ingramli, 12 Sep 2023"Normal humans" do not care about the SoC, but th... morelol. a clash of opinions. how bizarre.
nobody is talking about 10V. the question was about 1IV and 5V. Also, if you think that ambient temperature is not part of the equation, then there is really no point in trying to convince you otherwise. you are also making it sound like the phone overheats just idling and the battery goes to 20% in 6 hours. be realistic - please.
now. about 'normal humans' - I don't game on a phone or take pictures with a phone that often. I use viber, calling ppl, listen to mp3 and watch youtube. this is not a gaming phone although you can game on it very well according to reviews. if you want a point and click camera, you can consider more than just this one and in the rare occasions I do take out the phone for a snap, I would like the pictures that I take to not look completely s**t. if anyone is like me, then 5v would be more than adequate. if you are a hxc gamer, you are probably looking at the ROG phones. if you want ease of use/no hassle camera, you are looking at apple. if you don't mind the looks and slightly (juuuuuuust a smudge) less premium camera, you might consider samsung. if you are looking for longevity, you are going for pixel or oppo and all other brands that have 5 year support. I go for 5v for all the 'normal humans' things I already mentioned and it looks good, also seems comfortable for youtube viewing. also, no need for a protector. if this 5v survives me, I would be perfectly fine with it.

Therefore it is objectively easy to recommend Xperia 5V to average users (not gamers) as it seems a very nice package overall. mind, again, the price is inflated A LOT. it you fit in the category 'normal humans' described above or your life does not revolve around your phone and you have some money to burn, get the 5v.

ingramli, 12 Sep 2023"Normal humans" do not care about the SoC, but th... more"Therefore it is objectively hard to recommend Xperia series to average users because $ony' phones' SoC are inferior to its competitors in their price range."

Are yes the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is a massive pile of s**t. Clearly inferior to the Snapdrongon 8 Gen 69

N1GH7, 11 Sep 2023I understand what you are trying to say but normal humans d... more"Normal humans" do not care about the SoC, but they care if the phone lags. The weak/old SoC such as the SD695 on 10V lags badly, even on daily operation (such as web browsing).

The same goes for thermal, the SoC gets hot easily means it is inefficient on performing its job. Even you live in a cold place, temperature is not an issue the phone will still eat battery like crazy, and your phone' charge wont hold long, unless, you constantly plug your phone to the charger....but then, I don't think that is "normal user" ' usage you try to define..... all in all SoC do matters...... although some users (such as those who gaming on it) cares about it more than others.

Therefore it is objectively hard to recommend Xperia series to average users because $ony' phones' SoC are inferior to its competitors in their price range. I am not saying $ony is bad, but the feature sets it offers (micro SD expansion slot, earphone jack, no punch hole screen, top of the notch camera, etc.) are not the features average users care about most.

IQ200, 08 Sep 2023Instead of talking sht why don't you type in your favo... moreI see, from what I read, its basically a better 12mp sensor with better low light quality.

But it still doesn't change the fact that it will always gets compressed when posted in social media. 12mp telephoto, wide and ultra wide camera for the xperia 5 series is a good middle ground since it looks like sony wants to make a very clear difference between each series (removal of telephoto, though you could argue the 48mp digital zoom compensate for it, questionable use of what looks like a lower grade screen on the 5V).

As I said, the xperia 5 IV is an almost perfect phone, solid hardware and almost perfect software. Replace the chips with a more efficient one, remove bloat apps (facebook, linkedin, etc)(sony own apps are not bloat,eg photo pro) and a few bug fix in the software.

It just needs a few tweaks here and there and its the most complete phone you can get.

