Ah yes, to make phones more premium, distinguish them as flagships, and to raise the price point for them, despite those screens wasting more battery than already sufficient 1080p sweetspot resolution on smallscreens.
1644p or 1440p, whatever...

So it's on the US site for the 1 Mark iii in terms of price. $1,299.
The Xperia 1 Mark ii was brutally expensive in the US for being just a 4G phone but only a $100 increase for 888, dual periscope cams, 4 more gigs of RAM, and added X1 chip for 4K@120Hz is not too bad surprisingly. I'm still getting it due to Best Buy's credit card program. Will look good with my TicWatch 3 Pro that I just ordered.

Phone Reviewer, 23 Jun 2021There's a reason 4k screens on phones never took off w... moreLets be honest here, the main reason 1440p took off in mobiles has more to do with the marketing Samsung put behind their flagships than anything else. The other manufacturers, except Apple and Sony, mainly followed in Samsung's footsteps.
By providing a 4k display, Sony is distinguishing itself and also providing something that no other manufacturer does. There are people who would like to have a 4k display,Sony is for those.
Anyway, Sony isnt as popular among people as it used to be, so most people who get one, i am pretty sure they know what they are getting into and what they are paying for.
As for 4k being a gimmick or not, i would just say that the general populace wont notice a difference between a 1080p display and a 1440p diplay either (on mobiles).

I know many people who operate 1440p display at 1080p to conserve battery.

JustMy2cents, 21 Jun 2021I can't speak for everyone else but I actually want 4K... moreVR is one of the uses for 4k smartphone screen, however I still feel it's too niche to justify the battery tradeoff for most people. Interesting perspective though.

Xperia have sth called Game enhancer.
The good thing about that one is, its not only allocated to games as the name suggests, but you can assign any app to it, including web browsers, or whatever, and assign to every app that you want solely the 120 hz option. Rest of apps and UI will be running at 60hz, but those apps you want at 120hz will use it.
Options dont stop there, but any other option in Enhancer, including HS power control, etc,...are available for any app you allocate to it.
