before. A lot is to be considered when designing something. The cost and availability of components being one of them. Wven in house productions arent free as they can profit from selling these and get a 3rd party component at a cheaper rate. The RnD takes a bunch of money as well. The variable telephoto lens might look easy to implement, but when you have to do it at that size with space constraints, it is a difficult job. Then there is the whole manufacturing process which requires labour and other resources. Then they have to factor in the cost of everything, the expected sales number and price the product accordingly. I don't know all the governmental policies in place in different countries, but there is always a chance that the Chinese brands might get some benefits, hence they can sell theirs at a much lower cost than others. Or maybe their sales figures are high enough that they can justify a lower cost by moving more numbers.
And these companies require to make money else they would have to close shop.
I am pretty sure that even if Sony lowered costs, they would not be competing with Samsung or Apple or OnePlus or Oppo or Xiaomi in terms of sales. So to profit, they priced it as such. Even though that price is still the same as Samsung and Apple's. They most probably have much lower profit margins than either of those companies