        Also, this:
Xperia 1 series for the bleeding edge
Xperia 5 series for all round usage "complete" package
Xperia 10 series for the midrange/budget? Idk

ingramli, 11 Sep 2023For me, the biggest drawback for 1 IV is not about shorter ... moreI understand what you are trying to say but normal humans do not care about the SoC. sony has been thermal throttling since the beginning of time but it all depends on the climate in your location. if you are living in Iceland, you would not care about thermals :D. also, some ppl wait for the next generation of phones so that the older could get a little cheap - 5V and 1IV should be the same price (more or less). I chose the 5v because it is new, small, camera is fine, display is fine and is the polar opposite of what I have now - g9 plus. really having a small phone is better for carrying around, texting and general usability. 5v is far from perfect, even far from great but if you have 1000$ lying around and you need a phone which has fragship cameras, this is it. maybe the pixel 8 will beat it when in comes out in a couple of months, but it will not be by much and the design of the pixel is not to my liking and . sony looks better and it will probably be fine for the next 3 years. I dont like samsung and apple for personal reasons, i've had 3 motorolas and I can use a change, nokia is kinda mid, huawei phones are not very small, asus has brick phones and Zenfone but the camera is not the best and the back is not glass and currently on the market sony is the only brand that stands out. no punch hole, front facing speakers and etc.

if the features of the phone work for you, buy it. we all have been using phones for decades now and we all have our preferences. mine is sony and motorola.

N1GH7, 11 Sep 2023generally, sony has never been a good value for money. even... moreFor me, the biggest drawback for 1 IV is not about shorter (remaining) lifespan in term of update support, but the SoC (Snapdragon 8 Gen 1), that Samsung node based SoC is literally hot garbage, producing too much heat on load, and draining battery like no tomorrow, definitely something to be avoided (like plague), if 1 IV or 5 V is all one could afford, avoiding $ony on a whole is a no-brainer IMHO, unless knowing what he/she is going after....

Ron Hk, 11 Sep 2023One honest question here. Will buying this phone be a good... moregenerally, sony has never been a good value for money. even will all the photo applications, you should ask yourself, how many times during the life of the phone are you gonna use those. 3.5 - can the earpiece you have be type-c? most buds come with such an option. (salnotes zero ex.). microsd - sure. comes in handy if space is an issue but not really necessary nowadays. 5v a good choice - it is. but for the price you have so many other options. iphone 14, samsung s23+ etc. I would not recommend 1iv unless you want less security updates. and those 12mp cameras - sony did change the cameras in 1v and 5v for a reason. (wink). basically it is your choice. I would buy the 5v as I have some money to burn and I would like to know how sony are doing nowadays as the last sony phone I had was p990 - Sony Ericsson. get the 5v if money is not an issue and you need the sd and 3.5. 1v is pretty much the same but with a telephoto and better screen ... more space too. but always be aware - you are paying sony premium only for the brand. weigh your options and just go for it. don't think too much about it. buying a phone should be ez - "hmm I like how it looks, has some nice features. I'm buying it" that's it. overthinking is for the chat trolls :D

Ron Hk, 11 Sep 2023One honest question here. Will buying this phone be a good... moreMy suggestion is same as DarlingYext, for the price it is asking for, 5 V present a bad value for money, unless you need micro SD slot and earphone jack on a smaller (but not exactly light) package, you should either go for Samsung S23 for a cheaper and more comprehensive camera package, or pay extra for the 1 V for pretty much all you can hope for from a smartphone (except what offer from a folding phone perhaps) today.

I have to say, the decision to remove the telephoto lens was a bad move because camera is pretty much the biggest reason for folks to choose a $ony' phone so far (except the $ony fanboys), that will only push folks to go for 1 V or switch to other brands all together...

Ron Hk, 11 Sep 2023One honest question here. Will buying this phone be a good... moreI'd say just go with the 1 IV, if you don't mind the size difference.

                    One honest question here.
Will buying this phone be a good choice?? And also can someone suggest me which will be better between experia 1 iv and this one (5 v)???

Sony's screen ratio is a bit strange . Having recently come from a 20.9 screen to a 19.5.9 aspect ratio I appreciate the extra space . I'm sure many like the Sony form factor but IMHO it puts more people off than encourages them to go Sony.

