why do you guys even bother to give opinions? no one buy, no one care. lol ... let's it die peacefully 🤣

PhoneFreak45, 08 Sep 2023There are many factors contributing to the Xperia 5V costin... morethe integrated DAC (and the headphone jack) does not contribute to additional cost in any tangible way, unless we are talking about the TOTL ones, such as AK4499, ES9068 and such, ordinary high end DAC such as a Wolfson WM8740 cost like USD1 (for order of 1K or more), or even less, the same apply for SD card slot, those cost like USD1 or less in term of production cost per unit, it is the additional bulk that companies want to cut to have a smaller phone (appeal to customers) and/or force customers to pay for extra storage / online storage service (such as iCloud)...

As for the production cost issues due to quantity, it is what it is, you sell less quantity, the cost of materials would go up, but customers won't pay for your inefficiency, it is your problem, not theirs, if you present value to customers, they will buy from others, that is how market economy works. $ony has more overheads in their mobile department, spending more on wages than its competitors, and result in more expensive phones (without value added to customers), and the sales and market shares will fall, pushing cost of production further (smaller order of materials cost more, less phones to share the R&D cost), that is the uphill battle $ony facing ATM, if they can't find a way out, they will be the next LG, HTC or Nokia, which are no longer relevant to the mobile market as they once were.

ingramli, 08 Sep 2023Just want to point out 5V is equipped with SD 8 Gen 2 (Gen ... moreThere are many factors contributing to the Xperia 5V costing more than that phone:
-Lower number of units sold means more expensive parts (no bulk deals)
-Further increase in expense over Chinese companies, since they have to buy many components from outside where they're being made, while poco is doing 100% of their operations in China, cutting costs significantly
-Better pay for employees, resulting in a higher necessary profit margin
-More money saved to invest in the development of new technologies such as Exmor-T and OLED display development, neither of which poco does.
-Cutting edge image sensor technology driving camera system cost up considerably
      -Headphone jack with DAC
      -Expandable storage

All of these things easily result in a 4-500$ premium over the poco device. It takes more than just specs to make a flagship phone, it takes more than just any net profit to pay employees well, and it takes more than just net profit to invest in developing new technologies for mobile.

IQ200, 08 Sep 2023Because we have POCO's coming with almost flagship spe... moreI agree with most of it, though I would add that even when comparing Sony with western companies, we should take into account the quality of certain components. For example the Xperia 5V's main camera is a lot more expensive than the S23's, and especially the Zenfone 10's. It's genuinely cutting edge technology, first of its kind, of course it's gonna be more expensive. Also, I'm just gonna say, I despise MKBHD. His reviews are filled with bias, he'll nitpick which direction you have to swipe notifications as a reason not to buy the OnePlus 11, than completely ignore a very badly communicated macro mode which doesn't work very well on the S23 Ultra, which impacts the usability of the phone far more. He's not an objective reviewer by any metric. He goes over specs like it's the only thing that counts, yet I don't think he's ever given Sony a positive review in the same way he gives Samsung and Apple phones which are all but at a standstill good reviews. It's why people think Sony phones aren't usable for the average user, because he'll say outlandish things like the auto mode on Xperia phones is just unusable. Maybe was the case at one point, but not now, not for the past few years. You can say all you want about a lack of unicorn puke HDR, Xperia's can take good photos in auto mode. Everything else about the phones, resoundingly usable for someone who's not a photographer. The idea that Xperia's are not usable for somebody who's not that demographic is a myth.

IQ200, 08 Sep 2023Because we have POCO's coming with almost flagship spe... moreNot totally agree with your view, but I guess for the most part you have the point. Many who praise the value of Chinese branded phones present on the table failed to acknowledge the shortcomings they have got under the table. Corners cut in where less noticeable (for example, many compliant about the speaker quality in phone conservation, for Xiaomi' near flagship model, the Xiaomi 13), many of them also have crippled software (One Plus have specific models locked their phones usage in overseas countries if the user took them aboard China for more than 14 days, the phone will be restricted to make phone calls in some countries), the built-in advertisement, bloatware, so far and so forth....

Having said that, just as you said, $ony is putting themselves into a very niche position in the market, there are simple not enough photographers/cameraman out there to feed the idea of "best camera you can get in the form factor of a phone", period.

How is Qualcomm not really mainstream? I mean first of all, they don't even make phones, it is a completely different company than the rest you mentioned.

PhoneFreak45, 08 Sep 2023Why do so many people assume this phone is cheap to make? H... moreBecause we have POCO's coming with almost flagship spec for 500€ so people think these are regular prices for a flagship phone. People also think chipset is the most important thing on a phone so if phone has a Snapdragon 8 then they must be flagships, which again is not the truth. There is no 500$ flagship phone. Except in China.

