Gino76ph, 08 Aug 2024Xiaomi's update policy is not so crystal clear. "... moreBrands don't usually mention how often they do software updates. It can be random depending on the device, where you live, and depending on the brands themselves. From my experience as a Xiaomi user for 10 years, it's usually every 2-3 months.

I've also used a Samsung before. For the first 2 years, it would receive software updates monthly, then for the third and last year of its lifespan, those updates slowed down to quarterly (every 3-4 months) as they focused on updating more recent devices.

No comment about Honor, they haven't been available in my country since 2019.

You want a jack-of-all-trades without having to worry about virtually anything, including software support and camera quality, go for Samsung. This will be my last buying advice for you, good luck with making your next purchase.

"Four years of Android OS updates" but for how long would someone wait until it's updated? Nothing in the small print. "Five years of security update" but will the updates be pushed monthly, quarterly, 6-monthly, yearly? Again, show me something that specifically say that and i'll eat my hat.
And what are your thoughts on Honor? (The 200 & 200 Pro seems to have compelling specs and features. And it's currently on discount).

Williamzzz, 08 Aug 2024The ads themselves on Xiaomi phones aren't as botherso... moreHere are several ways you can do to turn off ads on Xiaomi devices using HyperOS:

        1. Settings -> Fingerprints, face data, and screen lock -> Authorization & revocation -> Disable the "msa" app. This app is responsible for showing ads on first-party apps from Xiaomi.

        2. Settings -> Fingerprints, face data, and screen lock -> Privacy -> Ad services -> Disable "Personalized ads"

        3. On the "Security" app, tap the settings icon (nut icon) on the top-right corner, scroll down, then disable "Receive recommendations"

        4. On the "Themes" app, go to the "My account" tab, then go to settings (nut icon) on the top right corner, then disable "Show ads" and "Personalized recommendations"

        5. On the "Music" app, tap the icon on the top left, go to Settings -> Advanced settings -> Scroll down, then disable "Show ads" and "Show online recommendations on startup". I also recommend disabling " Allow permanent notifications".

        6. As for the apps "GetApps" and "Mi Video", I simply went to their App info and disabled notifications since I don't use them.

That's all the ways I've discovered so far. Have a nice day.

hei, 07 Aug 2024Help ne choose, Honor x8b or this phone? I need camera and ... moreThe Redmi of course, no comparison. Honor X8b uses a low-end, outdated, and 4G-only Snapdragon 680. Demanding games like Genshin Impact are nearly unplayable on even the lowest graphics settings.

Honor X8b also doesn't come with OIS on its main camera, and can't record 4K videos.

Their update policy isn't as ambiguous either, they post roadmaps you can often see on their social media accounts, and on their websites. No need to rush about not getting the latest quality-of-life updates too, because other companies, including Samsung don't do them often either.

If you still want an S23 just for the better software and selfies, then you can go ahead, it's your money at the end of the day.

I'm still choosing between the 13T and the vanilla or "Plus" Galaxy S23. Sifting through eBay i can get a 13T for much cheaper (probably almost £100 cheaper) for a mint/pristine device.
Yes i'll be sacrificing a slower battery charging speeds + bigger battery capacity, low PWM dimming but gaining a compact size, better selfies and faster updates on the Galaxy.
With 13T i get all the niceties and specs better than the S23 but i'm loosing on ambiguous update policy + ads + bloatware which ironically Samsung also has.
It's so hard to choose. Please help.

I can't recommend the S23 FE at all because the battery life and thermals are atrocious, even more so on the Exynos version. You can barely get a screen-on-time of 5 hours even if you don't use it for intensive tasks.

The vanilla S23 is a much better option... if you have the money for it. It's super lightweight and compact, is equipped with a faster and more efficient Snapdragon processor, comes with better cameras, and despite the miniscule 3900mAh battery, it can still manage a screen-on-time of 6 hours at best.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend getting a renewed S23 because their conditions can be uncertain, but the choice is yours whether or not you want to take that risk. Otherwise, go with the 13T, which you can still pick up brand new.

