The specs are amazing, camera is amazing and the size is perfect. The only thing that stops me buying all new Sony phone's is the silly aspect ratio and the design. The XZ1 was the absolute perfect design. Please go back to the traditional design.

Probably on XDA on a thread somewhere (https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/enable-jio-volte-and-vowifi-on-xperia-5-iii.4467977/). Many of us are trying hard to get this working but haven't been able to find a way to do on Xperia 5 III and your knowledge would be of great help to folks like us. Currently my phone is like a paperweight as I am unable to place any calls without VoLTE and Jio is a 4G ONLY SIM.

after rooting the phone with magisk and then using adb+super SU and QPST
i ended up modifying the carrier policies,
i got 5g working without VOLTE
but now the phone just overheats like a hot desert day
i guess the 888 chip is to blame,
back to my temporary Moto G 5g plus until i can figure this out.
or just save up for a lousy iphone mini

you have to know, 12 Apr 2022could be taxes in us?Thats because Sony dont really partner with Network Provider in US but sells their phones as unlocked/openline so slightly expensive than with Locked Dealers.

Have a Xperis 5 ll as main daily phone & happy with it.

EVERY phone should heat up, not even to the moderate level you are mentioning, but very hot, if you use it while charging. Also, the apps closing may not be a problem in the OS, it might just be ram management issues. If the apps are closing when you are using your phone while charging, then that's your answer. You can't expect a phone to charge and not use memory internally.
Also, if Android 12 is the problem for ruining your battery (which is also occuring with me Pixel 3a), then what's the point of upgrading to another phone? that also has Android 12, unless you get an iPhone. P.S YOU CAN reverse a software update, search it up.
