Hey! Sony! Look at the Xiaomi! They always make powerful FLASHLIGHTS! Everyone in the film industry uses a smartphone flashlight every day. Because we often work in the dark. I love smartphones from Sony.. but flashlights are terrible.

If it's just some AI upscaling 12MP images I'd be damned because if you look at Gsmarena's sample photos, there are some iffy areas but overall it's way more detailed than the Xperia Pro-I's shots.

joe nodden, 11 Dec 2021Except they can all be used? Nope, the fixed colour filter right in front of those 108 million image receptors is configured to output 12MP images. If you compare it to a regular bayer filter on a 12MP camera, it'll look exactly the same. There's no way it can capture 108MP due to that.

I received mine yesterday, I love everything about this phone. My Note20U was good, I miss the S-Pen but overall I love this phone, over the Note!

joe nodden, 07 Dec 2021You seriously don't even know the definition of hypocr... moreWell the S21 Ultra exists, and the "108MP" camera isn't even 108 Megapixels. It's 12MP to be exact. Why can they call it a 108MP when it is only 12MP? Same reason. Technically it has 108 million image receptors, but not all of it can be used for the final image.

I do know the definition of hypocrisy, and you're clearly a hypocrite sorry but it is what it is.

" I've never praised a manufacturer I had known to be lying."

They aren't lying though, which is what you don't seem to comprehend, they are technically correct in using the term. Maybe go read about it.

"If other manufacturers have lied over their sensor sizes and I had known, I would have called them out for it. "

and yet you only seem to find out about the ones from Sony. Interesting.

"I do not favor or have bias against companies."

Yet you're the first to comment about resolution despite it not actually being a problem in the review article, you on the comment section of a Japan-exclusive Sony phone. Sure buddy, I'll take your word for it.

"I've praised Sony in the past for their good decisions in almost every area but their cameras."

I don't really believe you since I remember you complaining about benchmark scores as well, but sure whatever you want.

"Unfortunately their flawed cameras have not been greatly improved despite their marketing being all over their cameras instead of the areas of their phones that were done properly. "

Their cameras aren't bad, you are making them seem they are complete crap when it's not the case at all. They don't use as much processing and try to keep the scene as natural as possible, it operates as a camera would. Just because you can't take a picture in manual mode doesn't mean it's bad.

"Quit using the "every other company does it so it's ok for Sony to do it" mentality. It's objectively wrong."

I'm pointing out your hypocrisy and your lack of understanding of how sensor size works and the marketing.

"The 1 inch sensor is, for all purposes, not there. "

Yes, it is, I explained it to you, go read again.

"You don't see car manufacturers selling "cars with V12 engines" with 4 of the cylinders permanently disabled. That would be a v8 not a v12."

Because cameras and cars work differently, this comparison is completely bs. Even if the phone isn't using the full sensor, you have the massive pixel size there and other useful benefits such as superior EIS for videos, which is why it's marketed more as a vlogging device.

"Unfortunately, despite this, Sony mentions their (for all purposes) non-1-inch sensor 18 different times on their product page."

Because the sensor is still there, they aren't lying, but they aren't telling the full truth either which is also disappointing. You can't call it a lie because they aren't lying, but they are misleading. I do hope you are capable of understanding the difference between the two.

"And once again you ignore the "What you can say objectively is that if any one of those areas is too poor the shot will come out poorly.""

If you're referring to the areas in a photo when taking a shot, then that's supposed to happen. If something is dark in real life, it should be dark in the camera. Nights should not look as bright as day, but you have the option of editing RAWs if you want to.

"Even with massive pixels, the shot will be terrible with a terrible resolution. Even with a massive resolution, the shot will be terrible with a terrible sensor size. There is no hierarchy of importance you halfwit."

Here's the thing you don't seem to understand, 12MP is not terrible resolution, it's still enough for 4K. 12MP is still enough for almost everything you need unless you are printing big boards which would require more resolution, even then you would use an actual camera for that. You keep complaining about "measly" 12MP when other manufacturers are also using 12MP. I understand that you struggle to comprehend with the two cells in your brain, but it's not hard to understand.

When other manufacturers are advertising 48, 64,108 MP on the cameras, they bin them together to make a 12MP image. The resolution ends up being the same as Sony, and yet you still complain about Sony having a "low" resolution. This shows your hypocrisy again and your lack of understanding when it comes to photography.

When it comes to high resolution and small pixel size, you have more problems here because the pixels end up so small that light might not be able to hit it properly, the risk of crosstalk is higher than with bigger pixels, and like Samsung's new 200MP sensor with 0.65um pixels, they are smaller than the red wavelength. Higher resolution and smaller pixels also have more noise than lower resolution and bigger pixels.

You clearly show your lack of understanding and comprehension when it comes to photography. There is a hierarchy if you even want to put it. Sensor size being the most important, then pixel size, then resolution.

Sensor size is the most important and I shouldn't have to explain why.

Pixel size is the 2nd most important because you can capture more light with each pixel, have less noise, and overall have better low light performance.

Resolution is the 3rd most important because it is dependent on what you need. Most people only need 12MP since in most cases such as IG, Twitter, FB, etc you don't need that much. If you are doing a lot of cropping for certain situations such as bird photography or printing for big prints, then the resolution is needed. Because this is the most situational, it is the least important.

It's a shame that they don't sell in as many regions as they used to. If they adjust their prices and expanded upon the market, they might sell more of their devices.

Suddenly when Sony puts it on a smartphone it's "lying". The sensor is there, they had reasons for not using the full thing which are actually fair reasons.

I wouldn't expect you to actually understand how marketing works since you seem to fall for everything including "1-inch" sensors and the MP hype. You were the first person to comment on the hands-on review and complain about MP count, but then don't take into account that other manufacturers using QB also have an emulated 12MP count which makes your point irrelevant.

If you go back in the comment section you can see what is the most important when it comes to camera hardware, which is: 1. Sensor size, 2. Pixel Size, 3. MP count.

Of course, they do, but that's part of marketing.

I can see that you don't understand how marketing works. They advertised it as a "1-inch type" to make a sort of distinction for marketing. Almost all, if not all 1-inch cameras aren't actually 1 inch. It uses terminology from back when they used Vacuum tubes, and still use that to market it.