They invested too much on chipset, cameras and performance but i think they forgot to protect the front screen with any Gorilla Glass protection. I don't think they mentioned the front screen type in the website. And it's curved albeit slightly. So, as it stands it is still a Xiaomi 13T and a vanilla S23 or S23+.
I wanted an S23 FE but with a small 4500mAh capacity and Exynos Samsung just went mental on that and forgot something in the drawing board.
                    What do you think?

                      - Cameras: the Honor 200 uses the same cameras as its Pro variant, which retails for £685. Looking at GSMArena's review of the Honor 200 Pro, all of the cameras perform really good across the board, including selfie, ultrawide, and telephoto. Even better than the 13T, I must say.

                      - Update policy: Honor stated that they promised 4 OS updates and 5 years of security patches. They don't mention anything about how often they do system updates or quality-of-life updates though.

                      - Performance: It comes equipped with a Snapdragon 7 Gen 3. It's slightly less powerful than the Dimensity 8200, but has better battery life and thermals in comparison.

                      - Battery life: At best, you should be able to get a screen-on-time of 7-8 hours, which is enough to last you throughout the whole day.

If they made a compact version of the Note 13 Pro with a 6.36 inch display, I'd buy it. But it's a sad reality that compact budget phones practically don't exist anymore.

Gino76ph, 04 Aug 2024Of all my choices of my next phone (Galaxy A54, Redmi Note ... moreThe Xiaomi 14 has a pretty fatal design flaw that causes the main lens to become foggy on the inside if you're in a cold environment or in an air-conditioned room while the phone is running hot. Don't know if they fixed that with the newer batch of units now.

As for a used S23+, well I don't personally like buying used phones myself because it's risky. There's always a chance of getting a faulty unit, a badly damaged one, or even a counterfeit. If you do get one that's genuine and still in good condition, their warranty is usually expired, so if they break, you're out of luck with getting free repairs or a new replacement.

Personally, I'd still go with the 13T. It's hard to find a better option elsewhere that isn't second-hand.

Albeit Xiaomi's ambiguous or bogus update policy it's perhaps better than a Motorola or Sony Xperia's.
Alternatively, I could go the other way and go for a much expensive Xiaomi 14 or an older but still a bit pricey Galaxy S23+. I could be paying £200 more with a Xiaomi 14 or under £100 for a used S23+ compared to a 13T pricing now.
Thoughts please? before I have a migraine. Haha.

                                  - It's only certified for IP54 splash proof. While the 13T is IP68 certified, meaning the 13T should withstand being submerged in water.

                                  - It doesn't come with eSIM, as far I can remember.

                                  - It doesn't have a telephoto camera.

                                  - It only has EIS for video recording on 1080p and under, while the 13T supports EIS for up to 4K.

                                  - It doesn't come with a protective case inside the box. Not a big deal really, since there are some pretty good, inexpensive cases you can buy just about anywhere.

On top of those, the Nord 3 also has an inferior main camera compared to the 13T. There's always a slight yellow tint during low-light conditions, considerably less detail, and more sharpening.

Williamzzz, 03 Aug 2024For me, it's the Xiaomi 13T. It's just a no-brain... moreI've got a fourth choice: OnePlus Nord 3. But being an older device, having inferior Dragontrail glass does the Xiaomi 13T still gets your vote after all we have discussed?

Gino76ph, 02 Aug 2024I'm still torn. I need to decide which one to get. G... moreFor me, it's the Xiaomi 13T. It's just a no-brainer especially when you can get it for the same price as the A54.

The screen is better, the processor is much faster, you get more storage and RAM for the same price as the base A54, there's an infrared blaster, it charges a lot faster, and you get all the accessories you need in the box including a wall adapter and case. Samsung won't give you anything besides a USB cable and a SIM ejector in the box, so you'll end up having to spend more.

The A54 might take better selfies, but I don't personally take selfies often. Even if I do, I still wouldn't pick the A54 because it's an inferior phone in just about every other aspect, and this is coming from both a Samsung and Xiaomi user.

I'd rather take 10 strengths and 1 weakness, over 1 strength and 10 weaknesses if you know what I mean. That's why I can't recommend the A54 over the 13T unless you're a die-hard Samsung user.