In my opinion it's not fair to directly compare chinese brands with non-chinese when we talking about prices as chinese brands will always have a better value. But what if someone want something specific which these chinese brands don't have? You can't say they both have all covered because that's not true.

Price wise Xperia should be compared with Samsung, Asus, HMD-G Nokia and Google Pixel as they are the only mainstream non-chinese brands. I probably forget to mention a few brands like Cat, Vertu, Qualcomm, HTC, Fairphone and some others but they are not really mainstream.

There is a valid reasons why chinese brands can offer such a value and non-cinese brands just can't. It's just impossible to do what chinese brands can because they do everything in their own homeland. Everything!

Xperia line of phones was never affordable. Even when they had solid market share. So what is the real problem for xperia? I would agree with what MKBHD has suggested in his last video about Xperia 1 mark V.
Xperia needs a mainstream phone like Pixel 6a so people can buy those and with that profit Sony could easily fuel the niche premium offerings. Until then, it's a stricly niche product for camera focused enthusiasts who don't use auto-mode too much and those kind of buyers will often have a couple of lenses and a mirrorless camera which only means they won't have too much problem with paying the higher price.

For those who want to say, but why would a photographer buy him self a phone to shoot when he already have better device for shooting pics or videos? Yeah, but phone is always with us and the camera is not. Phone is more practical. It's not better, just more practical in most cases.

On this site there is many tech entusiasts, but most of them are focused just on benchmark scores. Not many people have a passion for photography in here. I get that. We all have different interests and hobbies. This phone is hard to reccomend to regular buyers. Price is not the main problem. Practicality is. This phone is not practical for average user.

Also.. they are producing a very small amount of phones each year so that means they can't get price discounts on each component like their more mainstream counterparts can.

Their midrange offerings has to be a lot better then it is. You all think 1 mark V and 5 mark V are expensive? Hell no!

Take a look at the Xperia 10 V for 500€... now that's way more expensive then it should be. They should focus more on 10 series.

                Just my 2 cents

Also, two years of Android updates is a dealbreaker. I understand if it's some smaller company with a limited budget. But this is Sony we're talking about.

PhoneFreak45, 08 Sep 2023Why do so many people assume this phone is cheap to make? H... moreJust want to point out 5V is equipped with SD 8 Gen 2 (Gen 3 isnt out until end of 2023), but to be fair, some chinese phones do offer a 120 Hz OLED screen AND a 8 Gen 2 SoC at around USD500 price point (such as the Nubia z50), of course some corners are cut (such as the OS software support and meh camera algorithm), on the other hand $ony does offer some of the best camera software in the industry, but whether that is worthwhile for the extra cost, is the question to be asked.

High refresh rate OLED display, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, 5000MaH battery, headphone jack + DAC, cutting edge main camera sensor, memory card slot, various custom software apps for taking full advantage of the phones cameras, and you want this for 500? Are you kidding me? Sony would be taking a serious loss if they sold it for that price, even if they moved a huge quantity of units. As it is, there's a limited number of people who will buy this phone. Whether you think the hardware should be different or not, that doesn't reduce the price of the phone. Disagreeing with the hardware decisions made, does not mean you magically get to pay less for the same hardware. There is no argument that mitigates this. Sony may be able to sell this phone for 900$, but they certainly couldn't sell it for 5-600$ and still make a profit.

This phone should be like $500-600. Over a grand is kind of absurd. You can get older but similar devices with the jack and SD slot for less than a third of the cost.

Anonymous, 07 Sep 2023Lost interest when they removed Notification LED & Tele... moreNotification Led results in little to no cost reduction. We're talking cents of components here. Telephoto lens, would normally have a cost reduction, except the main sensor on this phone is far more high end than the previous model, so that easily eats the cost of the previous mediocre telephoto. I encourage you to learn a bit more about what it actually takes to bring a product to market, because your price expectations are rather unrealistic for a small phone company launching an enthusiast phone with cutting edge technology.

potentially my next phone, depending on how much Pixel 8 jacks up the price.

A compact phone with top-tier camera is hard to come by these days. And the Pixel 8 is losing a lot compared to the Xperia - chipset performance, battery life, storage space (i can add 1TB for less than $100 to the Xperia), heaphone jack, speaker quality...

It's a lot of compromises but if the Pixel 8 is priced low enough, I'll live with the compromises. And vice versa... if the Pixel 8 is priced close enough to the Xperia 5V, I'm willing to pay a bit extra to get all of the above.
