Could have been a good phone but ruined by the fact that it only has 2 years software updates. That's not enough considering it is a flagship phone.

I love when Sony adding SD card door it's makes her snapdragon mobile's like the Best but the price is iphone prices

I don't game, and I'm not likely to ever shoot video higher than 1080p60, so I imagine I wouldn't run into any throttling issues on this device... Headphone jack, micro SD slot, flagship specs all around, great cameras, (relatively) compact size...

I suppose the only big question I have is, what's Sony's reputation when it comes to Android updates? Specifically in comparison to Samsung's robust update promises for their devices.

Anonymous, 13 Sep 2022But cooling sucks so much it throttles hard. This "hard" throttling nagging is getting somewhat stupd and unsubstantiated..
It throttles to 58% while remainig at 59c temp.

No, it does not throttle any more than any other android alternative, including Gen+ Soc phones....

              Which alternative is any better?
S22 that throttles even more to 47%?
Or Xiaomi 12 one that goes down to 57%?
Zenphone 9 that throttles the same yet burns your hands at 64 c while at it?
Maybe Gaming phones like RedMagic or Black Shark that dont throttle so much, but end up heating so much to burn you hands at over 60c while at it?
Or the famous Rog Phone 6 with Gen+, that throttles almost the same to 60% while remaining at 50 c temp, despite bigger size, newer SoC, and "so called" better heat managment?

You have revs of alternatives and all the gaming phones with throttle temperatures and percentages...
And none do any much better, but some even worse, no matter the SoC...

Japanese companies like Sony rarely reinvent the wheel, most of the times each generation is a little increment over the last one, ant it's the case here : slightly better cpu, bigger battery, added wireless charging, slightly better photos at night

Honestly, a brand new 5ii is a much better buy, much cheaper but same camera and almost same performance and decent battery life.

I feel that this phone is going to be very capable, and Sony seems to be one of the few companies today that actually "cares" about the consumer. It has expandable storage and a headphone jack, removing the need to buy a subscription storage service or replacing wireless headphones every few years. It sounds like it has overheating problems, but it could be better than having visual artifacts (lag, frame skipping) when when recording video or playing games. It has a very respectable battery life, and a tall display that will be great for watching movies (as it is in the native aspect ratio) and reading text, as it will fit more on the screen. This definitely seems like the play if you care about having a purpose-built smartphone, as it could fit any tech enthusiast's dreams. I just wish it was a little cheaper, so Sony could go mainstream and not go out of business. Great phone, great design, meh price, enthusiast focused.

This phone may be expensive, but it is one of the last relatively compact phone (around 6" or 6,2" screen by today's standards) with wide angle, normal and telephoto cameras. The only remaining competitors are the iPhones and the standard S22, and they don't include a charger neither (btw the charging cable is useless without the charger). If we add the expandable storage or the headphone jack this xperia 5 is alone.
The suspected overheating is only an issue for those who like to play big 3D games on a very small screen, which is probably not what sony is aiming for. And yes the price is high, but it was just released and it's a niche product (otherwise more manufacturers would also sell compact flagships). It will probably be more reasonably priced by the end of the year

Almost about to get this phone; but decided not to as still using SD 8Gen1; which made by Samsung' fab; which known to be power hungry and run hot; this has been like this since apple A9 chip; history just repeat itself.

Hi guys, I'm thinking of buying this to replace my Asus ZenFone 8, since Asus lost my $1000 phone in the fucking RMA centre(!!!). I'm not buying another Asus product, and this phone seems to check all the boxes (3.5mm port, compact size, good cameras). Does anyone have an idea of the price when it comes out in Singapore?

Imo this one's a great upgrade from the 5 III, the larger battery is definitely a game changer for some people.
Really sad they got rid of the optically-adjustable telephoto system though.