PhoneFreak45, 08 Sep 2023There are many factors contributing to the Xperia 5V costin... morethe integrated DAC (and the headphone jack) does not contribute to additional cost in any tangible way, unless we are talking about the TOTL ones, such as AK4499, ES9068 and such, ordinary high end DAC such as a Wolfson WM8740 cost like USD1 (for order of 1K or more), or even less, the same apply for SD card slot, those cost like USD1 or less in term of production cost per unit, it is the additional bulk that companies want to cut to have a smaller phone (appeal to customers) and/or force customers to pay for extra storage / online storage service (such as iCloud)...

As for the production cost issues due to quantity, it is what it is, you sell less quantity, the cost of materials would go up, but customers won't pay for your inefficiency, it is your problem, not theirs, if you present value to customers, they will buy from others, that is how market economy works. $ony has more overheads in their mobile department, spending more on wages than its competitors, and result in more expensive phones (without value added to customers), and the sales and market shares will fall, pushing cost of production further (smaller order of materials cost more, less phones to share the R&D cost), that is the uphill battle $ony facing ATM, if they can't find a way out, they will be the next LG, HTC or Nokia, which are no longer relevant to the mobile market as they once were.

ingramli, 08 Sep 2023Just want to point out 5V is equipped with SD 8 Gen 2 (Gen ... moreThere are many factors contributing to the Xperia 5V costing more than that phone:
-Lower number of units sold means more expensive parts (no bulk deals)
-Further increase in expense over Chinese companies, since they have to buy many components from outside where they're being made, while poco is doing 100% of their operations in China, cutting costs significantly
-Better pay for employees, resulting in a higher necessary profit margin
-More money saved to invest in the development of new technologies such as Exmor-T and OLED display development, neither of which poco does.
-Cutting edge image sensor technology driving camera system cost up considerably
                                  -Headphone jack with DAC
                                  -Expandable storage

All of these things easily result in a 4-500$ premium over the poco device. It takes more than just specs to make a flagship phone, it takes more than just any net profit to pay employees well, and it takes more than just net profit to invest in developing new technologies for mobile.

IQ200, 08 Sep 2023Because we have POCO's coming with almost flagship spe... moreI agree with most of it, though I would add that even when comparing Sony with western companies, we should take into account the quality of certain components. For example the Xperia 5V's main camera is a lot more expensive than the S23's, and especially the Zenfone 10's. It's genuinely cutting edge technology, first of its kind, of course it's gonna be more expensive. Also, I'm just gonna say, I despise MKBHD. His reviews are filled with bias, he'll nitpick which direction you have to swipe notifications as a reason not to buy the OnePlus 11, than completely ignore a very badly communicated macro mode which doesn't work very well on the S23 Ultra, which impacts the usability of the phone far more. He's not an objective reviewer by any metric. He goes over specs like it's the only thing that counts, yet I don't think he's ever given Sony a positive review in the same way he gives Samsung and Apple phones which are all but at a standstill good reviews. It's why people think Sony phones aren't usable for the average user, because he'll say outlandish things like the auto mode on Xperia phones is just unusable. Maybe was the case at one point, but not now, not for the past few years. You can say all you want about a lack of unicorn puke HDR, Xperia's can take good photos in auto mode. Everything else about the phones, resoundingly usable for someone who's not a photographer. The idea that Xperia's are not usable for somebody who's not that demographic is a myth.

Many who praise the value of Chinese branded phones present on the table failed to acknowledge the shortcomings they have got under the table. Corners cut in where less noticeable (for example, many compliant about the speaker quality in phone conservation, for Xiaomi' near flagship model, the Xiaomi 13), many of them also have crippled software (One Plus have specific models locked their phones usage in overseas countries if the user took them aboard China for more than 14 days, the phone will be restricted to make phone calls in some countries), the built-in advertisement, bloatware, so far and so forth....

Having said that, just as you said, $ony is putting themselves into a very niche position in the market, there are simple not enough photographers/cameraman out there to feed the idea of "best camera you can get in the form factor of a phone", period.
